NCAA Division III National Championship
Chapman Eliminates Southern Maine, 9-1
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. -- Junior right-hander pitcher Eric Hayden
(Spokane,
Wash.) scattered four hits and did not walk a batter over eight innings and
senior Adam Olow (San Diego, Calif.) had four hits as the Chapman University
Panthers stayed alive in the 2000 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship
Finals
by beating the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 9-1, at Fox Cities
Stadium
Saturday afternoon.
Chapman advances on in the eight-team, double-elimination
tournament to
play the loser of the University of St. Thomas-SUNY Cortland game Sunday
afternoon at noon. Southern Maine, which lost to Wartburg College Friday
night,
2-1, is eliminated and finished its season 35-14.
Hayden was on the ropes in the first inning when the Huskies had a
pair of
hits and scored their lone run. After that, he was virtually unhittable after
the first inning allowing only a single to Peter L'Italien (Salem, Mass.)
in the
fifth and a single to Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) in the sixth. He fanned two
to improve his record to 7-0.
Olow reached base all six times he batted with three singles, a
double, a
walk and he was hit by a pitch.
The Huskies, hurt by a defensive lapse in Friday's heart-breaking
first
round loss against Wartburg College, continued to play poor defense
Saturday by
committing a season-high seven errors.
The teams traded runs in the first inning as Chapman scored its run
on Pat
Stevens (Eugene, Ore.) sacrifice fly, and the Huskies countered on Pat
Toomey's
(Medford, Mass.) groundout that scored Shaun Richardson (Kennebunk, Maine) who
had doubled.
The Panthers took a 3-1 lead in the second inning by taking
advantage of
USM errors. Michael Caira (La Palma, Calif.) led off with a single and Alex
Taylor (Anahiem, Calif.) beat out a one-out bunt. Both runners advanced a
base
when USM starting pitcher Mark Russell's throw got away for an error. Tony
Serna (Garden Grove, Calif.) plated both runners with an single to left.
Chapman picked up an unearnd run without the benefit of a hit in the
fifth. Olow walked, was safe at second on an infield error, moved to third
on a
sacrifice bunt and scored on a fielder's choice.
The West Region champions picked up an unearned run in the sixth when
Brandon Maciel (Corona, Calif.) walked, stole second, went to third on Olow's
infield hit and scored on another USM error.
Caira gave the Panthers another insurance run in the eighth when he
beat
out an infield hit that scored Olow. Chapman added three more insurance
runs in
the ninth. The big blow was a two-run double by Olow.
Russell, who lasted just two innings, gave up five hits and three runs
(one earned) before being lifted. He finished the season with a 6-4 record.

NCAA Division III National Championship
USM Huskies Fall to Wartburg, 2-1
GRAND CHUTE, Wis. -- Senior center fielder Patrick Lowe (Des Moines,
Iowa) threw out the potential tying run at the plate to end the ballgame as
the
Wartburg College Knights hung on to defeat the University of Southern Maine
Huskies, 2-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Baseball
Championship
finals Friday night at Fox Cities Stadium.
The win was the eighth straight for the Knights (41-7) who move
into the
winners bracket against Alleghney College. Southern Maine (35-13) drops into
the losers bracket of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament and plays
Chapman University at 1:15 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game.
Down 2-0 heading into their final time at bat, the Huskies gave
themselves
a shot at tying the game as Jody Curcuru (Gloucester, Mass) singled up the
middle to leadoff. After a strikeout and a groundout that advanced Curcuru to
second, Andy Sebring (Worcester, Mass.) reached on an infield single.
Sophomore
Jesse Lacroix (Peabody, Mass.) pinch ran for Sebring and stole second to put
runners at secon and third.
Junior Jason Dority (Winterport, Maine) stroked his third single of
the
game to center where Lowe picked it up cleanly and fired a perfect one-hop
strike to catcher Matt Thede (Reinbeck, Iowa) who applied the tag to the
diving
Lacroix.
Overshadowed by the dramatic ending was the outstanding pitchers duel
between Wartburg's senior Shane Potratz (Cedar Falls, Iowa) and USM senior
Denny
Webber (Sabattus, Maine).
Potratz, who dodged a couple of mild threats, scattered seven
singles and
walked only two while striking out eight to pick up his 11th win of the season
against no losses.
Webber, who did not give up a hit until the fifth inning, gave up
seven
hits and one walk while fanning seven. His record drops to 7-4.
The Knights made a pair of gift runs in the fifth inning stand up
for the
win. The Huskies hurt themselves when Wartburg number nine hitter Jay
Bollman's
(Waverly, Iowa) infield pop fly was dropped for an error to load the bases.
Sophomore Jude Burger (Dubuque, Iowa) followed with a single to right to score
Vernon Birmingham (Kansas City, Iowa), who had the Knights' first hit against
Webber, and Jay Whannel (Traer, Iowa).
The Huskies threaten in the second inning when freshman Andy Lang (New
Bedford, Mass.) and sophomore Andy Sebring (Worcester, Mass.) had back-to-back
singles, but Potratz got out of trouble with a double play.
Southern Maine got a runner to third in the third as sophomore Craig
Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) was hit by a Potratz pitch, advanced to second on
sophomore Peter L'Italien's (Salem, Mass.) sacrifice bunt, and to third a
groundout. Potratz stranded him there getting a groundout to end the inning.
USM put runners at the corners in the seventh, but Potratz induced
another
ground ball that the Knights turned into their third double play of the night.
In other first round games played Friday, the University of St. Thomas
(Minn.) defeated Emory University, 8-3, SUNY-Cortland knocked off Montclair
(N.J.) State College, 5-1, and Allegheny College beat Chapman University, 4-2.
Saturday's schedule has Emory playing Montclair at 10:00 a.m.
followed by
Chapman battling Southern Maine at 1:15 in a pair of elimination games. In
the
winner's bracket, St. Thomas takes on SUNY-Cortland at 4:30 and Allegheny
plays
Wartburg in the final game of the day.

Southern Maine wasted no time jumping on Bears' senior starter Mike

sophomore Tim Hart (Carver, Mass.). Junior Jody Curcuru (Gloucester,
Mass.) put
USM up 1-0 with an RBI double.
Delorme, who hit a three-run homer in Sunday's winner's bracket game

with
an infield groundout to make it 2-0.

Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.) lined a single to center plating two more USM runs,

triple to

Toomey (Medford, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.
Southern Maine got three innings apiece from three different
pitchers.

a three-run homer to snap a 3-3 tie and the third-seeded University of
Southern
Maine Huskies hung on to defeat the top-seeded Bridgewater State College
Bears,
6-5, in the winner's bracket game of the NCAA Division III New England
Regional
Baseball Tournament at Hadlock Field Sunday afternoon.
The win was the Huskies' third straight in the tournament and moves

trip
to the 2000 NCAA Division III Baseball Championships finals in Appleton, Wis.
The loss drops the Bears into Sunday's third game against the
winner of
the Trinity College-Suffolk University elimination game.
In the fifth inning, Delorme took full advantage of an infield
error on
junior Jody Curcuru's (Gloucester, Mass.) potential inning-ending, double-play
ground ball. The red-shirt freshman hit an 0-1 fastball deep over the left
field fence for his eighth round tripper of the season to give the Huskies
a 6-3
lead.
Sophomore Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine), the second of three USM
hurlers,

pair of runs. Adams picked up his sixth win of the season working 4.1 innings
in relief. Senior Denny Webber (Sabattus, Maine) pitched a perfect ninth
inning
for his third save.
The teams traded runs in the second inning. The Bears gabbed a 1-0
lead

Huskies

single
in the bottom half of the inning.

inning. Brazie led off with a double, advanced to third on senior Ryan
Faria's
(Foxboro, Mass.) single, and scored on a wild pitch. Faria later scored on
junior Tony DeMeo's (Carver, Mass.) two-out single. The threat ended when
DeMeo
was thrown out attempting to steal.
BSC sophomore starter Shawn Cronin (Dighton, Mass.), who went the
first
five innings, took the loss. Sophomore left-hander Kevin Cadres (Hanson,
Mass.)

scored four times in the seventh inning to overcome a two-run deficit and went
on to win their first Little East Conference baseball championship by
defeating
the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 8-6, in the championship game of the
fourth annual tournament Saturday afternoon at Towers Field.
The fourth-seeded Corsairs, who had to win a first round playoff
game on
Tuesday just to get into the weekend's four-team, double-elimination
championship tournament, won three straight games to take the title and the
automatic NCAA tournament berth. UMass Dartmouth takes a 20-20 record into
the
NCAA tournament field that will be announced Monday.
Southern Maine, the top seed and defending champion, earned its way
into
the championship round against UMD by beating arch-rival Eastern Connecticut
State University, 6-5, in the first game of the day. The Huskies will wait
until Monday to hear if they will receive one of the five at-large berths
in the
42-team NCAA tournament. The Huskies are 31-12.
In the championship game, Southern Maine grabbed a 6-4 lead in the
bottom
of the sixth scoring five runs. The Huskies sent 11 batters to the plate and
received the benefit of three Corsair errors and a wild pitch in the rally.
Junior Peter L'Italien (Salem, Mass.) forced home the first run with a
bases loaded walk. Sophomore Jesse Lacroix (Peabody, Mass.) beat out a
fielder's choice to drive in the second run. Junior Jason Dority (Winterport,
Maine) lined a single into center field for an RBI, and when the ball was
misplayed for a two-base error, Lacroix came all the way around to score from
first. Dority, who ended up on third, scored on a single by sophomore Craig
Gureckis (Nashua, N.H.).
The Corsairs came right back with six straight hits to open the
seventh
inning and regain the lead. Senior Manny Santo (Warwick, R.I.) drove the
first
run with a single to right field. Singles by freshman Jason Orlando
(Gloucester, Mass.) and junior Doug Kelsch (Wareham, Mass.) loaded the
bases for
sophomore Nelson Antunes (Fall River, Mass.). Antunes perfectly placed a
bloop
single down the left line to score Santo and Orlando. Kelsch would score an
insurance run on sophomore Tim Dwyer's (Franklin, Mass.) sacrifice fly.
USM threaten with two out in the eighth inning as junior Shaun
Richardson
(Kennebunk, Maine) singled and freshman Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.)
walked.

final four outs to preserve the win for senior Greg Zackrison (Bridgewater,
Mass.).
Junior Mark Russell (Arlington, Mass.), the last of four USM
hurlers, was
tagged with the loss.
In the earlier elimination game, the Huskies built a 6-0 lead over the
first five innings, then hung on against Eastern Connecticut. USM junior left-
hander Travis Gilmore (Kingfield, Maine) kept the Warriors at bay pitching
into
the eighth inning before giving way to senior right-hander Denny Webber
(Sabattus, Maine).
Gilmore was lifted leading 6-3 after walking junior Matt Hebert
(Burlington, Conn.) with one out in the eighth. EC senior Jay Wetherell
(Milford, Conn.) greeted Webber by slamming the first pitch over the left
field
fence for his first home run of the season to make it 6-5. But Webber settled
down and retired the next five batters for his second save of the season.
Gilmore improved to 4-0 with the win.
The Huskies got a two-run opposite field homer from sophomore Andy
Sebring
(Worcester, Mass.) in the second inning, and added four runs in the fifth

Little East Conference Tournament
UMD's Hinchliffe Stifles USM Huskies on Two-Hitter, 7-1
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs
junior
right-hander Jason Hinchliffe (New Bedford, Mass.) held the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to just two singles in a complete game victory as the
fourth-seeded Corsairs stunned the top-seeded Huskies, 7-1, in the first
day of
play in the fourth annual Little East Conference Baseball Tournament at Towers
Field.
The win moves the Corsairs into Friday morning's winners bracket game
against second-seeded the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors at
9:30
a.m. Eastern Connecticut came from behind in the bottom of the ninth
inning to
score three runs to force its game with Keene State College Owls into extra
innings where the Warriors won the game in the 11th inning on freshman Morgan
Thompson's fielder choice.
Southern Maine, which had its seven-game win streak snapped, will
play in
the loser's bracket game against Keene State at 12:30. The winner of the USM-
Keene State game will play the loser of the Eastern Connecticut-UMass
Dartmouth
game at 3:30. The winner of Friday's first game moves into Saturday's
championship round.
The Corsairs gave Hinchliffe all the runs he would need in the first
inning as junior Guy Furtado (Dartmouth, Mass.) reached on an infield error.
Junior Brian Ronayne (Bridgewater, Mass.), who gained a second life when his
foul pop was not caught for another USM error, smacked a one-out, two-run
homer
over the right field fence. The round tripper was Ronayne's 14th of the
season.
Hinchliffe struggled in the first inning loading the bases with no
outs on
a pair of walks and a flare single to right field by junior Jody Curcuru
(Gloucester, Mass.), but he got out the inning allowing only one run on a
sacrifice fly by freshman Andy Lang (New Bedford, Mass.).
The 6-foot-3 Hinchliffe settled down after the first inning and
allowed
only two base runners on an infield error in the third and a walk in the fifth
until Lang singled to lead off the seventh. He retired the final seven
batters
to end the game.
The Corsairs made it 3-1 with a single run in the fourth inning on
sophomore Mike Rahme's (East Providence, R.I.) solo homer to left. It was his
eighth round tripper of the season.
UMD added four big runs in the eighth against tough-luck loser Denny
Webber (Sabattus, Maine). Ronayne got things started with a one-out double.
Freshman Jason Orlando (Gloucester, Mass.) plated Ronayne with a single to
right, and took second on the throw to the plate. After an intentional
walk to
Rahme, junior Eric Taylor (New Bedford, Mass.) smashed a triple to right
center
field to score both runners. Taylor came in on senior Manny Santo's (Warwick,
R.I.) sacrifice fly.
Hinchliffe finished his masterpiece allowing just the two hits and
five
walks while striking out nine. Webber went eight innings allowing eight hits
and two walks, both intentional, while striking out two. Both are 6-3 on the
season.

McKenna, Toomey, Webber Named USM Baseball Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Shaun McKenna (Bath, Maine) and Denny
Webber
(Sabattus, Maine) along with junior Pat Toomey (Medford, Mass.) have been
named
captains of the 2000 University of Southern Maine baseball team. Veteran head
coach Ed Flaherty made the announcement prior to the team departing for its
annual Florida spring trip.

season with a 410-169-1 career record. "Webber and McKenna have been on a
national championship team (1997) and know what it takes to win. Toomey
does a
lot of things right and will be our leader in the infield."
Webber compiled a 6-4 record with a 3.28 ERA last season after an 0-3
start. He was named to the all-tournament teams at both the Little East
Conference and NCAA Regional tournaments. Over his first three seasons,

After the Huskies return to Gorham next Tuesday (March 28), they will
depart on Thursday (March 30) for a five-game, four-day road trip to play
