USM's Amy Swanberg Named to Verizon Academic Second Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine) of the University of
Southern Maine Huskies women's track and field program has been named to the 2003
Verizon Academic District One College Division Women's Cross Country/Track and
Field Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA). The District One team was announced Thursday.
Athletes named to the academic district first team in each of the eight
CoSIDA districts advance to the Verizon National Academic All-America ballot.
Swanberg is the first member of the USM women's cross country/track and field
program to be named to the Verizon Academic District One team. She is the third
USM student-athlete to receive Verizon Academic District One honors this spring.
Senior shortstop Sarah McLean (Portsmouth, R.I.) was named to the softball first
team while senior Darryl Whitney (Hudson, N.H.) was named to the men's cross
country/track and field first team.
This past year, Swanberg was the New England Alliance/Little East Conference
outdoor champion in the pole vault (10-7), and placed second indoors (10-6). She
earned Division III All-New England and All-ECAC recognition during the outdoor
season when she placed fourth and fifth at those championships, respectively. She
also collected Division III All-New England honors during the indoor season when
she placed fourth (10-6).
The school record holder outdoors (11-0) and ranked second indoors (10-7),
Swanberg was a provisional qualifier for the 2003 NCAA indoor and outdoor national
championships meets, but did not make the field. Swanberg did competed in the
2000 NCAA indoor championship, and was a provisional qualifier for the indoor and
outdoor championships in 2002. She also won the Little East Conference indoor
title in 2001, and the outdoor title in 2002.
A multi-time winner of the USM Athletic Department's William Wise Scholar-
Athlete Award, Swanberg has been a Dean's List student every semester over the
past four year's. She is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honor society and the Beta
Gamma Sigma (business school) honor society. She graduated earlier this month
with a degree in business administration, with a minor in computer science, and a
3.87 cumulative grade point average.
