Renee Heath, Jessie Superchi Selected to Second Team

GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior field hockey
standout Sasha Ilkovich (Wellfleet, Mass.) added another honor to an already
impressive list of postseason awards, earning First Team Regional All-American
honors in the New England West Region as selected by the National Field Hockey
Coaches Association.
Also receiving recognition are junior midfielder-forward Renee Heath
(Brunswick, Maine) and sophomore goalie Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.), who
were named to the second team.
"I'm very happy for the three of them," said an elated Bonny Brown-Denico,
USM head coach and a two-time regional All-American during her playing career at
USM. "These are tremendous awards and they are well deserved. Our team enjoyed a
successful season, and one of the reasons for our success was the play of these
three."
Ilkovich, who transferred to Southern Maine from Radford University
following her sophomore campaign, led the club in scoring with 12 goals,
including five game winners, and two assists for 26 points. During her two year
career with the Huskies, she registered 16 goals and 11 assists for 43 points.
Earlier this year, she received LEC Player of the Year and First Team All-LEC
honors.
Heath, who moved back to midfield from forward this year, finished third
on the team in scoring with five goals and four assists for 14 points. Superchi
started 18 of the 19 games in which she saw action, and turned aside 103 of the
121 shots she faced for a 0.94 goals against average. She shutout six opponents,
including four in a row during one mid-season stretch. Heath received first
team All-LEC recognition while Superchi was named to the All-LEC second team.
With the addition of Ilkovich, Heath and Superchi, 17 student-athletes
have earned Regional All-American honors on 22 occasions during the 35-year
history of varsity field hockey at USM.
Southern Maine concluded the year by advancing to the second round of the
ECAC Tournament and registering an overall mark of 13-9. In Little East
Conference play, the Huskies finished second in the regular season with an 8-2
record, and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament before suffering
a 1-0 loss to Worcester State. In the ensuing ECAC Tournament, Southern Maine
eliminated Babson College on penalty strokes, before suffering a 1-0 season-
ending loss to top-seeded, and eventual champion, Springfield College in the
