110 Earn USM Scholar-Athlete Award
GORHAM, Maine -- The Department of Athletics at the University of Southern
Maine will honor 110 student-athletes on Sunday, October 26, with the William B.
Wise Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2002-2003 academic year.
The Wise Award recipients will be honored at a reception and dinner at the
Kenneth Brooks Student Center on USM's Gorham campus. The 110 award winners
represent 29.0% of the 376 individuals that comprised the 24 varsity athletic and
cheering squads in 2002-03.
During the 2002-03 academic year, the 110 individuals met the criteria to
receive the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award. The criteria includes each individual
compiling a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring
semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and that they utilized a season
of eligibility as a member of a varsity team or the cheering squad.
One student-athlete, Marcy Muller (Farmington, Maine; volleyball), will
receive her fifth Wise Award. She is the fifth student-athlete to earn five Wise
Awards since the program was started in 1987-88.
Ten student-athletes will be honored with their fourth Wise Award. Among
this select group are Brian Aceto (Gorham, Maine; ice hockey), Miranda Derenburger
(Oxford, Maine; volleyball), Sean Diette (Newport, Vt.; cross country and indoor
track); Becky Kimball (Arundel, Maine; indoor track); Andy Lang (New Bedford,
Mass.; baseball); Jessica Libby (Orono, Maine; basketball); Sarah McLean
(Portsmouth, R.I.; tennis and softball); Jessica Short (Bennington, Vt.; cross
country, indoor and outdoor track); Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine; indoor and
outdoor track); and Matt Tarbox (Standish, Maine; basketball). This group brings
the number of four-time Wise Award winners to 32 since the program began.
A total of 16 student-athletes will receive their third Wise Award, including
Deedra Boudreau (Camden, Maine; field hockey and lacrosse), Darcey Comer (South
Berwick, Maine; lacrosse), Eric Drew (Cranston, R.I.; soccer), Melanie Fike
(Manchester, Maine; volleyball and lacrosse), Nikki Freeman (Whitefield, Maine;
volleyball, indoor and outdoor track), Heather French (Smithfield, Maine; outdoor
track), Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine; field hockey and softball), Darci Holland
(Buckfield, Maine; field hockey and softball), Tricia Kamp (West Caldwell, N.J.;
ice hockey and lacrosse), Rachel Kwantz (Wiscasset, Maine; soccer), Kati Libby
(Orono, Maine; lacrosse), Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine; cross country), Pat
McCarthy (Medford, Mass.; baseball), Pat Otto (Furlong, Penn.; golf), Drew Palmer
(Rothesay, New Brunswick; baseball), and Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.; cross
country, indoor and outdoor track).
Among this year's 110 honorees are 24 student-athletes who will receive their
second Wise Award. Among those recipients are Ryan Adams (Sanford, Maine;
baseball), Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.; soccer), Gerald "Linc" Bigelow (St.
Johnsbury, Vt.; basketball), Bethany Blackstone (Presque Isle, Maine; indoor and
outdoor track), Aaron Boulter (North Conway, N.H.; tennis), Meg Bristol
(Fairfield, Conn.; volleyball), Jessie Cotton (South Portland, Maine; cross
country, indoor and outdoor track), Stephanie Daggett (Guilford, Maine; field
hockey), Rebecca DeSantis (Manchester, N.H.; cross country), Tobey Farrington
(Scarborough, Maine; lacrosse), Ryan Garland (Hermon, Maine; golf and basketball),
and Andrea Guerette (Fairfield, Maine; lacrosse).
Also Kendall Guyette (West Farmington, Maine; indoor and outdoor track),
Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.; softball), Amy Ouellette (Jay, Maine; field
hockey), Alyson Peverly (York, Maine; cross country), Courtney Rideout (South
Portland, Maine; ice hockey), Adam Russell (Winterport, Maine; sailing and
basketball), Jessie Superchi (Campton, N.H.; field hockey and lacrosse), Molly
Tanguay (Yarmouth, Maine; soccer), Jason Thibodeau (Old Town, Maine; baseball),
Andy Urbanak (Cornwall, Vt.; tennis), Kristy Wechter (South Berwick, Maine; cross
country, indoor and outdoor track) and Molly Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.; ice
hockey).
There are 58 first-time winners this year.
Among the 110 award winners were 31 student-athletes who competed in more
than one season, including seven that competed in all three seasons.
Since the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award program began in 1987-88, a total of 989
awards have been presented. In addition to the five five-time winners and 32
four-time winners, there have been 69 three-time winners, 133 two-time recipients
and 386 single winners.
