Renee Heath Named to NFHCA Regional All-American Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore forward Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine field hockey team has been named to the 2000
AstroTurf/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III
Regional All-America first team for the New England West region. Heath was
selected by members of the NFHCA.
The regional All-America first and second teams were announced Monday
(November 13) by NFHCA Executive Director Jennifer Goodrich. Players named to
the six Regional All-America first teams are eligible for national All-America
honors that will announced later this month.
Since 1986, fourteen different USM players have earned 19 regional All-
America citations. Heath is the only Husky player to earn a spot on the
regional All-America team this season.
A first-year forward, Heath led the Huskies in scoring with 11 goals,
including three game winners, and fives assists for 27 points. She previously
had been named to the All-Little East Conference second team. Two of her game
winning goals came in dramatic fashion against Worcester State College and
Framingham State College when she scored in the second sudden death overtime
period. She also had the game winner in a 1-0 win over Wheaton.
"Renee came into our program this year after transferring from UMaine and
had an instant impact on our team. She has great speed, skills and always plays
with intensity. What makes her such an outstanding player is she has that
unique ability to raise the team's level of play and make the other players
around her that much better," said head coach Bonny Brown-Denico.
Southern Maine finished the 2000 season 12-10 overall and 8-2 in the
Little East Conference. The third-seeded Huskies advanced to the LEC tournament
semifinals before being knocked out by Keene State College, 2-1, in overtime.

Little East Conference Semifinal
Smith Leads Nationally-Ranked Owls Past Huskies in OT, 2-1
PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Senior forward Kelly Smith (Lisbon, N.H.) scored 2:05
into sudden death overtime to lead the nationally-ranked Keene State College
Owls to a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first
semifinal game of the third annual Little East Conference Field Hockey
Tournament Friday afternoon at Panther Field on the campus of Plymouth State
College.
Smith, last season's LEC Player of the Year, drove to the right end line
on a breakaway and fired the ball from a near impossible angle low into the left
corner past the Huskies' junior goalie, Andrea Guerette (Fairfield, Maine), for
the game-winner.
Keene State, ranked 16th in the nation in the latest STX/NFHCA Division
III National Coaches Poll, is now 16-4 overall. The Owls will play the top-
seeded Plymouth State College Panthers at noon Saturday (October 28) for the LEC
championship. Plymouth State, unbeaten in Little East play this season, punched
its ticket into the final with a 2-0 triumph over fifth-seeded Worcester State
College, 2-0, in the other semifinal game.
The overtime loss, which snapped USM's four-game winning streak, dropped
the Huskies to 12-10 for the season. USM has played nine overtime games this
season, winning four. Seven of the Huskies' ten losses have been by one goal.
Southern Maine will await word on a possible ECAC tournament bid to be announced
sometime Monday (October 30).
Second-seeded Keene State struck first when senior Ally Huetz (South
Burlington, Vt.) deflected freshman Nichole Dallas' (Marlow, N.H.) shot from the
top of the circle high into the right side of the cage during a penalty corner
with 25:17 remaining in the first half.
Third-seeded Southern Maine tied the game early in second half when
sophomore Brittany McClure (Belfast, Maine) notched her first goal of the
season, beating Owls' sophomore goalie Lindsay Hamilton (Brattleboro, Vt.) low
to the left during a scramble in front of the net.
USM carried the play at times against the defending champion Owls, but was
unable to beat Hamilton again. The Owls out shot the Huskies 17-13 and held a
14-11 advantage in penalty corners.
Guerette stopped nine shots while Hamilton was credited with six saves.
The winner of the Little East Tournament will receive an automatic bid to
the NCAA Division III national tournament.

another tournament single-game record.

Hawks 20-11, with 13 of those coming in the frantic, scoreless second half.
Mendoza recorded seven saves, while senior FDU-Madison keeper Amy Banghart (Budd
Lake, N.J.) had nine.

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Cory Merrill (Naples, Maine) and junior
back Aimee Sharrow (Framingham, Mass.) have been named captains of the

The Huskies, who began preseason training camp on August 24, open the 2000
season this weekend (Saturday-Sunday, September 2-3) when they host the third
annual Paula Hodgdon Invitational Tournament on the Gorham campus. In
Saturday's first round games, the University of Massachusetts Lowell will play
Fairleigh Dickinson University-Madison at 1:00 p.m. followed by USM playing
Thomas College. The two losers will battle for third place honors at 11:00 a.m.

Merrill scored three goals and two assists for eight points in 19 games

"Aimee is a leader who gives confidence to her teammates with consistent
and constant encouragement," commented Brown-Denico who brings a 19-22 career
coaching record into her third season.
"Cory is a player who wants what's best for the team, and will do whatever
it takes to make the team better.
"Both are outstanding at pulling the team together, and that's something
we'll need this season with so many new players," added Brown-Denico. The
Huskies returned only six players from last season's 10-10 squad.

Allison Drury Named GTE Academic All-America
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior field hockey
standout Alison Drury (Canton, Maine) has been named to the 2000 GTE Academic
All-America College Division Women's Fall/Winter At-Large third team as selected
by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Steve Easton,
national coordinator for CoSIDA, made the announcement.
Drury is the first USM student-athlete to ever receive GTE Academic All-
America honors. The women's Fall/Winter At-Large team is comprised of student-
athletes from eight different fall and winter sports from the college division
(NCAA Divisions Two and Three and all NAIA schools).
A nursing major with a 3.92 cumulative grade point average, Alison led the
Huskies in scoring last fall with 14 goals and two assists for 30 points. She
was named to the All-Little East Conference team for the second straight year,
