Athletes Committed to Education and Sports (ACES) Athletes Committed to Education and Sports (ACES) is a program that recognizes the transition from high school to college to be one of the most difficult adjustments for first-year students to make. The ACES program is geared towards assisting students in this transitional phase by promoting positive, healthy lifestyles among first year student athletes who may be experiencing a variety of personal, academic, or team related challenges. The program works by pairing upperclass student athlete mentors with incoming student athletes who are involved in the same sport. The mentors meet several times throughout the year to discuss the program, transitional issues, and to receive training in referral skill, decision-making skills, and leadership skills. The mentors meet with their mentees several times throughout the semester to discuss issues they may be facing and resources to get help. This program will be administered by Al Bean- Director of Athletics, Kim Turner- Assistant Director of Athletics, Paul Dexter- Substance Abuse Counselor, Matt Gerken- Head Athletic Trainer and Meredith Bickford- Gorham Learning Center manager. To find out more information, call any of the ACES administrators listed above. |
