Heath, Superchi Named to NFHCA All-Region First Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine) and junior
goalie Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
field hockey team have been named to the 16-member STX/NFHCA Division III New
England West All-Region first team. The six all-regional teams were announced
Monday afternoon by Jennifer Goodrich, Executive Director of the NFHCA (National
Field Hockey Coaches Association).
This is the second straight year that the duo have been honored by the NFHCA
with a spot on the New England West All-Region team. Both were named to the
STX/NFHCA New England West second team in 2001.
Heath, also an All-Little East Conference second team pick, shared the team
scoring lead with Sarah Dolley with 20 points apiece. Heath had eight goals,
including four game winners, and six assists in 22 games this past season. For
her three-year career at USM, she has 24 goals and 15 assists for 63 points. She
ranks 11th all-time in goals scored, second in assists and seventh in total
points.
Superchi had another brilliant season, compiling a 1.08 goals against average
in 23 games. She stopped 164 shots while allowing just 24 goals (.872 save
percentage), and posted seven shutouts. Her career goals against average of 1.13
ranks her fifth all-time among goalies with a minimum of 30 games played. She is
third in saves (355) and fourth in shutouts (14).
"I'm very happy for the both of them," said Bonny Brown-Denico, USM field
hockey head coach and a two-time regional All-American during her playing career
at USM. "These are tremendous awards and they are well deserved. Our team enjoyed
a very successful season, and two of the reasons for our success was the play of
Renee and Jessie."
The two helped lead the Huskies to a 15-8 overall record (7-3 in Little East
Conference play) that tied the school mark for most wins in a season, a spot in
the Little East Conference tournament championship game for the first time, and a
semifinal berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New
England tournament.

Mount Holyoke Eliminates Southern Maine, 2-1
Top-Seeded Clark Blanks Keene State, 2-0
GORHAM, Maine - Junior back Lauren Weiner (Kensington, Md.) scored a goal and
added an assist to lift the third-seeded Mount Holyoke College Lyons to a 2-1
triumph over the second-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first
semifinal game of the ECAC Division III New England Field Hockey Championship
tournament Saturday afternoon at the Paula D. Hodgdon Field.
In the second semifinal game, sophomore Kristina Richio (Portland, Maine)
scored both goals to lead the top-seeded Clark University Cougars to a 2-0 win
over the fourth-seeded Keene State College Owl.
The championship game, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed due to
weather. A makeup date and site will be announced.
In the opening game, Weiner set up the game-winning goal in the 48th minute
of play, by collecting a loose ball in front of the Southern Maine goal and
feeding junior forward Krista Lindquist (Brunswick, Maine), who slammed the ball
past junior goalie Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.).
Southern Maine had tied the affair at 1-1 moments before on senior back Jodie
Eldridge's (Westbrook, Maine) first career goal. Junior back Amy Ouellette (Jay,
Maine) redirected a centering pass to Eldridge, who deflected the ball into the
net in the 45th minute.
The game remained scoreless until 45 seconds before the halftime break, when
Weiner slapped a loose rebound into the open net. Superchi made a kick save on the
initial shot, but as she turned to defend the goal, she lost her footing on the
snow-soaked field and Weiner's shot bounced into the empty net.
The Lyons held the overall edge in play, outshooting the Huskies by a 14-5
margin, and building a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. Superchi turned in a
stellar performance, and recorded 11 saves, while Mount Holyoke senior keeper
Elizabeth Wishart (Virginia Beach, Va.) stopped three of the four shots she faced.
With the win, Mount Holyoke improves to 18-4, and will advance to tomorrow's
championship game against top-seeded Clark University. Southern Maine concludes
the year with a final mark of 15-8.
In the second game, Richio gave the Cougars the only goal they would need
converting a pass from sophomore Ashley Perez (Worcester, Mass.) in the 15th
minute of play.
The score remained that way until the 57th minute when Richio found the back
of the cage again during a scramble in front of Keene State senior goalie Amy
Carroll (Brunswick, Maine).
Clark senior goalie Jesse Egan (Pepperell, Mass.) stopped three shots, all in
the first half, to post the shutout. Carroll turned aside four shots for the
Owls. The Cougars had an 8-3 advantage in shots and a 10-3 edge in penalty
corners.
Heading into the championship game with a shot at a 20-win season, Clark is
now 19-3 overall. Keene State concludes its season 15-9.

SOUTHERN MAINE ADVANCES TO ECAC SEMIFINALS WITH 2-0 WIN OVER WORCESTER STATE
Superchi Stops 13 Shots for Shutout
GORHAM, Maine - Junior goalie Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.) turned aside 13
shots, including a penalty stroke, while senior forward Renee Heath (Brunswick,
Maine) netted the game-winner midway through the first half to lead the University
of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 triumph over the visiting Worcester State
College Lancers in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Division III New England Field
Hockey Tournament Thursday afternoon at the Paula D. Hodgdon Field.
Southern Maine will now host the semifinals and championship rounds this
weekend, and will face Mt. Holyoke in Saturday's semifinal. The Huskies, who
avenged a 1-0 loss at Worcester State during the regular season, improved to 15-7.
The 15 wins equals the single-season school record initially set in 1986 and
equaled in 1990. Worcester State concludes the year at 13-9.
Heath gave the Huskies the lead for good in the 16th minute of play. Despite
fanning on her first shot, she made no mistake on her second attempt, and whistled
a shot just inside the near post.
The Lancers had several glittering opportunities to net the equalizer before the
break, but Superchi answered every challenge. She made a right kick-save off a
shot from junior forward Christen Watt (Hubbardston, Mass.) at 19:40, before
denying Watt a second time with a sprawling save at 25:28.
Senior forward Sarah Dolley (Oakland, Maine) gave the Huskies some breathing
room in the 51st minute of play, when she deflected a bouncing shot by junior
midfielder Deedra Beveridge (Camden, Maine) past the onrushing Worcester State
junior keeper Alisha Bates (Palmer, Mass.).
Superchi continued to shine in the Southern Maine net, and made a diving save
to stop Watt on a penalty stroke in the 51st minute of play. Superchi concluded
her work with a flashy stick save with 31 seconds remaining to preserve the
shutout.
Overall, Worcester State held a 15-8 advantage in shots, while the Huskies
held a slight edge in penalty corners at 5-4. Bates recorded a pair of saves for
the Lancers.

tournament and improved to 10-6 overall and 5-3 in the LEC, while Fitchburg State

1:06 late in the first half to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 advantage. Freshman
Rachael Nimon (Augusta, Maine) tied the game at 1-1 when she redirected a shot by

Southern Maine continued to attack, and took its first lead of the afternoon
at 28:05, when Dolley rifled a shot passed Fitchburg State junior goalie Angela
Buffington (Carver, Mass.). The play was initiated by junior Darci Holland
(Buckfield, Maine), who collected a loose ball just outside the circle and fed

Veronica Orozco (Nantucket, Mass.) at 12:22. Sophomore Julie Wessells (Shirley,
Mass.) carried the ball across the midfield stripe along the far sideline, before
launching a shot just wide of the near post. However, right before the ball
crossed the endline, Orozco raced in and deflected the ball around Southern Maine
junior goalie Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.), who was guarding the post.
Southern Maine held the overall edge in play, and outshot Fitchburg State by
a 15-4 margin, and built a 10-2 edge in corner keys. Buffington kept the Falcons

Trio Named USM Field Hockey Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward/midfielder Renee Heath (Brunswick,
Maine), along with junior midfielder/forward Deedra Beveridge (Camden, Maine)
and junior back Amy Ouellette (Jay, ME), have been named captains of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies field hockey team for the 2002 season.
Fifth-year head coach Bonny Brown-Denico made the announcement last weekend
prior to the team's season opener against Bentley College.
USM opened the season dropping a 3-0 decision to the defending NCAA
Division Two national champion Falcons. The Huskies were 13-9 overall last
year, including an 8-2 mark in Little East Conference play. USM returns to
action Wednesday afternoon (September 11) when it hosts St. Joseph's College at
Paula Hodgdon Field on the Gorham campus, starting at 3:30 p.m.
"All three came into training camp in great physical condition and really
stepped up into the role of captain. Renee and Deedra are the more vocal of the
three while Amy is the quiet leader on the field" said Brown-Denico.
Heath, a two-sport all-conference standout (field hockey and softball) for
the Huskies, was an All-Little East Conference pick the past two seasons. The
team's third leading scorer last season, Heath had five goals, including the
game winner against Keene State College, and a team-high four assists for 14
points. In her two seasons playing for the Huskies since transferring to USM
from the University of Maine, Heath has scored 16 goals, including four game
winners, and passed out nine assists for 41 points in 44 games.
"Renee is a leader on and off the field. She has great knowledge of the
game, and is willing to help the younger players understand what they need to
do. She is an impact player for us on the field," added Brown-Denico.
Beveridge, a two-year regular in the Huskies' lineup who also runs indoor
track in the winter and plays lacrosse in the spring, had one goal and one
assist for three points last season while splitting her playing time between
midfield and forward. Beveridge has four goals and an assist for nine points
during her first two seasons.
"Deedra is a motivator on the field who leads by example. She's really
stepped up this season with these added responsibilities," Brown-Denico said.
Ouellette, a first team All-Little East selection last year, is among the
conference's top defensive players. She had a team-leading six defensive saves
last season in 22 games, and has 10 defensive saves in her 44-game career.
"Amy is the quiet leader, but she's taking charge more this season in the
defensive half of the field," said Brown-Denico.
The remainder of the Huskies' 2002 schedule includes: Sept. 14, at Clark
(12:00); Sept. 17, New England College (4:00); Sept. 19, at Bates (4:00);
Sept. 21, Westfield State (1:00); Sept. 24, at Salem State (3:30); Sept. 26, at
UMaine Farmington (4:00); and Sept. 28, Eastern Connecticut (1:00).
Also Oct. 2, Plymouth State (3:30); Oct. 5, at Worcester State (2:00);
Oct. 8, Bowdoin (4:00); Oct. 12, at Keene State (1:30); Oct. 16, at Colby
(3:30); Oct. 19, at UMass Dartmouth (1:00); Oct. 23, at Framingham State
(4:00); and Oct. 26, Fitchburg State (1:00).
The regular season concludes Nov. 2 when the Huskies host Bridgewater
State (1:00). The Little East Conference tournament begins November 5 with
three first round games, followed by the semifinals and championship game
November 8-9 at the home of the regular season champion.
