Twenty-four USM Athletes Named to LEC Spring All-Academic Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Twenty-four University of Southern Maine spring sport athletes have been named to the 2008 Little East Conference All-Academic team that was released recently. This is the first year that the Little East has recognized an All-Academic team in the seven sponsored conference spring sports (baseball, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, softball, men's tennis, men's outdoor track and field, and women's outdoor track and field). To qualify for the team, student-athletes must be at least of sophomore academic and athletic standing, have a 3.20 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a full-time member of an LEC sponsored sport. USM student-athletes named to the LEC All-Academic team from baseball were sophomore pitcher-first baseman Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine/George Stevens Academy) and junior outfielder Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy). Women's lacrosse players recognized included senior midfielder Georgia Hurd (Bath, Maine/Hyde School, senior attack Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, Vt.) and senior defender Amy McNally (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic). Earning a spot on the All-Academic team from softball was sophomore infielder Tiffany Jordan (Bryant Pond, Maine/Telstar). Sophomore men's tennis standout Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) also was named to the team. Eight members of the men's outdoor track and field team were named to the team including junior Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine), sophomore Will Fulford (Kennebunk, Maine), sophomore Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic), junior Adam Royer (Falmouth, Maine), senior Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook), junior Greg Voner (Dresden, Maine/Hall-Dale), and seniors Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union). The women's outdoor track and field team had the most members named to the squad. Among the nine women selected were sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine), senior Sarah Cannon (Sanford, Maine), senior Alicia Croteau (Berwick, Maine/Noble), sophomore Sarah Hale (Naples, Maine/Lake Region), senior Jessie Hobgood (North Berwick, Maine/Noble), senior Christa Hutchinson [Gorham, Maine/Falmouth (Mass.)], sophomore Abby Kramer (Manchester, N.H./Memorial), junior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) and junior Brenna Widdis (Gorham, Maine). For the 2007-08 academic year, USM had 76 student-athletes from the three sports seasons recognized with a spot on an LEC All-Academic team.
