Fairchild Named ABCA Third Team All-American

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore pitcher-infielder Tip Fairchild (Monmouth,
Maine/Monmouth Academy) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball
team has been named to the NCAA Division III All-American third team as selected
by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). The All-American teams
were announced Thursday evening as part of the NCAA Division III National
Championship festivities in Grand Chute, Wisconsin.
Fairchild is the Huskies’ first ABCA All-American since Tyler Delorme and

program to earn an All-American citation.
Named to the NEIBA All-New England first team and All-Little East
Conference second team earlier this month, Fairchild had an outstanding
sophomore season. He compiled a 9-1 record with three saves and a staff low
1.41 ERA. He worked 70.0 innings allowing 51 hits, 11 earned runs and 18 walks
while striking out 72. He is second in the Little East Conference in wins and
among the leaders in innings pitched, strikeouts, and saves.
In addition to his stellar pitching performance, Fairchild batted .364 (56
for 154) with 12 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 26 RBI.

Five USM Huskies Land on All-LEC Baseball Team

GORHAM, Maine -- Five members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
baseball team have earned spots on the All-Little East Conference first and second
teams as voted by the league's head coaches. The all-conference teams and
individual awards were announced Monday morning by William M. Moore, commissioner
of the Little East Conference.
Named to the All-LEC first team were senior third baseman Brian Marshall
(Danvers, Mass.) and senior outfielders Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine/Greely HS)
and Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine/Greely HS). Grabbing spots on the second
team were junior first baseman Greg Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and
sophomore pitcher Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine/Monmouth Academy).
This is Marshall's third consecutive appearance on the all-conference team.
He was the first team selection at shortstop last season and a second team pick at
third base in 2002. Lemieux was named to the first team for the second straight
year. Brewer, Fairchild and Stacy made the all-conference team for the first
time.
Lemieux was the Huskies' leading hitter this season finishing the year with a
.403 average (77 for 191). He scored a team-high 48 runs and had 13 doubles,
three triples, two home runs, team-high nine stolen bases and 43 RBI. According
to conference statistics released Monday, Lemieux was third in batting average,
first in hits (77), second in runs scored, fourth in total bases (102) and fourth
in RBI.
Brewer was the Huskies' second leading hitter with a .380 average (52 for
137). Despite missing the first ten games of the season recovering from an
injury, he led the team in home runs (13), extra base hits (26), total bases
(106), slugging percentage (.774) and RBI (47). In the conference, Brewer is
ranked eighth in batting average, second in home runs, second in total bases,
first in slugging and second in RBI.
     Marshall finished the season batting a career-best .365 (61 for 167) with 41
runs scored, 15 doubles, two triples, five homers and 38 RBI. He is 14th in the
conference in batting, fourth in hits, eighth in runs scored, sixth in total bases
and ninth in RBI.
Fairchild had an outstanding second season. Named to the all-conference
second team as a pitcher, he compiled a 9-1 record with three saves and a staff
low 1.41 ERA. He worked 70.0 innings allowing 51 hits, 11 earned runs and 18
walks while striking out 72. He leads the conference in wins, is fourth in
innings pitched, second in strikeouts, and tied for the lead in saves.
In addition to his stellar pitching performance, Fairchild batted .364 (56
for 154) with 12 doubles, one triple, five home runs and 26 RBI.
Stacy, who moved to first base this season, batted .356 (53 for 149) with 11
doubles, one triple, four home runs and 32 RBI.
The Huskies finished the 2004 campaign with a 31-13-1 overall record and a
10-4 mark (second place) in Little East play. They advanced to the finals of the
championship tournament played last weekend.

                        Little East Conference Tournament
Eastern Connecticut Wins Title, Beats Southern Maine 9-3

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Junior Ty Bongiovanni (Meriden, Conn.) and senior
Joey Serfass (Newington, Conn.) combined to hurl nine innings of scoreless
relief as the top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors came back
from an early three-run deficit to defeat the second-seeded University of
Southern Maine Huskies 9-3 and win the 2004 Little East Conference Baseball
Championship tournament played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The title is the third in the last four years for the Warriors, and their
fourth in the eight-year history of the LEC tournament. Along with the title,
Eastern Connecticut, now 35-9 overall, also receives an automatic berth into the
2004 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship Tournament.
Southern Maine, bidding for its third LEC title and first since 1999, falls
to 31-13-1 overall. The Huskies will wait and see if they receive one of the
three at-large berths into the NCAA tournament.
Bongiovanni came into the game in the first inning in relief of junior
right-handed starter Joe Riley (East Hartford, Conn.) after Riley faced four
batters and did not record an out. Bongiovanni, a southpaw, allowed only two
hits and one walk while striking out nine over 5.2 innings. He would get credit
for the win, his first of the season against three losses.
Serfass came into the game with two on and two out in the sixth inning and
got out of a jam with a strikeout. He gave up four singles and one walk while
fanning four over the final 3.1 to pick up his first save of the year.
Southern Maine jumped on Riley in the first inning for three runs.
Freshman SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) led off with a single and went to
third on a double by senior 3B Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.). A walk to
senior OF Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) loaded the bases. A throwing error
while senior OF Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) was batting allowed Vardaro
to score. Brewer would finally walk to reload the bases and Riley’s day was
finished.
A Bongiovanni wild pitch allowed Marshall to score, and Lemieux came in on
sophomore DH Tip Fairchild’s (Monmouth, Maine) groundout to second base.
Eastern Connecticut struck right back for a pair of runs in the second
inning on an RBI double by sophomore 1B Zach Mehrbach (Lyme, N.H.) and a
fielder’s choice.
The Warriors took the lead for good in the third inning scoring three runs.
Junior OF Scott Hayward (Meriden, Conn.) knocked in the first run with an RBI
single. After senior OF Dwight Wildman (Seymour, Conn.) doubled, both runners
scored on a single off the bat of junior DH Leon Galemba (Fairfield, Conn.) to
make it 5-3.
Hayward hit a one-out, solo homer to ignite a four-run sixth inning for the
Warriors. Mehrbach drove in two runs with a single, and he came all the way
around to score on the play when the Huskies committed a pair of errors.
Merhbach, Hayward and Galemba each had a pair of hits and combined for
seven RBI for the Warriors. ECSU senior 2B Eugene Julien (Brockton, Mass.) was
named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. He batted .438 with nine runs
scored and played flawless defense in the field.
Marshall and Fairchild were the only repeat hitters for the Huskies. USM
junior right-handed starter Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.), who went 6.1 innings, was
tagged with the loss.

Huskies Advance to LEC Championship Round

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Freshman SS Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) had four
hits, scored three runs and drove in four to lead the second-seeded University
of Southern Maine Huskies to a 12-6 victory over the fourth-seeded University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in an elimination game of the six-team, double-
elimination Little East Conference Baseball Championship tournament being played
at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The victory advances the Huskies into Saturday’s championship round against
top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University. USM, 31-12-1 overall and 3-1
in the tournament, must beat Eastern Connecticut twice to win its first LEC

UMass Dartmouth, which beat the USM in a second round game on Thursday,
finished its season at 25-15. The Corsairs had lost earlier in the day to
Eastern Connecticut 2-0.
Southern Maine snapped a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth by taking
advantage of four hits, two walks, a wild pitch and two Corsair errors to push
five runs across the plate. Freshman C Joe McGhee (Walpole, Mass.) snapped the
tie with an RBI single. He moved to third on a double by freshman Joe Ganley
(Keene, N.H.), and both scored on Vardaro’s two-run single. Vardaro then stole
second and went to third on an error. He scored on a two-out bunt single by
senior OF Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine). Lemieux later scored on an infield
throwing error.
Vardaro had a two-run triple in the seventh, and later scored as the
Huskies plated three insurance runs.
UMD grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the second against USM junior right-handed
starter Erik Kent (Newburyport, Mass.) on a groundout and an RBI single by
senior C John Macone (Stoneham, Mass.). USM tied the game in its half of the
inning on a two-run homer by sophomore DH Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine).
The Huskies grabbed their first lead in the third when senior OF Brandon
Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) doubled home Vardaro, took third on the throw, and
scored on an error.
Junior 3B Shaun Ferreira (Acushnet, Mass.) doubled in a run in the fifth
for UMD, and junior OF Ryan Sullivan (Chicopee, Mass.) tied the game in the top
of the sixth with an RBI single.
Sophomore left-hander Sam Handy (South Burlington, Vt.) picked up the win
for the Huskies with five solid innings of long relief. He allowed six hits and
three walks while fanning six. Only one runs scored against him was earned.
Fairchild entered the game in the seventh and pitched 2.2 hitless innings to
earn his third save of the season.
Junior Dan DeCosta (Somerset, Mass.), the first of five UMD hurlers, was
the losing pitcher.
Southern Maine pounded out 16 hits, led by Vardaro. Senior 3B Brian
Marshall (Danvers, Mass.), Brewer, Fairchild and Ganley all had two hits for the
Huskies. Sullivan and junior OF Chris Waymon (Wareham, Mass.) each had two hits
for the Corsairs.

                        Little East Conference Tournament
USM Comes From Behind to Beat Keene State 5-4
Huskies to Face UMass Dartmouth for the Right to Advance

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Sophomore right-handed pitcher Tip Fairchild
(Monmouth, Maine) hurled six innings of scoreless, five-hit relief to pick up
his ninth win of the season as the University of Southern Maine Huskies came
from behind to defeat the Keene State College Owls 5-4 in an elimination game of
the six-team, double-elimination Little East Conference Baseball Championship
tournament being played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The win keeps the Huskies, 30-12-1 overall and 2-1 in the tournament, alive
and moves them into tonight’s elimination game against the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth. UMD was knocked out of the winners bracket by top-
seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in a battle of unbeaten teams
earlier in the day. Eastern Connecticut advances to the championship round on
Saturday against the winner of the USM-UMD game needing one win to take the
title.
Fairchild came on in relief of freshman starter Josh Armandi (Jay, Maine)
in the fourth after two runs were in and no one out. Keene sophomore Jeremy
Schilling (Centerville, Mass.) led off with a homer and senior Justin Hickman
(Mont Vernon, N.H.) came across with the second run on an RBI single by freshman
John Grainger (Keene, N.H.). The third run of the inning, which was charged to
Armandi and gave the Owls a 4-1 lead, scored on a single by senior Tim Kendrick
(Middletown, R.I.).
That would be the last run the Owls would get as Fairchild gave up only
four singles and two walks over the final five innings. Keene’s best chance to
score came in the eighth when back-to-back, two-out singles put runners at the
corners, but Fairchild fanned freshman Matt Beam (Alstead, N.H.) to quell the
threat.
Trailing by three going into the fifth, the Huskies scored three times to
tie the game. Freshman Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) singled, and moved to third on
a double by freshman Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.). Senior Brian Marshall
(Danvers, Mass.) then clouted a three-run homer to left-center field to tie the
score.
The winning run came across in the eighth inning when senior Brandon Brewer
(Cumberland, Maine) walked to lead off and came all the way around from first
base on an error.
Keene State struck first on a solo homer by Hickman in the second inning.
USM tied the game in the third when freshman Ryan Bourque (Sanford, Maine)
scored on an infield error after hitting his school record eighth triple of the
season to lead off.
Vardaro, Marshall and Bourque each had a pair of hits for the Huskies.
Grainger had three hits for the Owls while Hickman had a double and homer and
scored two runs.
Freshman Rick Stromgren (Keene, N.H.), who walked Brewer to start the USM
eighth before being lifted in favor of sophomore Brian Dimitruk (Columbus,
N.J.), to tagged with his third loss of the year against three wins. Two of the
five runs charged to Stromgren were unearned.

the Anchormen down in order in the ninth to pick up his eighth win of the season.

inning. Junior Brandon White (Foster, R.I.) drove in the first run with a single,
and came home on a triple by sophomore Mike Naylor (Warwick, R.I.). Naylor then
scored in a double by senior Eric Gibree (Bristol, R.I.).
USM got a single run in the third when Lemieux, who was hit by a pitch
leading off, scored on a double by Stacy. The Huskies tied the game in the fourth
on an RBI single by Lemieux and an RBI double by Brewer.
The Anchormen regained their three-run advantage in the fifth on an RBI
double by Gibree, an RBI double by junior Chris Smaldone (Johnston, R.I.) and an
RBI single by freshman Tim Henault (East Greenwich, R.I.).

and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brewer.

three hits, including a pair of doubles, for the Anchormen.
Junior Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, R.I.), who came on in relief after Marshall's
triple in the sixth inning, was the tough-luck loser.

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) singled with one
out in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive in freshman Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.)
from third base and give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a come-from-
behind, 9-8 victory over the Babson College Beavers in a non-conference game
Sunday afternoon at Towers Field.
With the win, Southern Maine concluded the regular season with a 28-11-1

Vera (Yarmouth, Mass.) did most of the damage with a two-out, bases-loaded double
that scored three runs. Junior Tyler Doehler (Lakeville, Mass.) followed with
another double to score Vera.

Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.), and another in the seventh on an RBI single by
senior Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) to pull within one at 5-4.

                           Huskies Slip Past Monks 4-2

STANDISH, Maine -- Senior Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) stroked a
one-out single to drive in the go ahead run in the top of the eighth inning and
the University of Southern Maine Huskies went on to defeat the St. Joseph’s
College Monks 4-2 in a non-conference game Wednesday night at Mahaney Diamond.
The win was the sixth straight, and 17th in the last 18 games, for the
Huskies who improved to 27-9-1 overall. St. Joseph’s concluded its 2004 season
15-23.
With the game tied 2-2 going into the eighth, freshman Joe Ganley (Keene,
N.H.) led off the inning with a single, and advance to second on a passed ball.

Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) that loaded the bases, Loveless, who had been
inserted into the game in the sixth inning, singled home Ganley with what proved
to be the decisive run. Vardaro added an insurance run later when he scored on
a two-out wild pitch.
The Monks took a 1-0 lead in first on a double by freshman Mark Clapp (Blue
Hill, Maine) and a two-out RBI single from senior Matt Prunier (Oxford, Mass.).
USM tied the game in the second on a solo home run from sophomore Tip
Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine).

loaded walk to Clapp, but USM senior starter Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine)
escaped further damage.

the fourth inning with a solo homer, his 13th of the season. Brewer has homered
in the each of the last four games.

southpaw Sam Handy (South Burlington, Vt.). Handy came into the game in the
sixth, and after giving up a walk and single, he helped himself by getting the
lead runner trying to steal third before setting down the last 11 batters,
including eight by strikeout.
Junior Greg Kimball (Lebanon, Maine), who came on in relief for St.
Joseph’s in the fourth inning, was tagged for the loss.

Southern Maine Sweeps Husson, 18-5 and 17-5

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies pounded out 43
hits and scored 35 runs Sunday afternoon to sweep a non-conference doubleheader
from the Husson College Braves by scores of 18-5 and 17-5.
The two wins improves the Huskies' overall record to 25-9-1 heading into the
final week of the regular season. Husson dropped to 22-13.
Southern Maine had a season-high 20 hits in the first game, then went three
better in the nightcap with 23 safeties. Senior Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine)
was the story of the second game, hitting for the cycle in the first five innings.
In the opener, the Huskies took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run
single by junior Greg Stacy (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy). The Braves came
back in the second to tie the game on an RBI single by junior Steve Estes (Bethel,
Maine) and a wild pitch that allowed sophomore Chris McInnis (Winslow, Maine) to
score.
After the Braves took a 3-2 lead in the third on an RBI groundout by junior
Kyle Mathieu (Winslow, Maine), the Huskies' bats exploded for four runs in the
bottom of the third and five in the fifth to give the home team an 11-3 advantage.
Stacy led off the USM third with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Freshman Peter St. Onge (Biddeford, Maine) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly
that was dropped for an error in the outfield. Freshman Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.)
followed with an RBI single, and rookie Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) doubled home
Ganley.
The USM fifth was highlighted by back-to-back home runs by Stacy, a three-run
job down the left field line, and senior Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine), who
hit a mammoth blast to left center.
Stacy and senior Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) paced the Huskies' 20-hit
attack with three hits each. Stacy also drove in five runs. Freshman right-
hander Josh Armandi (Jay, Maine) went the first seven innings to pick up his third
win of the season.
For Husson, senior Jason Folsom (Millinocket, Maine), Mathieu and McInnins
each had two singles. Starting pitcher Mike Cowperthwaite (Prospect Harbor,
Maine) took the loss.
In the nightcap, the Huskies scored four times in the first and six runs in
the second to take a commanding 10-0 lead. Lemieux ignited the first-inning
outburst with an RBI triple, and Brewer hit his second home run of the day two in
the inning.
Marshall brought home the first two runs of the second with a single, and
Lemieux followed with a two-run double. Sophomore Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine)
plated the fifth run with a bases loaded walk and the next batter, freshman Ryan
Bourque (Sanford, Maine), was hit be a pitch to force in the sixth run.
Lemieux hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, and finished off his bid
for the cycle with a flair into right center for a single in the fifth.
Seven different USM players had at least two or more hits. Lemieux led the
RBI parade with four, and ten other players collected at least one RBI.
Sophomore left-handed starter Sam Handy (South Burlington, Vt.) went the
first five innings to get his fourth win of the season.

                       Huskies Collar Terriers, 10-2; 19-12

GORHAM, Maine - The University of Southern Maine Huskies erupted for 25
hits, including 12 for extra bases, and 29 runs en route to a pair of one-sided,
seven-inning triumphs over the Thomas College Terriers.
Senior Brandon Brewer (Cumberland, Maine) ripped a three-run homer to pace
the Huskies to a 10-2 win in the opener, while senior Brian Marshall (Danvers,
Mass.) delivered a pair of home runs and drove in five runs as the Huskies

Thomas slipped to 10-22.
After the Terriers scored a single run to pull within 5-2 in the top of the
sixth, the Huskies compiled a two-out, five-run rally in the bottom of the frame
to account for the 10-2 final of game one. Freshman Joe Ganley (Keene, N.H.) led
off the at bat with a single, but the next two Huskies were retired. Senior Adam
Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) delivered a two-out single and junior Greg Stacy
(Denmark, Maine) followed with a single to drive in Ganley. Freshman Ryan Bourque

In the nightcap, Southern Maine jumped to a 5-0 lead through two innings of
play, but Thomas rallied to pull within 7-6 in the top of the fourth. Southern
Maine put the game away by sending eight runners across the plate in the bottom of
the fourth and adding four more in the fifth to build a commanding 19-6 advantage.
Thomas added four in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Freshman Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.) led off the Huskies' half of the first
by reaching on an error, and Marshall followed with a two-run blast to leftfield
to give the Huskies an early lead. Lemieux added a double and later scored on
Bourque's ground out to second.
After Thomas trimmed the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the third, Stacy and
Bourque led off the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back triples. Brewer
hit a deep sacrifice fly to leftfield, driving in Bourque.
In the eight-run, fourth inning, eight consecutive batters scored for the
Huskies. Stacy began the onslaught with a walk and scored on Bourque's triple.

Southern Maine Sweeps Rhode Island College

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior right-handed pitcher Marc Cahill (Lynn, Mass.)
pitched a four-hit shutout in the opening game and senior Brandon Brewer
(Cumberland, Maine) belted two home runs in the second as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies swept a Little East Conference doubleheader from the Rhode
Island College Anchormen, 1-0 and 6-0, Saturday afternoon.
The two wins improved the Huskies' overall record to 7-6-1 while the
Anchormen slip to 7-6 overall. These were the opening conference games for both
teams. The doubleheader was scheduled to be played at Rhode Island College, but
was moved to Southern Maine because of unplayable field conditions in Providence.
Cahill and RIC junior right-hander Jim Milano (Johnston, R.I.) hooked up in a
great pitchers dual in the opening game. The only run came in the top of the
sixth when Brewer grounded out to shortstop with runners at the corners. Freshman
Nick Vardaro (Norwood, Mass.), who lead off the inning with a walk, scored on the
play.
That was all Cahill would need as he held the Anchormen to just four hits and
two walks while striking out seven for his first win of the season against two
losses. Milano, who went 7.2 innings, gave up five hits and five walks before
giving way to junior Brandon White (Foster, R.I.) in the eighth inning.

an RBI double by senior Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) and a two-run homer to
center field by Brewer.
In the third, Vardaro drew a leadoff walk, and advanced to third on
Marshall's double down the left field line. After a foul out to first base,
Brewer blasted his third home run of the season to left-center field to make it
6-0.
Senior left-hander Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine) had an outstanding
effort on the hill for the Huskies. He was perfect through the first four innings
before loading the bases in the fifth on three singles. He got out of that jam on
a fly out and the runner from third being thrown out at home on a rundown.
Thibodeau allowed five singles over eight innings and did no walk a batter.
He fanned five. Sophomore Tip Fairchild (Monmouth, Maine) came on to pitch a one-
two-three ninth inning.
Junior Matt Brannon (Cranston, R.I.), who went five innings for the
Anchormen, took the loss. Junior Jeremy Edwards (Exeter, R.I.) hurled four
innings of three-hit shutout relief.
