D'Alfonso, Burleson Named to ABCA Division III All-America Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine baseball
team have been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)
Division III All-America team that was announced Thursday evening at the pre-
tournament banquet for NCAA Division III Championship Finals being played in
Grand Chute, Wisconsin.
Named to the ABCA All-America first team was junior outfielder Anthony
D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine), and selected to the third team was junior
shortstop Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering). The two are the first USM
players named to the ABCA All-America team since outfielder Ryan Bourque was
picked to the second team in 2006.
This is the first time since 2001 that two USM players have been named to
the All-America team in the same year. Outfielder Tyler Delorme (second team)
and shortstop Pat Toomey (third team) were the last Huskies duo to be named All-
Americans in the same year.
D'Alfonso, also named to the D3Baseball.com All-America third team earlier
in the week, previously was named to the All-Little East Conference and New
England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England first
teams. Burleson, who moved to shortstop this season after spending two years as
the Huskies’ center fielder, was also named to the All-LEC and All-New England
first teams, and was selected as the Player of the Year by both organizations.
D'Alfonso provided the Huskies a much-need power hitter in the middle of
their lineup. The 6-foot-5, left-handed hitter finished the season with a 21-
game hitting streak. For the season, he batted .393 (81 for 206) with 58 runs
scored, 13 doubles, three triples, 15 homers and a team-high 62 RBI. He led the
team with 145 total bases and a .704 slugging percentage.
The Huskies’ leadoff hitter, Burleson batted .383 (72 for 188) with 63 runs
scored, 10 doubles, five triples, nine home runs and 50 RBI. He walked 39 times
and had a .491 on-base percentage. He also led the team in stolen bases with
19.
According to the latest Little East Conference statistics, D'Alfonso was
ranked first in the conference in slugging percentage, hits, RBI, home runs, and
total bases, third in runs scored and fourth in batting average. Burleson led
the conference in runs scored and walks, was second in hits, triples, and stolen
bases, and fourth in on-base percentage and total bases (119).
Southern Maine, which loses only two players, finished the 2008 season with
a 36-14 overall record, and an 11-3 mark (tied for second) in LEC play. USM
reached the finals of the Little East Conference championship tournament and the

NCAA Regional Tournament - Game 14
Trinity Ends Southern Maine's Season 10-3
HARWICH, Mass. -- Junior pitcher Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, Texas)
scattered four hits in a complete-game effort to lead the undefeated and top-
seeded Trinity College Bantams to a 10-3 win over the fourth-seeded University
of Southern Maine Huskies Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the 2008
NCAA Division III Regional Tournament played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich,
Mass.
With the win, the undefeated Bantams earn their 41st consecutive win and
advance to the 2008 NCAA Division III Baseball World Series. The 41 consecutive
wins sets an NCAA Division III record for consecutive wins in a season, breaking
the previous mark of 40 set by Marietta College in 1999.
The loss snapped Southern Maine’s run of four straight wins in elimination
games, and ended the Huskies season at 36-14. The Huskies 36 wins equals the
fourth highest single-season total in the history of the program.
Barnard improved to 10-0 with the win, fanning seven batters and yielding
just one walk. Barnard also helped himself at the plate driving in three runs
on a perfect 3-for-3 day, including a two-run double that got the ball rolling
in a three-run second inning for Trinity.
Trinity added four more runs in the bottom of the third, ignited by a solo
home run to left field from junior Ryan Piacentini (Portland, Maine/Deering).
The Bantams would take advantage of three more hits and two hit batsmen to score
three additional runs and extend their lead to 7-0.
Southern Maine outscored Trinity 3-1 over the next three innings to pull to
within five, 8-3. Junior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) rocketed a solo
home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning to score the Huskies’
first run of the game. Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) blasted
a two-run homer in the sixth. Junior Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central
Catholic) connected two of Southern Maine’s four hits in the game, including a
double to left field in the fifth inning.
The Trinity hitters tagged five USM pitchers for 12 hits in the game, led
by Barnard with three and two each from Piacentini, sophomore Kent Graham
(Longmeadow, Mass./Choate) and senior Timothy Bourdon (Simsbury, Conn./Northwest
Catholic). Bourdon finished the game with three RBI.
USM starting pitcher, sophomore Andrew deBethune (St. Albans, Maine/Maine
Central Institute), was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four
hits and a walk in two innings.
Named to the all-tournament team from USM were D'Alfonso, senior Eddie
Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.).
Trinity will face SUNY Cortland (42-3), the winner of the New York
Regional, in the first round of the NCAA Division III World Series at Fox Cities

NCAA Regional Tournament – Game 13
Southern Maine Defeats Wheaton 9-3 to Advance to Championship Round
HARWICH, Mass. -- Sophomore southpaw Mark Schmidt (Gorham, Maine)
scattered 11 hits in a complete effort as the University of Southern Maine
defeated Wheaton College, 9-3, Saturday night in Game 13 of the eight-team,
double-elimination NCAA Division III Regional Tournament being played at
Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
The win moves the fourth-seeded Huskies into the championship round on
Sunday against top seeded and unbeaten Trinity College. The Huskies will need
to beat the Bantams twice Sunday to advance to the Division III World Series in
Grand Chute, Wisconsin, next weekend.
Southern Maine, 36-13 overall, had not beaten Wheaton in the previous nine
games played between the two teams prior to Saturday night. USM last beat
Wheaton on April 4, 2004. Wheaton finishes the season 34-10.
Schmidt, who pitched eight-plus innings in the opening game of the
tournament against Western New England College getting a no decision, allowed 11
hits and five walks while striking out eight to improve his record to 6-0 on the
season.
Wheaton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a leadoff double by sophomore
Paul Malaguti (Andover, Mass.) and a two-out single by freshman Sean Munley
(Trenton, N.J.).
The Lyons’ lead lasted until the third when the Huskies put two runs up on
the board. Three straight singles, the last by sophomore Ryan Jones (Bangor,
Maine), to open the USM third tied the game at 1-1. Sophomore Collin Henry
(Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) snapped the tie with a one-out single.
The Huskies sent ten men to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring six runs
on seven hits. Henry produced the first two runs with his third home run of the
season. Junior Anthony D’Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) followed with a triple and
came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy).
Four straight hits, the last a two-run double by sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers,
Mass.), pushed the lead to 8-1.
The Lyons got one back in the home half of the fifth on an infield error,
but Schmidt got out of a bases loaded jam with a fly ball to left.
Southern Maine added an insurance run in the seventh when Pike scored from
third as Mackey got caught in a rundown during a double steal attempt. Wheaton
added its final run in the ninth on a Munley single, a double by sophomore Jeff
Lieneck (Foxboro, Mass.) and an RBI ground out by junior Robert Foote (Walpole,
Mass.). Schmidt got the final out of the game on a strikeout.
Henry and Mackey led the Huskies 15-hit attack with three hits apiece.
Henry also had three RBI. Junior Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy)
and freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.) each had a pair of hits. Every
hitter in the USM lineup had at least one hit.
Malaguti, Munley and sophomore Sean Buckley (Webster, Mass.) had two hits
each for Wheaton. Junior Brian Hughes (Dudley, Mass.), the first of four
Wheaton pitchers used in the game, was tagged with the loss.

NCAA Regional Tournament – Game 12
Southern Maine Shuts Out WNEC 11-0 to Stay Alive
HARWICH, Mass. -- Senior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) hit a record
tying three home runs and drove in six runs to lead the University of Southern
Maine to an 11-0 victory over Western New England College in Game 12 of the 2008
NCAA Division III Regional Tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in
Harwich, Mass.
The win sends the Huskies into Game 13 against Wheaton College at 7:00 p.m.
tonight. The winner of Game 13 moves into Sunday’s championship round against
unbeaten Trinity College.
Senior right-hander Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland) picked up his
second career shutout spinning an eight-hitter against the Golden Bears. Ross
walked only two and struck out four. He had the Golden Bears hitting the ball
on ground as the Huskies turned four double plays.
Skeffington led the Huskies’ 17-hit assault on four WNEC pitchers with four
hits. His three homers ties the school single-game mark set by Pete Misiaszek
in 1993, and equaled by Craig Gureckis in 2002. Skeffington now has 11 home
runs on the season, five coming in the NCAA regional against WNEC.
Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had three hits, including a
home run, and juniors Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering), Anthony
D’Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) and Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) had
two hits apiece.
Pike put USM on the board in the second inning with a solo home run, his
ninth of the season. Two batters later, Skeffington hit his first homer, a solo
shot, to make it 2-0. Burleson brought in a third run of the inning with an RBI
single.
Sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) had a two-
run double in the fourth as the Huskies extended their lead to 5-0. Skeffington
added a two-out, solo homer in the sixth.
In the seventh, Pike singled, stole second and advanced to third on a
throwing error. He came home on an RBI single by sophomore Josh Mackey
(Danvers, Mass.). Mackey came around on Skeffington’s third homer of the game.
Skeffington added a two-run single in the eighth to account for the final
tally.
Ross got out of a one-out, first-and-third jam in the sixth when the
Huskies turned their fourth double play of the game. WNEC got runners as far as
third base with two outs in the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to
push a run across.
The win as the third straight in an elimination game for the Huskies, and
avenges a first round loss in the tournament at the hands of the Golden Bears.

Southern Maine Still Alive, Blanks Keene State 8-0
HARWICH, Mass. -- University of Southern Maine junior right-hander Tim
Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec) pitched his first collegiate shutout
Friday blanking Keene State College 8-0 in an elimination game at the 2008 NCAA
Division III Regional Baseball Tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in
Harwich, Mass.
The win keeps the Huskies, 34-13 overall, alive in the eight-team, double-
elimination tournament, and moves them into another elimination game tonight
against Western New England College. WNEC stayed alive Friday morning by
beating Worcester State College 8-3. The USM-WNEC game will be a re-match of a
first round game won by WNEC, 8-6, in 12 innings.
Keene State, which defeated Southern Maine twice on the final day of the
Little East Conference tournament last weekend to win the LEC title, finishes
the season 34-11.
Therrian scattered 11 hits and allowed just one walk while striking out
seven to pick up his fifth win of the season, and the first complete game of his
career. The 6-foot-4 right-hander started Thursday's game against Castleton
State College, but was lifted after two innings when the Huskies jumped out to a
9-0 lead in an eventual 16-7 win so he could come back later in the tournament.
Sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) and junior
Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) led the Huskies offense with three hits
apiece. D'Alfonso drove in two runs with his 14th home run of the season in the
Huskies' four-run fifth inning. Sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) had two
singles, a sacrifice fly and drove in three runs.
For Keene State, senior Joe Rousseau (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Bobby
Doyon (Keene, N.H.) each had three hits. Sophomore Beau Darak (Londonderry,
N.H.) had a double and a single.
The Owls had runners on base against Therrian in every inning, but never
advanced a runner past second base. The Owls best threat came in the fourth
when Doyon led off with a double and freshman John Barber (Brattleboro, Vt.)
walked, but Therrian retired the next two hitters on strikeouts and got the
final out on a fly ball to center field.
Sophomore Ben Sonberg (Bow, N.H.) started on the mound and worked 4 1/3
innings before being lifted. Sonberg suffered his first loss of the season
against three wins.
The Huskies got the only run they would need in the first as singles by
Henry and D'Alfonso put runners at the corners. Junior Ryan Pike (Saco,
Maine/Thornton Academy) beat out a fielder's choice to chase home Henry.
Therrian and Sonberg matched zeroes over the next three innings before the
Huskies exploded for four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Henry led off the fifth with a single, moved to second on a failed pickoff,
and D'Alfonso followed with his 14th homer of the season over the scoreboard in
right field. Pike walked, moved to third on a two-base error on another failed
pickoff, and Mackey brought him home with a sacrifice fly to right field.
After Sonberg was removed in favor of sophomore Mike Riley (East Hartford,
Conn.), senior Eddie Skeffington singled, stole second, advanced to third on a
ground out and came home on a double by freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin,
Conn.).
The Huskies touched up Riley in the sixth when, with two out, D'Alfonso
singled, Pike was hit by a pitch, and Mackey brought home D'Alfonso with a
single. Pike scored on the play on an outfield error.
USM added its final run in the eight when Pike reached on a fielder's
choice, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Mackey's
single through the left side of the infield.

hits and drove in three runs to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 16-7
victory over Castleton State College Thursday morning in an elimination game at
the 2008 NCAA Division III Regional Baseball Tournament being played at
Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
The win keeps the Huskies alive in the eight-team, double-elimination
event, and snapped a three-game losing streak. The Huskies improve to 33-13.
The Spartans, champions of the North Atlantic Conference making their first trip
to the NCAA tournament, end their season at 22-20.
The Huskies built a 9-0 in the strength of an eight-run second inning, then
watched the Spartans come back with a seven-run sixth inning to cut the lead to
9-7. The Huskies iced the decision with seven runs in the eighth inning.
Senior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) also had three hits, including a
double, scored twice and drove in two. Junior Chris Burleson (Portland,
Maine/Deering), sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens

six USM pitchers used in the game, picked up his third win with three shutout
innings of relief.
Senior Brad Polcare (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and sophomore Ted Mills

double in the Spartans' seven-run sixth inning uprising that pulled them back
within two after being down 9-0.
Sophomore Ken Cook (Springfield, Vt.) started for the Spartans and was
tagged with the loss.
Burleson got USM rolling in second inning with a two-run single. Henry
followed with an RBI double, and D'Alfonso slammed an RBI triple to center
field. An infield error and a hit batsman preceded Skeffington's two-run
single.
In the eighth, Stacy got things started with an RBI single. Henry and
D'Alfonso forced home runs with bases loaded walk. Junior Ryan Pike (Saco,
Maine/Thornton Academy) was hit by a pitch to force in the fourth run of the
inning. Sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) capped off the inning with a

NCAA Regional Tournament - First Round
WNEC Defeats Southern Maine in 12 Innings, 8-6
HARWICH, Mass. -- The Western New England College Golden Bears scored two
runs in the 12th inning to snap a 6-6 tie and defeat the University of Southern
Maine Huskies 8-6 in a first round game of the 2008 NCAA Division III Regional
Baseball Tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass.
Trailing 6-3 going into their final time at bat, the Golden Bears used four
singles and a sacrifice fly to tie the score and send the game into extra
innings. Both teams had chances in the 10th and 11th innings, but could not
score. The Golden Bears finally plated two runs in the 12th on a walk, two
singles and a sacrifice fly.
For Western New England, junior Chris Newell (Wallingford, Conn.) had four
hits and scored twice. Sophomore Justin Walz (Groton, Conn.) added three hits,
scored three times and drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore Joe Griglun
(Southington, Conn.) had three hits and three RBI, including the tying RBI in
the ninth and one in the 12th.
Sophomore Matt Rogers (Portsmouth, R.I.), the third WNEC pitcher of the
game, got the win hurling four innings of shutout relief. Senior Chris Anderson
(Moodus, Conn.) picked up the save.
Senior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and sophomore Josh Mackey
(Danvers, Mass.) paced USM's 18-hit attack with four hits apiece. Skeffington
hit a pair of solo home runs, including one in the eighth that gave USM a 6-3
lead at the time. Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) continued his
torrid postseason hitting going 3-for-5 with a walk.
Sophomore Andrew deBethune (St. Albans, Maine/MCI), the third USM pitcher
of the day, was tagged with his first loss of the season.
Down 3-1, Southern Maine sent nine men to the plate in the fifth and scored
four times to take a 5-3 advantage. Skeffington led off the inning with his
first round tripper of the day. After two quick outs, USM strung together five
straight singles to produce three more runs. Junior Anthony D'Alfonso
(Westbrook, Maine), Pike and Mackey each had an RBI single.
The Golden Bears reached USM sophomore starter Mark Schmidt (Gorham, Maine)
and junior reliever Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) for three consecu-
tive singles and a run to open the ninth. After Burleson got a strikeout,
Griglun singled home the second run of the inning, and senior Ryan Kravontka
(Glastonbury, Conn.) followed lifting a sacrifice fly to score Walz with the
tying run.
In the 12th, Newell reached on a one-out walk, and Walz followed with a
single putting runners at the corners. Senior Travis Schwamb (West Springfield,
Mass.), 0-for-6 on the day, singled to score Newell and advance Walz to third.
Girglun brought home Walz with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The loss sends Southern Maine into the losers bracket Thursday (9:30 a.m.)
against the loser of the game between top-seeded Trinity College and eight-seed
Castleton State College. Western New England will play the winner of that game
in the afternoon.

GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight year, a member of the University
of Southern Maine baseball team has been named the Player of the Year in the
Little East Conference. Junior shortstop Chris Burleson (Portland,
Maine/Deering) is the recipient of the award this season following voting by the
conference's eight head coaches. Little East Conference commissioner, Jonathan
Harper, made the announcement Wednesday.
In addition, Harper also announced that freshman catcher Jordan Berthiaume
(Berlin, Conn.) was named Co-Rookie of the Year, sharing the award with Bobby
Doyon of Keene State College, and that five members of the Huskies were named to
the All-Little East first or second team.
Burleson and Berthiaume each earned a spot on the All-LEC first team along
with junior outfielder Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine). Junior designated
hitter Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and junior third baseman
Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) were named to the second team.
Burleson becomes the fifth USM player to win the top player award since
baseball became a conference sport in 1997. He joins last year's recipient Ryan
Bourque, Tyler Delorme (2001), Mike McCullum (1999) and Tony Miner (1997) as
recipients of the Player of the Year honor. Berthiaume joins former USM
standouts Andy Lang (2000) and Peter L'Italien (1999) as winners of the Rookie
of the Year award.
Heading into Wednesday's NCAA Regional Tournament opening game, Burleson
was batting .424 (67 for 158) with 59 runs scored, 10 doubles, five triples,
nine home runs and 47 RBI. He led the LEC in batting average, on-base
percentage (.531), runs scored, and slugging percentage (.722).
Berthiaume is batting .361 (56 for 155) with 37 runs scored, seven doubles,
three homers and 35 RBI. The rookie backstop, who was twice named Rookie of the
Week during the season, had 15 multiple-hit games during the season and a
season-best 12-game hitting streak.
D'Alfonso provided the Huskies a much-need power hitter in the middle of
the lineup. Riding a 15-game hitting streak into the NCAA tournament, he is
batting .394 (69 for 175) with 49 runs scored, 12 doubles, 13 homers and a team-
high 55 RBI. Stacy, whose older brother Greg was a second team All-LEC pick in
2004, is hitting .366 (48 for 131) with 30 runs scored, a team high 14 doubles,
one homer and 33 RBI. Gaffney is hitting .362 (64 for 177) with 42 runs scored,

Keene State Sweeps Southern Maine to Win LEC Title
Owls Advance to NCAA Tournament; Huskies Must Wait
KEENE, N.H. -- The Keene State College Owls scored 35 runs and pounded
out 40 hits Saturday to sweep the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 21-2 and
14-7, to win the 2008 Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament.
The Owls won their first LEC title coming through the losers bracket the
final two days. After losing an 8-4 decision Friday morning to the Huskies, the
Owls eliminated defending champion Eastern Connecticut State University 1-0 late
Friday afternoon to advance to today’s championship round.
Needing to beat the Huskies twice to gain the title and the automatic berth
into the NCAA tournament, the Owls scored a tournament single-game record 21
runs in the opener to force the winner-take-all game. With the two wins, the
Owls are now 33-9 on the season.
The Huskies, who had their season-high nine-game winning streak stopped in
the opener, fall to 32-12 overall and must wait for the NCAA tournament
selection committee to award a possible at-large berth.
In the opener, Keene State jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first three
innings, and led 17-2 after six. Leading the 26-hit attack was senior Greg Ford
(Nashua, N.H.), who was named the tournament’s MVP, with four hits, including a
home run, and four RBI. Seniors Joe Rousseau (Nashua, N.H.) and Ryan Jones
(Nashua, N.H.) and juniors Jamie Chevalier (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) and Jesse
Cahill (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East) all had three hits.
Chevalier pitched the first six innings to pick up his fourth win of the
season. Freshman Ed Lacourse (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) pitched three shutout
innings for the easy save.
Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) accounted for one USM run
with his eighth home run of the season. Sophomore starter Joe Curran
(Arlington, Mass./Bridgton Academy), the first of seven USM hurlers, was saddled
with the loss.
In the title game, Keene State jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second
inning and never looked back. USM closed to within three, 6-3, after six
innings, but KSC plated another six runs in the seventh inning to take a
commanding lead.
Rousseau had another three hits and three RBI for the Owls. Rookie Bobby
Doyon (Keene, N.H.) added two hits and three RBI. Sophomore reliever Rob
Delbuono (Trumbull, Conn.) picked up the win to run his record to 4-0.
The Huskies out-hit the Owls, 15-14, in the title game, but left 14 runners
stranded. Juniors Anthony D’Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) and Ryan Gaff (Salem,
N.H./Central Catholic) had three hits apiece.
Senior Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland), the Huskies’ starter in the
first game of the tournament, drew the starting assignment and was tagged with
the loss.

Little East Conference Tournament - Day One
Southern Maine Downs Rhode Island College 6-5
KEENE, N.H. -- Junior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) hit a three-
run homer to cap off a four-run, eighth-inning rally and give the University of
Southern Maine a 6-5 victory over Rhode Island College in the first day of play
at the 2008 Little East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament. The
tournament is being hosted by top-seeded Keene State College.
The win was the seventh straight for the third-seeded Huskies, equaling
their season-best winning streak, and lifts their record to 30-10. It is the
tenth time in school history that the Huskies have won 30 or more game in a
season. The Anchormen lost their third straight game to fall to 24-14 overall.
Trailing 5-2 in the eighth, the Huskies got a run back when junior Ryan
Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) led off the inning with a solo homer to
left-center field off RIC senior starter Eric Thibault (Somerset, Mass.). After
a strikeout, Thibault surrendered a single to junior Andrew Stacy (Denmark,
Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and was lifted in favor of junior Eric Fama (Wappinger
Falls, N.Y.).
Fama walked the first batter he faced, junior Collin Henry (Penobscot,
Maine/George Stevens Academy) bringing D'Alfonso to the plate. D'Alfonso hit
the first pitch he saw from Fama over the right-center field fence to give USM
the lead.
In the ninth, RIC got a one-out double from junior B.J. Doyon (Douglas,
Mass.) that chased USM junior Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec), the
second USM hurler of the game, from the hill. Junior Chris Burleson (Portland,
Maine/Deering) came on to strike out senior pinch-hitter Rob Reyes (Providence,
R.I./Mt. Pleasant) before intentionally walking junior Chris O'Connors (North
Providence, R.I./Bishop Hendricken), who had homer in the sixth inning.
Burleson then fanned junior Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, Mass./Greater New Bedford)
for the final out.
The Anchormen took a 1-0 lead in the third on two singles, a sacrifice bunt
and an RBI ground out by senior Peter Olson (North Providence. R.I.).
USM scored two runs in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Henry and
D'Alfonso and an RBI single by rookie Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.).
O'Connors tied the game leading off the sixth with a home run. An infield
error and consecutive doubles by sophomores Tim Schabowski (Pascoag,
R.I./Burrillville) and Jared Rossi (Johnston, R.I./N.E. Christian Academy) made
it 4-2. RIC added an unearned run in the seventh to set the stage for
D'Alfonso.
Doyon and Schabowski paced the Anchormen's 10-hit attack with three hits
apiece. D'Alfonso was the lone repeat hitter for the Huskies. Therrian picked
up his third win of the season, and Burleson earned his second save. Fama was
tagged with the loss.
In other first round games played Wednesday, Keene State defeated six-
seeded Western Connecticut State University, 2-1, in 10 innings, and second-
seeded Eastern Connecticut State University came from behind to beat the
University of Massachusetts Boston 6-5.

Southern Maine Sweeps Western Connecticut, 12-10 and 9-5 (8)
GORHAM, Maine -- Rookie right-hander Nick Hahn (Guilford, Conn.) picked
up two wins and the University of Southern Maine came from behind in both games
to sweep Western Connecticut State University, 12-10 and 9-5, in a Little East
Conference baseball doubleheader on a rainy Saturday afternoon at the USM
Baseball Stadium. The second game was called after seven-and-a-half innings
because of darkness.
The sweep extends the Huskies' current winning streak to six games, and
lifts their records to 29-10 overall and 11-3 in conference play. The Colonials
slip to 17-23 overall and 4-10 in the LEC. Both teams will advance to next
week's six-team, double-elimination LEC championship tournament that starts
Wednesday at a site still to be determined.
Hahn came on in the opening game to pitch 2.1 innings giving up one run on
three hits and two walks. He picked up the win when the Huskies snapped a 9-9
tie in the eighth with three runs. In the nightcap, Hahn came on in the sixth
inning and hurled 3.0 shutout innings allowing two hits and two walks while
fanning two. USM plated four runs in the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie.

behind 9-8 when Western Connecticut scored four runs in the sixth inning.
Sophomore Dan Baccaro (Berlin, Conn.) chased home the first run with an RBI
single. Junior Ryan Bedard (Uncasville, Conn.) brought in the second Colonial
run with a single. Two batters later, freshman Zack Dandrea (Wanaque, N.J.)
stroked a two-out, two-run single to give the visitors a 9-8 lead.
Southern Maine tied the game on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Chris
Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) in the sixth. USM scored three in the eighth
on a two-run triple by junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and an
RBI single by Burleson.
Each team had 17 hits in the opening game that took 3:44 to play due to
numerous stoppages to tend the field. Freshman Mike Baccaro (Berlin, Conn.) led
the Colonials with four hits, and Dan Baccaro had three hits, including a pair
of doubles. Freshman Jeff Gordon (Milford, Conn.) also had three hits. Pike,
freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.) and junior Anthony D'Alfonso
(Westbrook, Maine) had three hits apiece for Southern Maine.
In the second game, Western Connecticut built a 3-0 lead with single runs
in the first, third and fourth innings. The run in the third came on a long
home run to left field by senior Matt Gardiner (Terryville, Conn.), his eighth
homer of the season. Dan Baccaro had an RBI single in the first.
The Huskies scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single
by sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy), an RBI
single by senior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and a two-run single by
junior Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic). The fifth run scored on a
wild pitch.
Western Connecticut tied the scored in the sixth on a bases loaded walk to
sophomore Sam McNeil (Gales Ferry, Conn./Ledyard) and an RBI single by junior
Nick Ross (Oakdale, Conn./Montville).
With darkness encroaching, USM scored four runs, all after two were out, in
the seventh to take a 9-5 lead. Junior Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg
Academy) snapped the tie with an RBI double that scored Burleson. Henry
followed with an RBI single. Skeffington drove in the third run, and the final
run came in on an infield throwing error.
After three infield pop outs in the WC eighth, the umpires called the game.
Stacy had three hits to pace USM's 13-hit attack. Burleson, Henry and
Skeffington chipped in two hits each. Gardiner had a double and a homer for the
Colonials. Sophomore southpaw Joe Mangano (Stamford, Conn.) went 6.2 innings

Southern Maine Edges St. Joseph’s 6-4
STANDISH, Maine -- Juniors Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) and
Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) combined for five hits, four runs scored
and three RBI as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the St.
Joseph's College Monks 6-4 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday evening
at Mahaney Diamond in Standish.
The win was the third straight, and seventh in the last eight games, for
the Huskies who improve to 26-10 on the season and earn a split of the season
series between the two teams. The loss snapped the Monks' five-game winning
streak and leaves them at 25-14.
Burleson had three hits, including a double, and scored twice. He also
made his first pitching appearance of the season coming on in the ninth to
strike out the final St. Joseph's batter for his first save. D'Alfonso hit a
big two-out, three-run homer in the third inning that staked USM to a 4-1 lead.
He also singled in the fifth and walked twice.
Senior Brian Schools (Gorham, Maine) and sophomore Ben Grant-Roy
(Biddeford, Maine) led the Monks' 10-hit attack with three hits apiece. Senior
Dustin Spiller (Gorham, Maine) had a pair of singles.
USM senior right-hander Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland) went the
first seven innings to pick up his fourth win of the season. Ross gave up eight
hits, three walks and two earned runs while tying his career-high with nine
strikeouts. Sophomore Andrew Keirstead (Westbrook, Maine), who pitched into the
ninth for St. Joseph's, was saddled with his second loss against five wins.
Keirstead surrendered 11 hits and walked seven.
The teams traded runs in the first. Burleson led off the game with a
double and came home on a one-out single by sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot,
Maine/George Stevens Academy). The Monks took advantage of three Huskies errors
to plate their run.
In the third, Keirstead walked junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton
Academy) and Burleson to open the inning. After retiring the next two batters,
Keirstead made a mistake to D'Alfonso who blasted his 11th home run of the
season to right-center field.
USM added a single run in the fifth on a heads up base running play by
junior Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), who scored from third on
a short fly ball.

Stacy, who came on in relief of freshman Nick Hahn (Guilford, Conn.), with a
single to load the bases. Freshman Nick Johnson (Yuma, Ariz.) hit into a
fielder’s choice to chase home a run. Stacy would strike out the next batter
before Burleson came on to record the final out, stranding the potential tying
runs.

Southern Maine Comes From Behind to Beat Endicott 8-6
BEVERLY, Mass. - The University of Southern Maine rallied to score eight
runs in the final two innings to erase a 6-2 deficit and defeat Endicott College
8-6 in a non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon in Beverly,
Massachusetts.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies and improves their record to
22-9 overall. The Gulls slip to 18-16.
The Gulls got started with a quick run in the home half of the first, as
senior Dan Gomez (East Longmeadow, Mass.) grounded out to second to allow Aaron
Santos (Cambridge, Mass.) to score from third for the 1-0 lead. The Gulls would
tack on five more runs in the second inning, including a two-run homer from
freshman Luis Uribe (Boston, Mass.) to give Endicott a 6-0 lead. Uribe's home
run was his third in as many days, upping his season total to six.
The visitors were able to get a run back in the top of the third as junior
Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) cranked a solo shot to make the score
6-1. Endicott starter Erik Fields (Swampscott, Mass.) was able to get himself
out of the inning with no further damage.
Rookie Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.) led the fifth off with a double to
left to put a runner in scoring position for the Huskies. Berthiaume would
eventually score on a ground out to second by freshman Greg Holmes (West
Newbury, Mass./Central Catholic) to bring Southern Maine within four.
The Huskies broke out in the top of the eighth as Pike reached on an error
to begin the frame. Following three-straight walks, junior Anthony D'Alfonso
(Westbrook, Maine) hit an absolute bomb to centerfield, driving the ball off the
siding of Endicott's Post Center for an apparent grand slam. One of USM's base
runners, however, missed home plate while rounding the bases, allowing Endicott
to appeal the misstep and record the second out of the inning. D'Alfonso was
credited with three RBIs on his long ball. The Huskies would score once more
before the end of the inning on an RBI single to right from Andrew Stacy
(Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) to give USM a 7-6 lead.
Southern Maine added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as junior
Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) connected on a leadoff homer to give
the Huskies a two-run cushion.
D'Alfonso was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in the win. Berthiaume also had a
pair of hits to go along with two runs scored.
Freshman right-hander Nick Hahn (Guilford, Conn.) gave the Huskies a
brilliant relief outing, hurling 6.2 innings of five-hit shutout ball coming on
in the third inning. Junior Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec) came on
to get the final out and record his second save of the season.
Endicott was led by Uribe's two hits and two RBIs in the losing effort.
Aaron Santos connected for two hits and scored twice. Mike Barbati (Melrose,
Mass.) had a solid day at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with a run scored. Fields
was charged with the loss to even his record to 3-3. He gave up seven runs - six
earned - walking four and striking out two.
Endicott returns to action on Friday (3:30 p.m.) hosting Brandeis
University for a non-conference game at North Field. Southern Maine will
entertain Keene State in a conference doubleheader on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).

Southern Maine Hits Five HR, Rallies to Beat Thomas 11-8
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook)
went 4-for-5, including hitting a pair of home runs, and drove in four runs to
lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 11-8 win over the Thomas
College Terriers in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at the
USM Baseball Stadium in Gorham.
Earning their second straight win, Southern Maine improves to 21-9 on the
season. Suffering its sixth consecutive loss, Thomas dips to 9-15.
D'Alfonso, who has a team-leading nine home runs on the season, was one of
three USM players to hit home runs in the contest as the home side tagged Thomas
pitching for five round trippers in the game. Junior Chris Burleson (Portland,
Maine/Deering) connected for a pair of home runs to give him seven for the
season, and sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) blasted his third of the
year.
After opening up a 1-0 lead in the first on a first-pitch, solo shot from
Burleson, the Huskies trailed the Terriers 5-1 after two-and-a-half innings.
Sophomore Ryan Cotnoir (Augusta, Maine) pulled the Terriers even with the
Huskies in the second with an RBI double. The Terriers plated four runs in the
third, including three on a bases-loaded double from sophomore Nicholas Cloutier
(Topsham, Maine). Cloutier led the Terriers offensively with three RBI on two
singles and double.
USM got two runs back in the bottom of the third on back-to-back home runs
from D'Alfonso and Mackey to trail 5-3.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Thomas added a run in the fifth to lead
6-3 when junior Michael Chamard (Livermore Falls, Maine) came around to score on
a USM error after reaching base safely with a single.
However, the Huskies were able to rally for four runs in their turn at bat
on three hits, two walks and an error. D'Alfonso plated two runs connecting on
his second home run of the game. The third run scored on an outfield error, and
junior Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine) added an RBI single to put the Huskies
ahead.
Southern Maine added two more runs in the sixth on Burleson's two-run
homer, and another in the seventh to lead 10-6. Stowell collected his second
RBI single of the game in the seventh to score Mackey who led off the inning
with a double.
Thomas cut the lead to two, plating two runs in the eighth on a sacrifice
fly from Cotnoir and a double from freshman Scott Geel (Calais, Maine). USM
added a run in the bottom of the eighth on a D'Alfonso single for the 11-8
final.
Southern Maine freshman Mike Eaton (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) earned the
win, coming on in relief for the Huskies in the third inning. Eaton pitched 2.3
innings allowing two hits, no earned runs and struck out six. Junior Tim
Therrian (New Portland, Maine) earned the save striking out the only batter he
faced. Thomas junior Sam Shain (Hallowell, Maine) took the loss allowing seven
runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings.
Southern Maine travels to Endicott College on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) for a
rescheduled game. Thomas hosts Husson College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a
