USM Sinks Bridgewater State 3-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshmen Erika Kroon (Bryantville, Mass./Silver Lake
Regional HS) and Laura Pratt (Green, Maine/Leavitt Area HS) and junior Rachael
Nimon (Augusta, Maine/Cony HS) each scored to lead the University of Southern
Maine to a season-ending 3-2 win over Bridgewater State College in a Little East
Conference game Saturday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field.
The win gives Southern Maine a final record of 4-16 overall and 3-7 in the
LEC for the 2004 season. Bridgewater State concludes its season with its 11th
consecutive loss to stand at 1-15 overall and a 1-9 mark in conference play.
Pratt put the Huskies ahead 1-0 just 52 seconds into the game, corralling a
loose ball in the circle for the score. The Huskies looked to be on their way to a
1-0 shutout win as their defense, led by sophomore goalkeeper Sadie Garnache-
Poirier (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford), held Bridgewater State scoreless until
midway through the second half. Garnache-Poirier made six saves for the Huskies,
including a spectacular stop in the 14th minute on a point-blank shot from
Bridgewater State's Teresa Soderholm (Durham, N.H./Oyster River).
Bridgewater State finally broke through the Husky defense in the 49th minute
on the first of two goals from Chandra Wark (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott). Wark
redirected a centering pass from Courtney Carney (North Andover, Mass./North
Andover) to knot the game up at one goal apiece.
Southern Maine would answer quickly however to go ahead at 2-1 on Nimon's
goal in the 51st minute. Nimon put away a rebound off of junior Kayla Vaughan's
(Monroe, Maine/Mt. View) initial shot, following Vaughan's break-away run down the
left side of the field.
The Huskies would add a much-needed insurance goal seven minutes later when
Kroon rocketed in the eventual game-winning goal in the 59th minute following
another impressive carry down the field from Vaughan.
Bridgewater State's Wark tallied her second goal of the game just 19 seconds
later, but the Huskies held on for the win through the final minutes of the game.

Huskies Lose Heartbreaker to Keene State in Final Minute 1-0
KEENE, N.H. -- Senior forward Kaitlin Henley's (Somers, N.Y.) penalty stroke
goal with just 38 seconds to play in regulation lifted Keene State College to a
1-0 Little East Conference field hockey victory over the University of Southern
Maine at Owl Athletic Complex on Saturday.
The penalty stroke was called after a USM defender knocked down a shot by an
Owl player with her hand. Henley fired in the stroke past Huskies goalie Sadie
Garnache- Poirier (Biddeford, Me.) for her second goal of the season.
Despite controlling play throughout the game, KSC, which faltered on several
penalty corner opportunities, had a difficult time finding the back of the net.
The Huskies had the best scoring opportunity in the first half, but freshman
Alyson Lumino's (Hampden, Me.) bid was blocked by KSC sophomore goalie Sara Joyce
(Hampstead, N.H.) with a diving save. Joyce, who finished with three saves for
her first shutout of the season, later made consecutive saves on shots by junior
Sarah Metivier (Old Town, Me.) and Lumino early in the second half.
Henley had a shot bang off the post with just over 22 minutes to play before
connecting on the game-winner.
Garnache- Poirier finished with 13 saves for Southern Maine (1-12, 0-4 LEC),
