Christa Hutchinson Named to ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth [Mass.] HS) of the University of Southern Maine women's track and field and cross country teams has been selected to the 2007 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District One first team in the College Division as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Hutchinson is the third of three USM student-athletes to be recognized by CoSIDA during the 2006-07 academic year. She joins women's basketball standout Ashley Marble and women's lacrosse player Virginia Flood as Academic All- District honorees. Hutchinson is a self-design major in international relations. During the 2006-07 year, Hutchinson served as one of team's four captains for the Huskies' indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. In cross country, she was the team's top finisher in four of five events. Her best time came in the Codfish Bowl Harrier Classic at Franklin Park in Boston when she covered the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 20 seconds. On the winter indoor circuit, Hutchinson won the 600 meters at the New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships with her time of 1:41.63, and also scored in the 1,000 meters (3:23.52) and the triple jump (32-9 1/2). She earned Division III All-New England honors a week later placing sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:21.50. Hutchinson posted two personal best marks (600 and 800 meters) during the indoor campaign. Outdoors, Hutchinson had personal bests in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.27 at the Alliance/LEC Championships, in the 400-meter hurdles clocking 1:07.30 during the team's spring Florida trip, and in the triple jump with a leap of 34-3 at the Aloha Relays held at Bowdoin College. To be eligible for ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America® nomination by their respective institution, a student-athlete must carry a 3.2 minimum cumulative grade point average, be of sophomore standing (no freshman or first- year transfers), and be a starter or important reserve. The College Sports Information Directors of America selects Academic All- America® teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track and field/cross country, women's track and field/cross country, men's at- large and women's at large.
