HS) successfully defended her titles by capturing the 1999 New England Alliance
and the Little East Conference individual titles with a record setting
performance Saturday morning over the 5,000-meter Keene State College course.
Osborne's record setting run helped the University of Southern Maine Huskies win
the team championship in both events.
The Huskies edged Westfield State, 30-32, to capture their second Alliance
championship in the three years the event has been contested. USM easily
outdistanced the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 16-67, for its sixth

Penny Osborne Named USM Women's X-C Captain
Huskies Begin Preparation for September 4 Opener

GORHAM, Maine -- Fifth-year senior Penny Osborne (Farmington, Maine/Mt.
Blue H.S.), who only began running cross country competitively in 1996, has been
named captain of the 1999 University of Southern Maine women's cross country
team. Veteran head coach George Towle made the announcement prior to the
Huskies departing on their annual preseason training trip.
The Huskies began workouts Tuesday (August 24) for the upcoming nine-meet
season. Southern Maine opens the 1999 season Saturday, September 4 hosting the
Mackworth Island Invitational (12:00).
Osborne, who shared the captain's responsibilities last season, won the
Little East Conference individual title last season. In addition, she earned
All-State honors by finishing second at that the state meet, All-New England
honors by finishing in the top 30 in the open New England meet (Divisions One,
Two and Three) at Franklin Park (Boston, Mass.), and Division Three All-New
England accolades by finishing seventh at the NCAA New England Regional
Championship.
"Penny has become a real force at the (New England) regional level,"
commented Towle. "Just as important, she has developed into a very effective
team leader. I'll be counting on her this year for her running and her
leadership.
"Penny loves to run and it shows," continued Towle. "She is still
learning how to race. If everything comes together, she could be representing
USM at this year's (NCAA national championship race). The countless hours she
worked this summer on the family farm have helped her to return in the best
shape of her career."
During her sophomore campaign (1997), she earned All-State, All-Little
East, All-ECAC and Division Three All-New England honors.
The remainder of the Huskies' fall schedule includes: Sept. 11, at Colby
College Relays (11:00 a.m.); and Sept. 25, at New York University Invitational
(10:00 a.m.).
Also Oct. 2, at Babson College Invitational (11:15 a.m.); Oct. 9, Maine
State Championships at the Beech Ridge X-C Course in Scarborough (11:00); Oct.
15, New England Championships at Franklin Park (12:45); and Oct. 30, Little
East Conference Championship at Keene, N.H. (12:00).
The Huskies conclude their season in November with the ECAC Championship
at the Tufts University course in Grafton, Mass., on Nov. 6, and the NCAA
Regional Championship at Babson College on Nov. 13. The NCAA Division Three
National Championship will be Nov. 20 in Oshkosh, Wisc.
