Russell Named USM Women's Indoor Track Captain
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Erin Russell (Conway, N.H./Kennett HS) of the University of
Southern Maine women's track team has been named team captain for the 1997-98 indoor season.
Head coach George Towle made the announcement.
Russell is the school record holder, both indoors and outdoors, in the shot put and ranked
second in the discus. She will compete in the shot put and the 20-lb. weight throw during the
upcoming indoor season.
She competed in six meets last winter breaking the previous shot put mark of 36-9 set by
Dorothy Anthony in 1996 with a throw of 37-6 while competing at Bowdoin College on February 1.
She smashed her own record six days later with a heave of 38-9 3/4 at the State Championships
held at Bates College.
During the 1996-97 indoor season, the 6-foot Russell earned All-State, Division III All-New
England and Division III All-ECAC honors. In the last five meets, she placed among the top six
finishers, and twice threw over 38 feet.
Russell smashed the old outdoor mark of 38-10 set in 1996 by Anthony with a heave of 39-9
1/2 at the Trinity College Invitational in Hartford, Conn. (April 5).
The Huskies open their first official varsity indoor season January 10 when they travel to
Lewiston, Maine for the Bates College Open.
