                   RECORD 125 EARN USM SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD

	GORHAM, Maine  --  For the seventh consecutive year, a record number of 
student-athletes and cheering squad members at the University of Southern Maine 
have earned the Department of Athletics William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award. 
	During the 2001-02 academic year, 125 individuals met the criteria to 
receive the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award.  The criteria includes each individual 
compiling a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring 
semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and that they utilized a 
season of eligibility as a member of a varsity team or the cheering squad.
	The Wise Award recipients were honored at a reception and dinner October 6 
at the Kenneth Brooks Student Center on USM's Gorham campus.  The 125 winners 
represent 33.2% of the 376 individuals that comprised the 24 varsity athletic 
and cheering squads in 2001-02. The previous record for Wise Award winners was 
113 during the 2000-2001 academic year.
	Four student-athletes - Kelly Busby (Biddeford, Maine; indoor and outdoor 
track), Marcy Muller (Farmington, Maine; volleyball), Jason Tuck (Bangor, Maine; 
indoor and outdoor track), and Tina West (Gorham, Maine; soccer and softball) - 
will be honored with their fourth Wise Award.  This quartet brings the number of 
four-time Wise Award winners to 23 since the program started in 1987-88.
	A total of 18 student-athletes will collect their third Wise Award, 
including Brian Aceto (Gorham, Maine; ice hockey), Pat Caruana (Auburn, N.Y.; 
wrestling), Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine; volleyball, indoor and outdoor 
track), Sean Diette (Newport, Vt.; cross country, indoor and outdoor track), 
Jolaine Galibois-Barss (Augusta, Maine; soccer), Tara Giroux (Greene, Maine; 
field hockey), Becky Kimball (Arundel, Maine; outdoor track), Andy Lang (New 
Bedford, Mass.; baseball), Jessica Libby (Orono, Maine; basketball), Avery 
McGill (Middlebury, Vt.' Ice hockey and lacrosse), Sarah McLean (Portsmouth, 
R.I.; tennis and softball), Jill Powers (Beverly, Mass.; ice hockey), Jessica 
Short (Bennington, Vt.; cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Stephanie 
Slater (Acton, Mass.; ice hockey and lacrosse), Diane Smith (Thomaston, Conn.; 
volleyball), Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine; indoor and outdoor track), Matt 
Tarbox (Standish, Maine; basketball), and Jen Young (Middlebury, Vt.; soccer and 
lacrosse).
	Among this year's honorees are 34 student-athletes who earned their second 
Wise Award, including Erin Barry (Scarborough, Maine; cheering), Deedra 
Beveridge (Camden, Maine; field hockey, indoor track and lacrosse), Melissa 
Bouchard (Millinocket, Maine; indoor and outdoor track), Darcy Comer (South 
Berwick, Maine; lacrosse), Sarah Dolley (Oakland, Maine; field hockey, indoor 
track and lacrosse), Eric Drew (Cranston, R.I.; soccer), Tonya Eaton (Auburn, 
Maine; cheering), Melanie Fike (Manchester, Maine; volleyball and lacrosse), 
Breanne Fortiguerra (Lyman, Maine; ice hockey), Nikki Freeman (Whitefield, 
Maine; indoor and outdoor track), Heather French (Smithfield, Maine; indoor and 
outdoor track), Tasha Gerken (Buxton, Maine; volleyball), Mike Hangge 
(Ellsworth, Maine; soccer), Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine; field hockey and 
softball), Heather Hill (Pascoag, R.I.; ice hockey), Meredith Hodgin (York, 
Maine; soccer), and Darci Holland (Buckfield, Maine; field hockey and softball).
	Also picking up their second Wise Award are Tricia Kamp (West Caldwell, 
N.J.; ice hockey and lacrosse), Jason Kopp (Portland, Maine; soccer), Rachel 
Kwantz (Wiscasset, Maine; soccer), Allison Lambrecht (Norwood, Mass.; cross 
country, indoor and outdoor track), John Lauziere (Lewiston, Maine; ice hockey), 
Kati Libby (Orono, Maine; volleyball and basketball), Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, 
Maine; cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Pat McCarthy (Medford, Mass.; 
baseball), Brittany McClure (Belfast, Maine; field hockey and lacrosse), Jon 
Melanson (Portland, Maine; baseball), Pat Murray (Moncton, New Brunswick; ice 
hockey), Pat Otto (Furlong, Penn.; golf), Drew Palmer (Rothesay, New Brunswick; 
baseball), Jason St. Pierre (Bangor, Maine; basketball), Dan Trevett 
(Burlington, Mass.; lacrosse), Gabrielle Wallace (Portland, Maine; sailing) and 
Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.; cross country, indoor and outdoor track).
	There are 69 first-time winners. 
	Among the 125 award winners were 16 student-athletes who competed in all 
three seasons (fall, winter and spring), and 34 others who competed in two 
seasons.
	Since the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award program began, a total of 880 awards 
have been presented.  In addition to the 23 four-time winners, there are 63 
three-time winners, 125 two-time recipients and 330 single winners.
