Tuesday, October 3, 2000 Record 98 Earn USM Scholar-Athlete Award GORHAM, Maine -- For the fifth consecutive year, a record number of University of Southern Maine student-athletes and cheering squad members have earned the Department of Athletics' prestigious William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete award. During the 1999-2000 academic year, 98 individuals met the criteria to receive the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award. The criteria includes each individual compiling a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and that they utilized a season of eligibility as a member of a varsity team. The Wise Award recipients will be honored at a reception and dinner October 22 at the Kenneth Brooks Student Center on the Gorham campus. The 98 winners represent 27.6% of the 355 individuals that comprised the 23 varsity athletic and cheering squads in 1999-2000. The previous record for Wise Award winners was 81 during the 1998-99 academic year. Among this year's record-setting number of award winners were 18 recipients who earned their second Wise award. Those included Kelly Busby (indoor and outdoor track), Leah Cloutier (soccer), Kim Cochrane (field hockey), Jim Hopkins (soccer), Paul Johnson (cross country), Sadye Johnson (soccer), Nick Joy (indoor and outdoor track), Anna Kijas (indoor track), Kim Landeen (soccer), Marcy Muller (volleyball, indoor and outdoor track), Ian Penney (ice hockey), Jennifer Snyder (cross country and outdoor track), Jason Tuck (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Denny Webber (baseball), Melissa Weber (cross country), Tina West (soccer and softball), Samantha Whitman (soccer and ice hockey) and Jennifer Wilson (cross country). Thirteen student-athletes, including Alyssa Anderson (softball), Melissa Bard (cheering), Alyssa Bergeron (cross country & indoor track), Dan Drozdzik (ice hockey), Rachel Drury (soccer), Corey Fleming (soccer), Erica Gagnon (softball), Andy Gildart (hockey), Hollie Harnish (cross country and indoor track), Beth Hovencamp (cross country and indoor track), June LaVallee (softball), Kerry LePage (field hockey) and Penny Osborne (cross country), increased the number of student-athletes to have earned three awards to 53. The number of student-athletes to earn four awards nearly doubled as eight athletes were added to the list of four-time recipients, bringing the total to 18. Earning their fourth Wise Award were Michelle Cloutier (softball), Alison Drury (field hockey), Sarah Drury (soccer), Kevin Faria (soccer, indoor and outdoor track), Ali Hathaway (soccer and basketball), Julie Plant (basketball and softball), Rebecca Reed (field hockey and indoor track), and Derek Veilleux (cross country and indoor track). Twenty-nine student-athletes were honored as multi-sport student-athletes, including Alyssa Bergeron (cross country and indoor track), Kelly Busby (indoor and outdoor track), Heather (French) Coombs (indoor and outdoor track), Peter Corbett (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Sean Diette (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Jennifer Ditzel (cross country and indoor track), Greg Dolbec (cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Stacy Dube (volleyball and softball), Kevin Faria (soccer, indoor and outdoor track), Hollie Harnish (cross country and indoor track), Ali Hathaway (soccer and basketball), Beth Hovencamp (cross country, and indoor track), Nicholas Joy (indoor and outdoor track), and Jake Koelker (cross country, indoor and outdoor track).
