D'Alfonso, Burleson Named to ABCA Division III All-America Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine baseball team have been named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III All-America team that was announced Thursday evening at the pre- tournament banquet for NCAA Division III Championship Finals being played in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. Named to the ABCA All-America first team was junior outfielder Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine), and selected to the third team was junior shortstop Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering). The two are the first USM players named to the ABCA All-America team since outfielder Ryan Bourque was picked to the second team in 2006. This is the first time since 2001 that two USM players have been named to the All-America team in the same year. Outfielder Tyler Delorme (second team) and shortstop Pat Toomey (third team) were the last Huskies duo to be named All- Americans in the same year. D'Alfonso, also named to the D3Baseball.com All-America third team earlier in the week, previously was named to the All-Little East Conference and New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) All-New England first teams. Burleson, who moved to shortstop this season after spending two years as the Huskies’ center fielder, was also named to the All-LEC and All-New England first teams, and was selected as the Player of the Year by both organizations. D'Alfonso provided the Huskies a much-need power hitter in the middle of their lineup. The 6-foot-5, left-handed hitter finished the season with a 21- game hitting streak. For the season, he batted .393 (81 for 206) with 58 runs scored, 13 doubles, three triples, 15 homers and a team-high 62 RBI. He led the team with 145 total bases and a .704 slugging percentage. He also led the team in stolen bases with 19. According to the latest Little East Conference statistics, D'Alfonso was ranked first in the conference in slugging percentage, hits, RBI, home runs, and total bases, third in runs scored and fourth in batting average. Burleson led the conference in runs scored and walks, was second in hits, triples, and stolen bases, and fourth in on-base percentage and total bases (119). Southern Maine, which loses only two players, finished the 2008 season with a 36-14 overall record, and an 11-3 mark (tied for second) in LEC play. NCAA Regional Tournament - Game 14 Trinity Ends Southern Maine's Season 10-3
HARWICH, Mass. -- Junior pitcher Chandler Barnard (Lubbock, Texas) scattered four hits in a complete-game effort to lead the undefeated and top- seeded Trinity College Bantams to a 10-3 win over the fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies Sunday afternoon in the championship game of the 2008 NCAA Division III Regional Tournament played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. With the win, the undefeated Bantams earn their 41st consecutive win and advance to the 2008 NCAA Division III Baseball World Series. The 41 consecutive wins sets an NCAA Division III record for consecutive wins in a season, breaking the previous mark of 40 set by Marietta College in 1999. The loss snapped Southern Maine’s run of four straight wins in elimination games, and ended the Huskies season at 36-14. The Huskies 36 wins equals the fourth highest single-season total in the history of the program. Barnard improved to 10-0 with the win, fanning seven batters and yielding just one walk. Barnard also helped himself at the plate driving in three runs on a perfect 3-for-3 day, including a two-run double that got the ball rolling in a three-run second inning for Trinity. Trinity added four more runs in the bottom of the third, ignited by a solo home run to left field from junior Ryan Piacentini (Portland, Maine/Deering). The Bantams would take advantage of three more hits and two hit batsmen to score three additional runs and extend their lead to 7-0. Southern Maine outscored Trinity 3-1 over the next three innings to pull to within five, 8-3. Junior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) rocketed a solo home run to left field in the top of the fourth inning to score the Huskies’ first run of the game. Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) blasted a two-run homer in the sixth. Junior Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) connected two of Southern Maine’s four hits in the game, including a double to left field in the fifth inning. The Trinity hitters tagged five USM pitchers for 12 hits in the game, led by Barnard with three and two each from Piacentini, sophomore Kent Graham (Longmeadow, Mass./Choate) and senior Timothy Bourdon (Simsbury, Conn./Northwest Catholic). Bourdon finished the game with three RBI. USM starting pitcher, sophomore Andrew deBethune (St. Albans, Maine/Maine Central Institute), was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on four hits and a walk in two innings. Named to the all-tournament team from USM were D'Alfonso, senior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) and sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.). Trinity will face SUNY Cortland (42-3), the winner of the New York Regional, in the first round of the NCAA Division III World Series at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. NCAA Regional Tournament – Game 13 Southern Maine Defeats Wheaton 9-3 to Advance to Championship Round
HARWICH, Mass. -- Sophomore southpaw Mark Schmidt (Gorham, Maine) scattered 11 hits in a complete effort as the University of Southern Maine defeated Wheaton College, 9-3, Saturday night in Game 13 of the eight-team, double-elimination NCAA Division III Regional Tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. The win moves the fourth-seeded Huskies into the championship round on Sunday against top seeded and unbeaten Trinity College. The Huskies will need to beat the Bantams twice Sunday to advance to the Division III World Series in Grand Chute, Wisconsin, next weekend. Southern Maine, 36-13 overall, had not beaten Wheaton in the previous nine games played between the two teams prior to Saturday night. USM last beat Wheaton on April 4, 2004. Wheaton finishes the season 34-10. Schmidt, who pitched eight-plus innings in the opening game of the tournament against Western New England College getting a no decision, allowed 11 hits and five walks while striking out eight to improve his record to 6-0 on the season. Wheaton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a leadoff double by sophomore Paul Malaguti (Andover, Mass.) and a two-out single by freshman Sean Munley (Trenton, N.J.). The Lyons’ lead lasted until the third when the Huskies put two runs up on the board. Three straight singles, the last by sophomore Ryan Jones (Bangor, Maine), to open the USM third tied the game at 1-1. Sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) snapped the tie with a one-out single. The Huskies sent ten men to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring six runs on seven hits. Henry produced the first two runs with his third home run of the season. Junior Anthony D’Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) followed with a triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy). Four straight hits, the last a two-run double by sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.), pushed the lead to 8-1. The Lyons got one back in the home half of the fifth on an infield error, but Schmidt got out of a bases loaded jam with a fly ball to left. Southern Maine added an insurance run in the seventh when Pike scored from third as Mackey got caught in a rundown during a double steal attempt. Wheaton added its final run in the ninth on a Munley single, a double by sophomore Jeff Lieneck (Foxboro, Mass.) and an RBI ground out by junior Robert Foote (Walpole, Mass.). Schmidt got the final out of the game on a strikeout. Henry and Mackey led the Huskies 15-hit attack with three hits apiece. Henry also had three RBI. Junior Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.) each had a pair of hits. Every hitter in the USM lineup had at least one hit. Malaguti, Munley and sophomore Sean Buckley (Webster, Mass.) had two hits each for Wheaton. NCAA Regional Tournament – Game 12 Southern Maine Shuts Out WNEC 11-0 to Stay Alive
HARWICH, Mass. -- Senior Eddie Skeffington (Everett, Mass.) hit a record tying three home runs and drove in six runs to lead the University of Southern Maine to an 11-0 victory over Western New England College in Game 12 of the 2008 NCAA Division III Regional Tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. The win sends the Huskies into Game 13 against Wheaton College at 7:00 p.m. tonight. The winner of Game 13 moves into Sunday’s championship round against unbeaten Trinity College. Senior right-hander Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland) picked up his second career shutout spinning an eight-hitter against the Golden Bears. Ross walked only two and struck out four. He had the Golden Bears hitting the ball on ground as the Huskies turned four double plays. Skeffington led the Huskies’ 17-hit assault on four WNEC pitchers with four hits. His three homers ties the school single-game mark set by Pete Misiaszek in 1993, and equaled by Craig Gureckis in 2002. Skeffington now has 11 home runs on the season, five coming in the NCAA regional against WNEC. Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had three hits, including a home run, and juniors Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering), Anthony D’Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) and Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) had two hits apiece. Pike put USM on the board in the second inning with a solo home run, his ninth of the season. Two batters later, Skeffington hit his first homer, a solo shot, to make it 2-0. Burleson brought in a third run of the inning with an RBI single. Sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) had a two- run double in the fourth as the Huskies extended their lead to 5-0. Skeffington added a two-out, solo homer in the sixth. In the seventh, Pike singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. He came home on an RBI single by sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.). Mackey came around on Skeffington’s third homer of the game. Skeffington added a two-run single in the eighth to account for the final tally. Ross got out of a one-out, first-and-third jam in the sixth when the Huskies turned their fourth double play of the game. WNEC got runners as far as third base with two outs in the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to push a run across. The win as the third straight in an elimination game for the Huskies, and avenges a first round loss in the tournament at the hands of the Golden Bears. The Huskies are now 35-13 overall. Southern Maine Still Alive, Blanks Keene State 8-0
HARWICH, Mass. -- University of Southern Maine junior right-hander Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec) pitched his first collegiate shutout Friday blanking Keene State College 8-0 in an elimination game at the 2008 NCAA Division III Regional Baseball Tournament being played at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. The win keeps the Huskies, 34-13 overall, alive in the eight-team, double- elimination tournament, and moves them into another elimination game tonight against Western New England College. WNEC stayed alive Friday morning by beating Worcester State College 8-3. The USM-WNEC game will be a re-match of a first round game won by WNEC, 8-6, in 12 innings. Keene State, which defeated Southern Maine twice on the final day of the Little East Conference tournament last weekend to win the LEC title, finishes the season 34-11. Therrian scattered 11 hits and allowed just one walk while striking out seven to pick up his fifth win of the season, and the first complete game of his career. The 6-foot-4 right-hander started Thursday's game against Castleton State College, but was lifted after two innings when the Huskies jumped out to a 9-0 lead in an eventual 16-7 win so he could come back later in the tournament. Sophomore Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) and junior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) led the Huskies offense with three hits apiece. D'Alfonso drove in two runs with his 14th home run of the season in the Huskies' four-run fifth inning. Sophomore Josh Mackey (Danvers, Mass.) had two singles, a sacrifice fly and drove in three runs. For Keene State, senior Joe Rousseau (Nashua, N.H.) and freshman Bobby Doyon (Keene, N.H.) each had three hits. Sophomore Beau Darak (Londonderry, N.H.) had a double and a single. The Owls had runners on base against Therrian in every inning, but never advanced a runner past second base. The Owls best threat came in the fourth when Doyon led off with a double and freshman John Barber (Brattleboro, Vt.) walked, but Therrian retired the next two hitters on strikeouts and got the final out on a fly ball to center field. Sophomore Ben Sonberg (Bow, N.H.) started on the mound and worked 4 1/3 innings before being lifted. Sonberg suffered his first loss of the season against three wins. The Huskies got the only run they would need in the first as singles by Henry and D'Alfonso put runners at the corners. Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) beat out a fielder's choice to chase home Henry. Therrian and Sonberg matched zeroes over the next three innings before the Huskies exploded for four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Henry led off the fifth with a single, moved to second on a failed pickoff, and D'Alfonso followed with his 14th homer of the season over the scoreboard in right field. Pike walked, moved to third on a two-base error on another failed pickoff, and Mackey brought him home with a sacrifice fly to right field. After Sonberg was removed in favor of sophomore Mike Riley (East Hartford, Conn.), senior Eddie Skeffington singled, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and came home on a double by freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.). The Huskies touched up Riley in the sixth when, with two out, D'Alfonso singled, Pike was hit by a pitch, and Mackey brought home D'Alfonso with a single. Pike scored on the play on an outfield error. USM added its final run in the eight when Pike reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Mackey's single through the left side of the infield. The rookie backstop, who was twice named Rookie of the Week during the season, had 15 multiple-hit games during the season and a season-best 12-game hitting streak. D'Alfonso provided the Huskies a much-need power hitter in the middle of the lineup. Riding a 15-game hitting streak into the NCAA tournament, he is batting .394 (69 for 175) with 49 runs scored, 12 doubles, 13 homers and a team- high 55 RBI. The Huskies broke out in the top of the eighth as Pike reached on an error to begin the frame. Following three-straight walks, junior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) hit an absolute bomb to centerfield, driving the ball off the siding of Endicott's Post Center for an apparent grand slam. One of USM's base runners, however, missed home plate while rounding the bases, allowing Endicott to appeal the misstep and record the second out of the inning. D'Alfonso was credited with three RBIs on his long ball. The Huskies would score once more before the end of the inning on an RBI single to right from Andrew Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) to give USM a 7-6 lead. Southern Maine added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as junior Chris Burleson (Portland, Maine/Deering) connected on a leadoff homer to give the Huskies a two-run cushion. D'Alfonso was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in the win. Berthiaume also had a pair of hits to go along with two runs scored. Freshman right-hander Nick Hahn (Guilford, Conn.) gave the Huskies a brilliant relief outing, hurling 6.2 innings of five-hit shutout ball coming on in the third inning. Junior Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine/Carrabec) came on to get the final out and record his second save of the season. Endicott was led by Uribe's two hits and two RBIs in the losing effort. Aaron Santos connected for two hits and scored twice. Mike Barbati (Melrose, Mass.) had a solid day at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with a run scored. Fields was charged with the loss to even his record to 3-3. He gave up seven runs - six earned - walking four and striking out two. Endicott returns to action on Friday (3:30 p.m.) hosting Brandeis University for a non-conference game at North Field. Southern Maine will entertain Keene State in a conference doubleheader on Saturday (12:00 p.m.). At Beverly, Mass. After opening up a 1-0 lead in the first on a first-pitch, solo shot from Burleson, the Huskies trailed the Terriers 5-1 after two-and-a-half innings. Sophomore Ryan Cotnoir (Augusta, Maine) pulled the Terriers even with the Huskies in the second with an RBI double. The Terriers plated four runs in the third, including three on a bases-loaded double from sophomore Nicholas Cloutier (Topsham, Maine). Cloutier led the Terriers offensively with three RBI on two singles and double. USM got two runs back in the bottom of the third on back-to-back home runs from D'Alfonso and Mackey to trail 5-3. After a scoreless fourth inning, Thomas added a run in the fifth to lead 6-3 when junior Michael Chamard (Livermore Falls, Maine) came around to score on a USM error after reaching base safely with a single. However, the Huskies were able to rally for four runs in their turn at bat on three hits, two walks and an error. D'Alfonso plated two runs connecting on his second home run of the game. The third run scored on an outfield error, and junior Josh Stowell (Portland, Maine) added an RBI single to put the Huskies ahead. Southern Maine added two more runs in the sixth on Burleson's two-run homer, and another in the seventh to lead 10-6. Stowell collected his second RBI single of the game in the seventh to score Mackey who led off the inning with a double. Thomas cut the lead to two, plating two runs in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Cotnoir and a double from freshman Scott Geel (Calais, Maine). USM added a run in the bottom of the eighth on a D'Alfonso single for the 11-8 final. Southern Maine freshman Mike Eaton (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) earned the win, coming on in relief for the Huskies in the third inning. Eaton pitched 2.3 innings allowing two hits, no earned runs and struck out six. Junior Tim Therrian (New Portland, Maine) earned the save striking out the only batter he faced. Thomas junior Sam Shain (Hallowell, Maine) took the loss allowing seven runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings. Southern Maine travels to Endicott College on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) for a rescheduled game. Thomas hosts Husson College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader.
