USM Standouts Ryan Adams and Andy Lang Earn ECAC Baseball Honors

GORHAM, Maine Junior second baseman Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.)
received first team ECAC Division III New England All-Star honors, while senior
right-handed pitcher Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) was selected to the second
team.
Lang, who also received first team All-Little East Conference accolades,
finished the campaign with a .363 batting average, collecting 65 hits, including
14 doubles, three triples and a career-high and five home runs, in 162 at bats.
He scored a team-leading 42 runs and drove in 34 for 76 runs produced. He also
stole a team co-high 13 bases, and committed just seven errors in 239 fielding
chances for a .971 fielding percentage.
Adams, who earned LEC Pitcher of the Year and first team All-Conference
honors, posted a 6-2 record with two shutouts and an NCAA-leading 0.83 earned
run average, which is the second-lowest single-season ERA in school history.
Following off-season arm surgery, Adams toiled a team-leading 75.2 innings
on the hill, and surrendered 60 hits, while walking 13 and fanning 36. He earned
ECAC Player of the Week recognition earlier this year after posting a complete-
game, 4-0 win over defending national champion St. Thomas.
The duo helped guide Southern Maine to an overall mark of 28-15-1. The
Huskies finished second in the LEC regular-season with a 10-3-1 record. In the
conference tournament, the Huskies suffered a first-round loss to Western
Connecticut, but rallied to win three straight games, eliminating eventual
national champion Eastern Connecticut in the process, before bowing to Western
Connecticut in the deciding game.

Ryan Adams Named LEC Pitcher of the Year
Four Huskies Named to All-Little East Teams

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine)
of the University of Southern Maine Huskies baseball team has been named the
Pitcher of the Year in the Little East Conference. The four individual awards
and All-Little East first and second teams were announced Monday by LEC
commissioner, William M. Moore, following a vote by the conference's eight head
coaches.
Joining Adams on the All-Little East Conference first team from USM were
junior second baseman Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) and junior outfielder Tyler
Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.). Named to the second team was sophomore third
baseman Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.). This is the second time that Adams has
been named to the All-LEC first team, and the third consecutive year for
Delorme. Lang was named to the first team in 2000 and the second team last
year. This is Marshall's first all-conference citation.
Adams, who was the LEC Pitcher of the Week once this season, is the first
USM hurler to capture the top pitching award in the six-history of baseball as a
conference sport. The 6-foot-3 right-hander compiled a 6-2 overall record with
two shutouts and a microscopic 0.83 ERA. He returned from off-season arm
surgery to work a team-leading 75.2 innings, allowing 60 hits, 17 walks and
seven earned runs while striking out 36. His 0.83 ERA is the second lowest
single-season ERA in school history, and ranks him among the Division III
leaders in the nation.
	Delorme batted a team-high .389 (63 for 162) with nine doubles, one
triple, five home runs, 23 walks and a team-leading 36 RBI. He shared the team
lead with Lang in stolen bases (13) and topped the club with his .464 on-base
percentage.
Lang finished the season with a .363 batting average (65 of 179) with 42
runs scored, 14 doubles, three triples, a career-high seven homers, 13 stolen
bases and 34 RBI. He led the Huskies in at bats, runs scored, doubles and
triples, and shared the lead in stolen bases.
Marshall ended his sophomore campaign hitting .339 (59 for 174) with nine
doubles, one triple, three homers, 12 stolen bases and 34 RBI.
Other individual awards went to senior 1B John Kubachka of Eastern
Connecticut as the Player of the Year, Keene State College freshman pitcher Jim
Slack got the nod as the Rookie of the Year, and head coach John Susi of Western
Connecticut State University was tabbed by his peers as the Coach of the Year.

Little East Conference Tournament - Championship Game
Colonials Edge Huskies 5-4 to Win First Little East Title

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Senior DH Chris Miller (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.)
delivered a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie and give
the third-seeded Western Connecticut State University Colonials a 5-4 victory
over the second-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon
in the championship game of the Sixth Annual Little East Conference Championship
Tournament played at the ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
The title is the first for the Colonials who did not even make last year's
tournament field. It also sends Western Connecticut into next weekend's NCAA
regional tournament for the first time in school history. Western Connecticut
beat sixth-seeded Plymouth State College 4-2 in a first round playoff game to
make the four-team, double-elimination finals. In the finals, the Colonials
knocked off Southern Maine 6-4 and Keene State College 7-6 to advance to the
championship round.
In the championship round, Southern Maine extended the tournament with a
6-5 win in 10 innings. The Huskies, trying to become the first team to win the
title after dropping its opening game, needed to beat the Colonials twice on
Saturday. The loss brings to an end the Huskies run of 15 consecutive NCAA
tournament appearances (1987-2001).
Miller, who tied the game in the sixth inning with a solo home run to
left, drove in junior OF Chris Sundano (New Fairfield, Conn.) who led off the
seventh with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a
fly out. After a walk to senior C Bob Nardi (Winsted, Conn.), Miller lined a
single to right field to score Sundano with what proved to be the winning run.
The Colonials jumped on USM sophomore starter Adam Lemieux (Cumberland,
Maine) for three runs in the first inning on three singles, two walks and an
outfield error. Nardi drove in the first run with a single and sophomore Jon
Lynch (Glastonbury, Conn.) plated two with a two-out single.
Southern Maine got two runs back in the third on a double steal and RBI
single by sophomore 3B Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.). The Huskies took a 4-3
lead in the fourth on an RBI triple by senior C Peter L'Italien (Salem, Mass.)
and an RBI single by senior OF Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.).
Junior RHP Brian Stumpf (Winsted, Conn.), the third of four Western
Connecticut pitchers, picked up his second win of the season with three innings
of two-hit shutout relief work. Junior LHP Carl Rivers (Morris, Conn.), who was
named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, pitched a scoreless ninth inning
to record his fifth save of the season. Rivers had a complete-game victory over
Southern Maine on Thursday and two saves in the tournament.
L'Italien led the Huskies' 11-hit offense, going 3 for 4 with a triple and
a double. Junior OF Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.), junior 1B Derek Meader
(Portland, Maine) and freshman DH Greg Stacy (Denmark, Maine) each had a pair of
hits. Sophomore RHP Christian Boileau (Lewiston, Maine), who got the win in the
first game, took the loss in relief.

Southern Maine Defeats Wheaton 10-3

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore left-handed pitcher Jason Thibodeau (Old
Town, Maine) hurled 5.1 innings of scoreless three-hit relief and sophomore OF
Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) drove in four runs to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 10-3 win over the Wheaton College Lyons in a non-
conference game Sunday afternoon at Towers Field.
The win improved the Huskies overall record to 13-8, and avenged a 9-6
loss at the hands of the Lyons nine days ago. The loss snapped the Lyons eight-
game unbeaten streak (7-0-1) and leaves them with a 16-4-1 overall record.
Wheaton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a one-out triple by junior 3B Scott
Beattie (Springvale, Maine) and a sacrifice fly by senior OF Chris Denorfia
(Southington, Conn.).
USM responded in the second with a two-run single by Lemieux, and added a
single tally in the third on three singles and a double play grounder.
Denorfia sparked a two-run Wheaton rally in the fourth, leading off with a
walk. Senior DH Damon Whalen (Pelham, N.H.) followed with an RBI double,
advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by sophomore C Joe
DeMartino (West Barnstable, Mass.) to tie the score.
Freshman Greg Stacy (Denmark, Maine) scored the go ahead run for USM in
the sixth on an infield error.
Lemieux drove in his third run of the day when he was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded in the seventh. Two batters later, senior C Peter L'Italien
(Salem, mass.) drew a bases loaded walk to force in a second run, and sophomore
OF Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine) followed with a two-run single.
Thibodeau, who came on in the fourth in relief of starter Neil Hutchings
(Cumberland, Maine), allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out
five to collect his second win of the season.
Wheaton junior starter Trevor Alexander (Wilton, Maine) went six innings
and took the loss.
Junior Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) paced the Huskies' 17-hit attack,
going 4 for 4 with a double. Junior OF Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.),
sophomore Darrin Daniels (Millinocket, Maine), senior Craig Gureckis (Nashua,
N.H.), Stacy and Lemieux each had two hits.
Southern Maine travels to Bowdoin College on Tuesday for its next game.
Wheaton travels to Brandeis University, also on Tuesday.

Huskies, Colonials Split Doubleheader

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior right-hander Pat Liddy (Wilton, Maine) tossed a
complete game three-hitter and struck out nine as the University of Southern
Maine Huskies came from behind to beat the Western Connecticut State Colonials,
5-1, in the second game of their Little East Conference baseball doubleheader at
Towers Field Saturday afternoon.
In the first game, Western Connecticut junior left-hander Carl Rivers
(Morris, Conn.) got the better of USM senior right-hander Ryan Adams (Sanford,
Maine) in a pitchers duel, 2-1. Rivers gave up eight singles, walked one and
struck out six while Adams surrendered just five hits and one walk and struck
out five. Both Western Connecticut runs were unearned.
The split leaves the Huskies with a 12-8 overall record heading into
Sunday's non-conference home game with Wheaton College. Western Connecticut is
7-9 overall. Both clubs are 3-1 in the Little East Conference.
Western Connecticut staked Rivers to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of
game one when senior C Bob Nardi (Winsted, Conn.) reached on an infield error.
After Adams struck out the next two hitters, sophomore OF Ian Reilly (Bronx,
N.Y.) delivered a sun-aided triple to right center field plating Nardi. Reilly
came in on sophomore 1B Anthony Puccio (Bayshore, N.Y.) RBI single.
USM came back in the fifth to cut the deficit in half when sophomore 3B
Darrin Daniels (Millinocket, Maine) scored from third during a double steal
attempt that ended the inning. Rivers would allow only an infield single and a
walk over the final four innings.
In the nightcap, the Colonials picked up a gift run in the first inning as
junior OF Jay Sharkey (Waterbury, Conn.) doubled with one out, then came home as
the Huskies made errors on consecutive ground balls.
The Huskies finally broke through against Western Connecticut starter John
Parise (North Haven, Conn.) in the fifth. Parise did not allowed a hit until
Daniels, pinch hitting, tied the game with an RBI single to left. After USM
loaded the bases on a single and an infield error, junior OF Tyler Delorme
(Enosburg Falls, Vt.) drove in two runs with a single to left. Senior 1B Craig
Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) greeted reliever Brad Percival (Farmington, Conn.) with
an RBI double down the right field line to make it 4-1.
Sophomore 3B Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) drove in an insurance run in
the seventh for the final tally.

Huskies Rout Chargers, 24-1, in Home Opener

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore right-hander Travis Ferrante (Portland,
Maine) scattered three hits and allowed just one run over seven innings to pick
up his first win of the season as the University of Southern Maine Huskies
pounded out 18 hits and scored a season-high 24 runs to rout the visiting Colby-
Sawyer College Chargers, 24-1, in the Huskies home-opener Friday afternoon at a
frigid Towers Field.
The non-conference win improved the Huskies overall mark to 11-7 heading
into a Saturday afternoon Little East Conference doubleheader against Western
Connecticut State University. Colby-Sawyer dropped to 3-13 overall. The
Chargers will play their home opener Saturday, hosting New England College for a
doubleheader.
Ferrante did not surrender a hit through the first five innings, allowing
only three base runners (two hit batters and one reaching on an error) until
sophomore Jon Clay (Hopkinton, N.H.) reached him for an opposite field single
with two out in the sixth inning. The Chargers nicked Ferrante for a run in the
seventh on an infield single and an RBI double by sophomore Rian McCarthy
(Middletown, R.I.).
USM batted around in the second, third and fifth innings to turn the game
into a rout. Junior OF Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.), sophomore 3B Brian
Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman DH Greg Stacy (Denmark, Maine) led the
assault with three hits apiece. Delorme, Stacy, sophomore OF Colin Loveless
(South Paris, Maine) and sophomore Chris Waymon (Wareham, Mass.) all had three
RBI. Waymon had the only home run in the game.

Bridgewater State Sweeps Southern Maine

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State College Bears sophomore right-
hander Peter Starr (Leominster, Mass.) and freshman right-hander Scott Favreau
(Tewksbury, Mass.) combined to limit the University of Southern Maine Huskies to
just four singles over two games as the Bears swept the visiting Huskies, 4-0
and 5-0, in a non-conference baseball doubleheader Wednesday. The second game
was called after five innings due to darkness.
Starr was brilliant in the first game, taking a no-hitter into the seventh
inning before junior Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) broke up the bid with a
bloop single to left. It was the only blemish against Starr who walked none and
struck out seven for his second win of the season.
Sophomore catcher Anthony Taormina (Plymouth, Mass.) gave Starr all the
support he would need with a solo home run in the third inning off sophomore
left-hander Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine). The Bears added three insurance
runs in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore Jason Arraiol (Taunton, Mass.),
an infield error and an RBI double by junior Mike Foster (Whitman, Mass.).
In the nightcap, Favreau stranded nine Huskies over the first four innings
to keep the game scoreless before the Bears bunched their six hits into a five-
run inning. Favreau gave up just three singles, but walked seven and was
constantly pitching out of trouble.
With darkness impending, the Bears got on the board in the fourth when,
with one out, junior Jeremy Winters (Norton, Mass.) doubled and scored on a
single by Foster. Junior Dan Webber (Norton, Mass.) followed with another
double to score Foster. After a walk, sophomore Christian Boileau (Lewiston,
Maine) replaced freshman Eric Kent (Newburyport, Mass.) on the hill for the
Huskies.
Boileau should have been out of the inning, getting an infield ground out,
but Taormina's foul pop was dropped for an error, keeping the inning alive.
Taormina then singled to score Webber. Sophomore Jim Sullivan (Tewksbury,
Mass.) and junior Derek Favreau (Tewksbury, Mass.) followed with RBI singles.
Southern Maine, now 10-7, will begin a four-game homestand on Friday,
playing Colby-Sawyer College at 3:00 p.m., followed by a Little East Conference
doubleheader with Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.)
and a single non-conference game against Wheaton College on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Southern Maine Huskies pounded out
35 hits and scored 27 runs to sweep a doubleheader from the Rhode Island College
Anchormen, 20-0 and 7-2, Saturday in the opening weekend of play in the Little

USM snapped a two-game losing skid with the wins and improved to 10-5
overall. Rhode Island College has lost three straight and falls to 2-12
overall.
In the opening game, senior right-handed pitcher Ryan Adams (Sanford,
Maine) combined with junior southpaw Neil Hutchings (Cumberland, Maine) to spin
a three-hit shutout. Adams worked the first seven innings, allowing three hits
and no walks while striking out four to pick up his third win of the season.
Hutchings gave up just one walk and struck out one in two innings of work.
Sophomore Jeff Steere (Chepachet, R.I.) took the loss after allowing 12 hits and
14 runs in four innings of work.
USM put the game out of reach early with six runs in the second inning and
eight more in the fourth. Senior 1B Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) opened the
flood gates in the second with an RBI single. USM also benefited from three
Anchormen errors. The big blows in the fourth were a two-run double by
sophomore OF Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) and a two-run single by sophomore
SS Pat McCarthy (Medford, Mass.).
McCarthy finished the game 4-for-6 with two RBI while Lemieux was 3-for-5
with four RBI. Five other USM players also had a pair of safeties.
In the nightcap, which was called after seven innings due to darkness, the
Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings to give junior right-
hander Pat Liddy (Wilton, Maine) a cushion. Gureckis forced home a run in the
first with a bases loaded walk. In the Huskies' four-run fourth, seven straight
batters reached base to account for the runs.
Liddy went the distance, allowing six hits and two walks while fanning
six. Freshman Jim Milano (Johnston, R.I.) worked the first three innings for
RIC and took the loss.
Junior 2B Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) paced the attack in the second
game, going 3-for-5 while junior OF Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) was

damage as the Lyons' junior hurler, Justin Rioux (Nashua, N.H.), got the final
out of the inning on a strikeout.
Wheaton took a 4-0 lead in the third inning against USM starter and losing
pitcher Adam Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine). Sophomore John Ablondi (Westford,
Mass.) had a two-run homer, his first of the season, to highlight the inning.
The Huskies came right back in the fourth on a three-run homer by senior
Craig Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.). After the Lyons got a single tally in the bottom
half of the fourth, junior Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) tied the game in the
fifth with a two-run homer.
Freshman pitcher J.D. Stone (North Adams, Mass.) picked up the win with
2.1 innings of relief work. Senior Mike Spavento (Milton, Mass.) faced three

USM, Wisconsin-Whitewater Split Two

FT. MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies and
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks split a doubleheader between the two
nationally-ranked clubs Wednesday at Tarry Park in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Southern Maine, ranked eighth in this week's ABCA poll, took the opening
game 6-3 behind the pitching of sophomore left-hander Jason Thibodeau (Old Town,
Maine) and the hitting of junior infielder Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.).
The Warhawks, ranked 17th in the top 30 poll, came back to take the second
game by scoring four runs in the fifth and five more in the seventh for a 9-1
win.
Thibodeau scattered five hits and two walks while fanning two to even his
record at 1-1. The lefty allowed a single run in the third and two in the
fourth, then retired the final nine batters he faced.
Lang ignited the Huskies' two-run second inning by getting hit by a pitch
leading off, and he later scored on sophomore Pat McCarthy's (Medford, Mass.)
sacrifice fly. The second run came home on sophomore Colin Loveless' (South
Paris, Maine) RBI single.
After Whitewater tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth, Lang delivered what
proved to be the winning runs in the fifth with a two-run triple. Freshman Greg
Stacy (Denmark, Maine) drove in an insurance run in the seventh with a single.
Southern Maine looked for a sweep of the doubleheader, taking a 1-0 lead
in the nightcap on junior Tyler Delorme's (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) RBI fielder's
choice in the third inning.
Junior Rob Misora Palatine, Ill.) tied the game in the fifth for the
Warhawks with an RBI triple. Classmate Travis Van Zile (Reedsburg, Wis.)
followed with a two-run homer down the left field line. Sophomore Brady Endl
(Jefferson, Wis.) pushed across the fourth run when he was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded.
Whitewater put the game away with five runs against three USM relievers in

USM, St. Thomas Split Doubleheader

FT. MYER, Fla. -- University of Southern Maine senior right-handed
pitcher Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine) picked up his first career shutout Tuesday
afternoon, hurling a four-hitter against the University of St. Thomas Tommies,
the defending NCAA Division III champion, in the first game of a doubleheader at
Tarry Park in Ft. Myers, Fla.
The Tommies, ranked third in the latest ABCA Division III poll, came back
in the second game to take advantage of two USM errors to score six unearned
runs in the final two innings to take an 8-5 win. The doubleheader split left
both teams with 7-3 records.
Adams gave up just four singles and four walks while striking out three
for the complete game win. He gave up a pair of two-out singles in the third
and got out his only jam in the fourth with the help of a double play. He did
not allow a hit after the fourth inning.
Junior OF Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) gave Adams all the support
he would need with an RBI single in the third. USM added three more runs in the
fourth on RBI singles by junior Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) and sophomore Pat
McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Adam Lemieux
(Cumberland, Maine).
In the second game, St. Thomas junior Casey Garven (Bloomington, Minn.)
and Delorme traded first inning solo home runs. USM grabbed a 2-1 lead in the
second inning when sophomore Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) came home on a
balk.
St. Thomas tied the game in the fifth when freshman Heath Henderson
(Rochester, Minn.) hit a solo homer off USM starter and tough-luck loser Pat
Liddy (Wilton, Maine). Liddy allowed only two hits over 5.2 innings.
The Tommies grabbed the lead for good in the sixth when junior Tom
Carroll's (Sioux City, Iowa) two-out fly ball was misplayed for an error,
allowing two runs to score. Freshman Eric Johnson (Cambridge, Minn.) later
stroked a two-run triple to make it 6-2.
St. Thomas added two more unearned runs in the seventh to offset a three-
run homer by Delorme in the bottom half of the inning to account for the final
score.
USM concludes its 12-game Florida trip Wednesday with a doubleheader
against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater at Tarry Park.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies pulled out
a pair of come-from-behind victories over the Concordia University (Moorhead,
Minn.) Cobbers Monday afternoon to extend their record to 6-2.
In the opening game, Concordia was one out away from victory, nursing a
2-1 lead when junior Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.) singled and sophomore Adam
Lemieux (Cumberland, Maine) doubled him in to tie the game. Two innings later,
Lang doubled with one out and Lemieux followed with a two-run homer to give USM
the lead.
Sophomore Christian Boileau (Lewiston, Maine), who pitched 2.2 innings of
one-hit relief, picked up his first win of the season. USM also got 6.1 solid
innings from sophomore starter Travis Ferrante (Portland, Maine). Ferrante
allowed just six hits, two runs, and walked no one while fanning one in his
first start of the season.
Junior Tyler Delorme (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) accounted for the other USM run
with a solo home run, his third of the season, leading off the fourth inning.

keyed by a three-run homer by DH Ryan Hebrink (Sacred Heart, Minn.).
USM got on the board with two in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by
Delorme and freshman Greg Stacy (Denmark, Maine). A four-run fourth inning,
highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass./
4-for-4, 4 RBI) pulled the Huskies within one.
Southern Maine tied the game in the fifth on an RBI single by sophomore
Pat McCarthy (Medford, Mass.), and took the lead on Lemieux's RBI double.
Marshall added a two-run single to make it 10-7. Sophomore Colin Loveless
(South Paris, Maine) added an insurance run in the sixth with an RBI double.
Senior left-hander Justin Andrews (Nashua, N.H.) picked up the win with
four effective innings of relief work, and Boileau notched his third save of the
season by stranding the potential tying and go ahead runs on base.
Hebrink finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI while junior catcher Ben
Kvidt (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) was 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI. Kvidt hit
a two-out, two-run homer in the seventh inning to ignite a rally that fell a run

USM, Trinity Split Doubleheader

FT. MYERS, FLA. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies and Trinity
College Bantams split a doubleheader Saturday in Ft. Myers, Fla., with the
Huskies taking the opener 13-1 while the Bantams turned the tables in the second
game for an 18-1 win.
In the first game, juniors Derek Meader (Portland, Maine) and Andy Lang
(New Bedford, Mass.) each had three hits and a pair of RBI to pace a 14-hit
Husky assault on two Trinity pitchers. USM sophomore pitchers Adam Lemieux
(Cumberland, Maine) and Pat McDonough (Windham, Maine) combined to hold the
Bantams to four singles in the seven-inning contest.
The Huskies grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first on an errant pickoff throw, a
sacrifice fly, Lang's RBI triple and an RBI double by freshman Chris Waymon
(Wareham, Mass.). USM added two more in the third to make it 6-1 on an RBI
single by sophomore Brian Marshall (Danvers, Mass.) and a double steal. The
game turned into a rout when the Huskies scored twice in the sixth and five
times in the seventh (and final) inning.
The second game was just the opposite as Trinity pounded four USM hurlers
for 20 hits and 18 runs over the final five innings to salvage a split. Seniors
Greg Spanos (Auburn, Mass.), Mark Mahoney (Newton, Mass.) and Alan Andreini
(Greenwich, Conn.) led the assault with three hits each. Eight of the nine
Trinity players in the lineup had two or more hits.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Marshall singled home
sophomore Colin Loveless (South Paris, Maine).
A balk by USM starter and losing pitcher Neil Hutchings (Cumberland,
Maine) brought in the tying run in the third. Trinity scored three in the
fourth to take the lead for good on an infield error, a wild pitch and Spanos'
RBI double. Trinity put the game away with a seven-run fifth inning to make it
11-1.
USM is now 4-2 at the midpoint of its 12-game Florida trip while Trinity

Hope College had beaten the Huskies, 6-4, earlier in the day.
Gureckis, who has five home runs in USM's first four games, hit a solo
home run in the second inning to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead, a two-run shot in

and sophomore Pat McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) had a double and a single for the
Huskies.

innings, allowing seven hits and three walks while fanning three to pick up his
first collegiate victory. Senior Justin Andrews (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore
Chris Boileau (Lewiston, Maine) each pitched an inning in relief.
Junior Joe Kehoe (Hyde Park, Mass.) had a solo homer and an RBI single to
account for two of Babson's three runs. Junior Matt Nolan (Peabody, Mass.) had
three hits for the Beavers. Junior pitcher Joe Forte (North Haven, Conn.) went
the distance to absorb his second loss of the season.
In the earlier game, junior B.J. Maas (Jenison, Mich.) hit a three-run
homer to cap off a five-run third inning as Hope handed the Huskies their first
loss. The Flying Dutchmen used three singles, a hit batsman and Maas' homer to
overcome a two-run deficit and take a 6-3 lead.
Junior Matt Widenmier (Midland, Mich.) picked up the win with 4.2 innings
of relief. He allowed just four hits and one unearned run. USM sophomore Jason
Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine) took the loss, going the distance.

Adams, a right-handed pitcher, has been a key member of the staff the past
two seasons. Last season, he was 4-1 with one save and a 3.42 ERA in 13
appearances, including seven starts, despite being hampered by an elbow injury.
He pitched 50 innings, allowing 40 hits and 31 walks while striking out 23.
During the 2000 season, Adams was the dominate reliever in the Little
East, compiling a 6-1 record with five saves and a 1.98 ERA. He allowed just 40
hits in 59 innings of work while striking out 55, and was named to the all-
conference first team.
"Adams has developed into one of the top pitchers in New England," said
Coach Flaherty. "Despite his past success, he has never been one to rest on his
accomplishmnets and he remains among the hardest working players in our
program."
An All-LEC first team pick last year, and the LEC Rookie of the Year and
second team All-LEC selection in 1999, L'Italien has been the Huskies number one
catcher the past three seasons. An outstanding defensive catcher, the right-
handed hitting L'Italien batted .250 with five doubles, one triple and 14 RBI
last season. He committed just two errors in the field and threw out 33 percent
(12 of 36) of potential base stealers.
For his career, L'Italien has a .276 batting average with 13 doubles, four
triples, eight home runs and 68 RBI. Over the last two seasons, he has thrown
out 37 of 96 (38.5%) potential base stealers.
"L'Italien has grown to epitomize Southern Maine baseball," said Coach Flaherty.
Counting his red-shirt year, he has been with the program for five years, and he
is the core of our team."
