USM's Sarah McLean Named to Verizon Academic Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior shortstop Sarah McLean (Portsmouth, R.I.) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team has been named to the 2003
Verizon Academic District One College Division Softball Team as selected by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The District One teams
were announced Thursday.
Players named to the academic first team in each of the eight CoSIDA
districts advance to the Verizon National Academic All-America ballot.
McLean, a second team District One pick last year, is the third member of the
USM softball program to be named to the Verizon Academic District One first or
second team in the past five years.. June LaVallee was named to the second team
in 1999 and the first team in 2000. Julie Plant was a first team selection in
1999.
A four-year starter for the Huskies, McLean is batting .345 (38 for 1110)
with 27 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, two home runs and 17 RBI this
season.
During her four-year career, McLean has hit .348 (157 for 451) with 97 runs
scored, 30 doubles, seven triples, 14 home runs and 98 RBI. The single-game home
run record holder (three versus UMaine Farmington in April 2000), McLean is ranked
among the school's top ten in eight offensive categories. She also was named to
the All-Little East Conference second team in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
McLean has a 3.60 cumulative grade points average through seven semesters and
is majoring in history. To be nominated by a CoSIDA member at the institution,
the player must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic
credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale).
She must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution.
Southern Maine is 26-12 overall and 9-5 in the Little East Conference. The
Huskies advanced to the four-team, double-elimination portion of the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship
tournament, hosted by Springfield College this weekend (May 10-11), with a 1-0 win
over Rhode Island College Wednesday afternoon.
