               USM Athletic Department Honors 103 Scholar-Athletes

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The Department of Athletics at the University of Southern 
Maine honored 103 student-athletes on November 14 with the William B. Wise 
Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2003-2004 academic year.  The Wise Award recipients 
were recognized at a reception and dinner at the Kenneth Brooks Student Center on 
USM's Gorham campus.
     During the 2003-04 academic year, the 103 individuals met the criteria to 
receive the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award.  The criteria includes each individual 
compiling a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring 
semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and that they utilized a season 
of eligibility as a member of a varsity team or the cheering squad.
     Ten student-athletes will be honored with their fourth Wise Award.  Among 
this select group are Deedra Boudreau (Camden, Maine; field hockey and lacrosse), 
Sarah Dolley (Oakland, Maine; field hockey), Melanie Fike (Manchester Maine; 
lacrosse), Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine; field hockey and softball), Darci 
Holland (Buckfield, Maine; field hockey and softball), Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, 
Maine; cross country, indoor and outdoor track), Tricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.; 
ice hockey), Rachel Kwantz (Wiscasset, Maine; soccer), Pat McCarthy (Medford, 
Mass.; baseball) and Avery McGill (Middlebury, Vt.; lacrosse).  This group brings 
the number of four-time Wise Award winners to 42 since the program began.
     A total of 12 student-athletes will receive their third Wise Award, including 
Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.; soccer), Linc Bigelow (St. Johnsbury, Vt., 
basketball), Stephanie Daggett (Guilford, Maine; field hockey), Jeff Gray 
(Scarborough, Maine/Yarmouth HS; soccer), Tasha Gerken (Buxton, Maine/Sunapee, 
N.H. HS; volleyball), Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.; softball), Amy 
Ouellette (Jay, Maine; field hockey), Adam Russell (Winterport, Maine; 
basketball), Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.; field hockey and lacrosse), Andy 
Urbanak (Cornwall, Vt.; tennis), Kristy Wechter (South Berwick, Maine; cross 
country, indoor and outdoor track), and Molly Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.; ice 
hockey).
     Among the 103 recipients this year were 25 student-athletes who received 
their second Wise Scholar-Athlete Award.  They include Megan Allyn (Cumberland, 
Maine; tennis), Justin Almy (New Sharon, Maine; basketball), Jeff Averill (South 
Portland, Maine; indoor and outdoor track), Matt Collaton (Oakville, Ontario; ice 
hockey), Angela Cote (Windham, Maine; softball), Emily Daigle 
 (Rollinsford, N.H.; volleyball), Shaun Darrow (Lanesboro, Mass.; wrestling) and 
Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine; indoor and outdoor track).
     Also Jill Fernandes (Taunton, Mass., cross country), Matt Filteau 
(Waterville, Maine; tennis), Emily Forbes (North Berwick, Maine; softball), Katie 
Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS; basketball), Audra Hill (Braintree, Mass.; ice 
hockey), Raheem Jammeh (Gambia; soccer), Chris Kachinski (Peabody, Mass.; cross 
country and indoor track), Lindsay Kuhn (South Burlington, Vt.; outdoor track), 
Andrea Lambrecht (Norwood, Mass.; indoor track) and Sophia Louis (Saco, Maine; 
soccer).     Additional two-time winners were Rachel Nimon (Augusta, Maine; field 
hockey), Jason Ouellette (Levant, Maine; basketball and tennis), Melissa Patten 
(Bucksport, Maine; cross country and indoor track), Greg Stacy (Denmark, Maine; 
baseball), Mike Suesse (Westborough, Mass.; soccer), Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford, 
Maine; soccer, basketball and outdoor track), and Kari Vance (Lincoln, Maine; 
indoor track and softball).
     There are 56 first-time winners this year.
     Among the 103 award winners were 26 student-athletes who competed in more 
than one season, including eight that competed in all three seasons.  Nine states, 
two Canadian provinces and one other foreign country are represented among the 
honorees.
     The award program, which was started in 1987-88, is named to honor William B. 
Wise, a retired USM administrator and friend of athletics.  Wise, a graduate of 
the University of Maine, came to USM in 1966 as assistant dean of academic affairs 
and director of the evening college.  In the ensuing years, he served USM as 
acting dean of the College of Education, assistant to the vice president for 
academic affairs, executive assistant to the president, and executive assistant to 
the vice president for student affairs.
