Huskies Sweep Alliance, Little East Titles
Osborne Captures Individual Crowns for the Second Straight Year
KEENE, N.H. -- Senior captain Penny Osborne (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue
HS) successfully defended her titles by capturing the 1999 New England Alliance
and the Little East Conference individual titles with a record setting
performance Saturday morning over the 5,000-meter Keene State College course.
Osborne's record setting run helped the University of Southern Maine Huskies win
the team championship in both events.
The Huskies edged Westfield State, 30-32, to capture their second Alliance
championship in the three years the event has been contested. USM easily
outdistanced the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 16-67, for its sixth
Little East title in the 12-year history of the event.
The Alliance championship features schools from the Little East Conference
and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference. The Little East
championship is scored from the same race.
Osborne cruised the 5,000 meters in 18:11 to outdistance runner-up Diana
Cares of Westfield State by 1:32. This is the second straight year that Osborne
has set a course record in the meet. She set the course record in last year's
meet held at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass. She has won three of her five
races this fall, finished second once, and was ninth at the New England (all
divisions) Championships two weeks ago.
In the Alliance race scoring, freshman Allison Lambrecht (Norwood,
Mass./Norwood HS) finished fourth followed by sophomore Tracy Buxton (South
Hampton, N.H./Amesbury [Mass.] HS) in fifth and freshman Jessica Short
(Bennington, Vt./Mt. Anthony Union) in sixth place. Freshman Jennifer Ditzel
(Charleston, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) was the final scoring runner in 14th place.
Earning All-New England Alliance citations for finishing in the top 20
were Osborne, Lambrecht, Buxton, Short, Ditzel, and juniors Alyssa Bergeron
(Methuen, Mass./Methuen HS) and Hollie Harnish (Bangor, Maine/Bangor HS).
In the Little East race scoring, the Huskies placed all seven scoring
runners among the first eight finishers, including the first four positions.
Earning All-Little East honors by virtue of finishing among the top seven were
Osborne, Lambrecht, Buxton, Short, Ditzel and Bergeron.

Little East Conference individual title last season. In addition, she earned

"Penny has become a real force at the (New England) regional level,"
commented Towle. "Just as important, she has developed into a very effective
team leader. I'll be counting on her this year for her running and her
leadership.
"Penny loves to run and it shows," continued Towle. "She is still
learning how to race. If everything comes together, she could be representing
USM at this year's (NCAA national championship race). The countless hours she
worked this summer on the family farm have helped her to return in the best
shape of her career."
During her sophomore campaign (1997), she earned All-State, All-Little
East, All-ECAC and Division Three All-New England honors.
