Johnson Leads Huskies Past Bridgewater State 2-0

GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore midfielder Samantha Johnson (Mexico, Maine/Mt.
Valley) knocked in her third goal of the season to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 Little East Conference win over the visiting
Bridgewater State College Bears Saturday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field in
Gorham.
The win snaps a two-game slide for the Huskies and improves their overall
record to 7-12 on the season, while inching them above .500 in conference action
at 6-5. The loss drops the Bears to 5-12 and 3-8 in the LEC.
After battling through a scoreless first half in which neither team could
generate much offense, as both teams combined for just five shots, the Huskies
opened the second half on a mission. Johnson put her team up quickly in the
second half notching the game-winner just 1:40 into the period. Johnson drove
in the goal after receiving a perfectly placed pass from freshman midfielder
Megan Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle).
Despite increased offensive pressure by the Huskies, who out-shot Bears
13-4 in the second period, USM would maintain just a one-goal advantage as
Bridgewater State sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Downs (Hanover, Mass./Hanover)
made spectacular saves in the half keeping her team in the game. Downs, who
ended the game with eight saves, also benefited by the stellar play of sophomore
defender Laura Chiuppi (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet), who made three defensive
saves.
The Huskies added an insurance goal late in the game when freshman forward
Erica Brown (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook) finished off an assist from freshman
forward Alyssa Kraus (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) in the 61st minute for the
2-0 final.
Southern Maine junior goalkeeper Sadie Garnache-Poirier (Biddeford,
Maine/Biddeford) was steady in goal for the Huskies turning back five shots,
including a diving effort on the Bears' sophomore midfielder Ashley Panzini's
(Saugus, Mass./Saugus) nearly game-tying shot seconds after Johnson's goal in
the second half.
Southern Maine returns to action in the first round of the Little East
Conference playoffs, Tuesday (November 1). Game time and opponent are yet to be
announced. Today's game concluded Bridgewater State 2005 schedule.

Framingham State Downs Southern Maine in Double Overtime, 3-2

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. - Sophomore midfielder Meghan Staffiere (Norwood, Mass./
Norwood) knocked in the game-winning goal 33 seconds into the second sudden
death overtime period to lift the Framingham State College Rams to a 3-2 double
overtime win against the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East
Conference game Wednesday afternoon in Framingham, Mass.
The win is the second straight for the Rams who improve to 6-5 overall and
4-3 in the Little East. The Huskies, suffering their third consecutive loss,
drop to 5-9 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
After battling through the first overtime period scoreless, Staffiere
delivered the game winner off of a penalty corner, converting a pass from
sophomore midfielder Erin Johnson (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge). It was the second
time in the game that Staffiere and Johnson combined for a goal, as both players
connected for the Rams' first goal, also on a penalty corner, late in the first
half.
Despite being out-shot in the game, 27-12, the Huskies struck when senior
forward Kayla Vaughan (Monroe, Maine/Mt. View) notched her team-leading ninth
goal of the season in the 28th minute. Vaughan converted the first of two
assists in the game from junior defender Denise Minigell (Auburn, Maine/Edward
Little) to put the Huskies ahead 1-0.
However, the Rams' tandem of Staffiere and Johnson knotted the score
converting a penalty corner with 47 seconds to play in the half. The Rams took
a 2-1 lead three minutes into the second half as Johnson netted a goal of her
own on an assist from senior forward Jennifer Johnson (Uxbridge,
Mass./Uxbridge).
The Huskies battled back to tie the game at 2-2 when sophomore defender
Lauren Cash (Portland, Maine/Deering) netted her first goal of the season to

Huskies managed to knot the score at one goal a piece in the 29th minute when
senior forward Kayla Vaughan (Monroe, Maine/Mt. View) was in the right place at
the right time to knock in a deflection for her third goal of the season. The
score remained tied at 1-1 through the half.
In the second half, the pace of play had both teams going up and down the
field before the Beavers tallied two goals in short succession to take a
commanding 3-1 lead. Veazie notched her second goal of the game on an
unassisted strike in the 42nd minute before senior defender Mary Berry
(Norridgewock, Maine) was awarded a penalty stroke and converted at the 47:13
mark.
The Huskies trimmed the Beavers margin to one goal less than a minute later
when Vaughan notched her fourth goal of the season, and second of the game, at
48:06, but it was as close as the Huskies would get the rest of the way.
UMF put the game out of reach in the 52nd minute as senior midfielder
Kristen Allen (Mexico, Maine) converted a centering pass from Veazie to put the
Beavers ahead 4-2.
Southern Maine junior goalkeeper Sadie Garnache-Poirier (Biddeford,
Maine/Biddeford) played well in net for the Huskies turning back 10 shots as
Beavers out-shot USM 18-5 in the game. UMF freshman goalkeeper Lorena Borjas
(Boothbay, Maine) made just one save in the win.
The Huskies return to action Saturday, September 24, on the road at Little
East Conference rival Plymouth State University. Game time is slated for 12:30
p.m. The Huskies are currently 2-0 in the LEC while Plymouth State is 1-1 in

Vaughan Notches Game-Winner, Give USM 2-1 Win Over Westfield State

GORHAM, Maine - Senior forward Kayla Vaughan (Monroe, Maine/Mt. View)
drilled in the game-winning goal with just over two minutes remaining in
regulation to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-1 Little East
Conference field hockey win over the visiting Westfield State College Owls
Saturday at Hodgdon Field on the USM Gorham campus.

Vaughan hammered in the game-winner off of a perfectly placed centering
pass from sophomore forward Lisa Henley (Bristol, Vt./Middlebury Union).
Henley, who carried the ball down the left side of the field, found a streaking
Vaughan for the helper with 67:50 gone in the game.

(Bryantville, Mass./Silver Lake Regional) tallied her first goal of the season,
no sooner than she had entered the game, 16 minutes into the first half.
However, the Owls came back to knot the game up at one goal a piece late in
the second on an unassisted strike from junior midfielder Kate Anderson
(Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown). Anderson notched the equalizer firing in a goal
at 62:51. But, the score remained 1-1 for just five minutes as Henley and
Vaughan connected to give the Huskies the win.

three saves in the Southern Maine goal. Senior Cat Hanks (Somers, Conn.) made

Conley Leads Babson Past Southern Maine, 3-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior tri-captain Elise Conley (Shrewsbury, Mass.)
scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Babson College field
hockey team to a 3-0 victory over the visiting University of Southern Maine
Huskies on Saturday afternoon.
The win was the first for Beavers' head coach Kully Hagerman, who recently
took over the program after four years as an assistant. Babson is now 1-1. The
game was the season-opener for the Huskies.
The nation's top returning scorer this year, Conley wasted little time in
giving her team a 1-0 lead as she scored off a rebound of first-year Annie
Pease's (Waterville, Maine) shot on Babson's second penalty corner just under
three minutes into the contest.
The Beavers (1-1) would remain on the offensive for the rest of the half,
but Southern Maine first-year goalkeeper Natalie Nimon (Augusta, Maine) kept her
team close with six saves in the period.
In a second half that was dominated by midfield play, Conley tallied her
second goal of the game and third of the season when she backhanded a shot just
inside the right post with 23:39 remaining. Senior Gina Giardina (St. Louis,
Mo.) then struck for her second of the year with 8:50 left, as she hit a shot
from the right side that caromed off Nimon's stick and over her left shoulder
for the Beavers' third goal.
That would be more than enough for first-year goalie Elissa Slovin
(Andover, Mass.), who made one save in earning her first career shutout. Nimon
finished with eight saves in goal for Southern Maine (0-1).
Babson will host Gordon College in its next game Tuesday afternoon.
Southern Maine will host Gordon on Thursday in its home opener starting at 4:00
p.m.
