Elfring, SID Wednesday, October 27, 1999 Record 81 Earn USM Scholar-Athlete Award GORHAM, Maine -- For the fourth consecutive year, a record number of University of Southern Maine student-athletes, cheerleaders and student athletic trainers have earned the Department of Athletics' prestigous William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete award. During the 1998-99 academic year, 81 individuals met the criteria to receive the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award. The criteria includes each individual compiling a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and that they utilized a season of eligibility or were members of a varsity team. The Wise Award recepients will be honored at a reception November 7 at the Kenneth Brooks Student Center on the Gorham campus. The 81 winners represent more than 22% of the students that comprised the varsity athletic teams, cheerleaders and student athletic trainers in 1998-99. The previous record for Wise Award winners was 76 for the 1997-98 academic year. Eighteen student-athletes, including Alyssa Bergeron (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Kelly Busby (indoor and outdoor track), Karen Dearborn (field hockey and ice hockey), Miranda Derenberger (soccer, indoor and outdoor track), Sarah Drury (athletic training and soccer), Kevin Faria (indoor and outdoor track), Stephanie Forrest (soccer and indoor track), Hollie Harnish (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Ali Hathaway (soccer and basketball), Paul Johnson (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Nick Joy (indoor and outdoor track), Anna Kijas (cross country and indoor track), Marcy Muller (indoor and outdoor track), Julie Plant (basketball and softball), Rebecca Reed (field hockey and indoor track), Jason Tuck (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Derek Veilleux (cross country, indoor and outdoor track) and Tina West (soccer and softball) were honored as multi-sport student-athletes. Among this year's record setting number of award winners were 29 recipients who earned their second Wise award. Twelve student-athletes, including Michelle Cloutier (softball), Alison Drury (field hockey), Sarah Drury (soccer/athlete training), Kein Faria (men's track), Jay Harper (tennis), Ali Hathaway (soccer/basketball), Tracy Libby (basketball), Chip Pate (ice hockey), Julie Plant (basketball/softball), Valerie Pollard (cheering), Rebecca Reed (field hockey/indoor track) and Derek Veilleux (cross country/track), increased the number of student-athletes to earn three awards to 40. Michael Ellerbrook (basketball) and Erald Kilkenny (baseball) became the ninth and tenth persons to earn four awards since the award was established.
