Ashley Marble Named to D3hoops.com All-Decade Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Former University of Southern Maine women's basketball
All-American Ashley Marble (Topsfield, Maine/Woodland) has been named to the
D3hoops.com All-Decade second team. The announcement was made by D3hoops.com
publisher Pat Coleman on Monday.
Marble joins 24 other players who competed in the first decade of the
publication's existence: 1997-1998 to 2006-2007.
A prolific scorer and rebounder for the Huskies, Marble earned a litany of
awards during her career while helping the Huskies to an outstanding 119-10
overall record and a dominating 67-1 mark against Little East Conference (LEC)
opponents. In that four-year span (2003-2007), the Huskies captured four
consecutive LEC regular season and tournament championships, and advanced to the
NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Championship tournament each year.
USM advanced twice to the NCAA Division III Final Four, finishing third in 2005
and as the national runner-up in 2006. In 2004 and 2007, Southern Maine reached
the tournament's "Sweet Sixteen".
The 5-9 forward capped her career earning National Player of the Year
honors from both D3hoops.com and Women's DIII News, while repeating as a
Kodak/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and D3hoops.com All-American
(2006, 2007). Marble was a third team D3hoops.com All-American honoree as a
sophomore (2005).
Upon naming Marble the D3hoops.com 2007 Player of the Year, Coleman
remarked, "Ashley Marble represented the heart and soul of a Division III
basketball player. Not only was she a phenomenal player from a statistical
perspective this season (2007), but she played with the highest levels of energy
and emotion in willing her team to a conference championship and NCAA
appearance. She is a very worthy selection for player of the year honors."
As a senior Marble played in all 30 games and averaged 23.1 points and 12.2
rebounds per game, while shooting 49.6 percent (224-of-452) from the floor,
including 36.8 percent (28-for-76) from three-point range. She set USM single-
season records for points (693), scoring average (23.1) and free throws made
(217). Her 367 rebounds during her senior season is second all-time for a
single-season at USM.
"A tremendous athlete with physical gifts and talents, Ashley was able to
succeed at such a high level of competition because she set the bar incredibly
high for herself," noted Southern Maine veteran head coach Gary Fifield. "No
matter the outcome of the game or how well she played, she looked for things she
could do better."
Among the numerous awards she received for her outstanding play in the
2006-2007 season, Marble was named the Little East Conference Player of the Year
for the third consecutive season, and the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches
Association (MWBCA) Player of the Year and the D3hoops.com Northeast Region
Player of the Year for the second straight season. Marble also was named the
New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Player of the Year and was
selected to the NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic. She was also named a first team
all-star by all four organizations.
Excelling in the classroom, Marble was named the ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA
Academic All-America (r) of the Year for the College Division and a first team
Academic All-America (r).
Marble completed her stellar four-year career with 1,981 points and 1,157
rebounds. She is ranked second all-time in career points and holds the school
record for rebounds.
Averaging 15.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game in her career, she is in
the top 15 in 12 career statistical categories. She is ranked first all-time in
games played (128), free throws made (608), free throws attempted (847) and
rebounds. She is second in point scored, fifth in scoring average, and fourth
in rebounding average, field goals made (650) and field goals attempted (1,290).
Marble is also ranked seventh in career field goal percentage (50.6) and 12th in
free throw percentage (71.8).
