USM's Jess Short Attends NCAA Leadership Conference
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine women's cross country and
track standout Jessica Short (Bennington, Vt.) is among the 282 student-athletes
from across the nation that are to attending the sixth annual National
Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Foundation Leadership Conference at
Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and the Coronado Springs Resort in Lake
Buena Vista, Florida. The conference is being held May 26-30.
Short is the ninth USM student-athlete to be selected to attend the
conference in its six-year history. Other former USM student-athletes to attend
the conference include Heather Gilmour and Ed Pike (1997), Kim Cochrane and
Michael McCullum (1998), Michelle Cloutier (1999), Kevin Faria (2000) and Tina
West and Tony Coates (2001).
A co-captain of the cross country team last fall, Short earned All-New
England Alliance honors and was among the Huskies' top three finishers in nearly
every meet. During the winter indoor track season, she earned All-Alliance and
All-Little East Conference honors in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs. This
spring, Short collected Division III All-New England honors in the 10,000
meters, and All-Alliance and All-Little East citations for winning the 10,000
meters at the Alliance/Little East championships meet..
Among the featured speakers at the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference
are Lloyd Ward, United States Olympic Committee (USOC) chief executive officer,
and Donna Lopiano, Women's Sports Foundation executive director. They will
speak on leadership, diversity and unity in sports.
According to an NCAA release, the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference
was designed to enhance NCAA student-athletes' leadership and communication
skills to enable them to become more effective leaders and motivators when they
return to their campuses. The convention setting provides the student-athletes
with an opportunity to discuss key issues that affect them on campus
and in their communities. The conference also provides them with exercises to
enhance their decision-making and problem-solving skills, and improve planning
and priority management. The conference is one of the largest non-competitive
gatherings of NCAA student-athletes.
The student-athletes chosen to attend the conference were from among 1,183
nominations submitted from colleges and universities that participate in the
NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The student-athletes attending the conference
represent 20 NCAA sports: alpine skiing, basketball, baseball, cross country,
equestrian, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse,
rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field,
volleyball, water polo and wrestling.
Criteria for selection include the student-athletes' demonstrated ability
and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes' potential to benefit
significantly from a leadership development experience. A committee comprised
of CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinators from member institutions and NCAA student-
athletes review the nominations to determine the final selections.

Derenburger, Brewer Tie for First in ECAC Heptathlon
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) and freshman
Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's
outdoor track and field team finished in a first place tie in the heptathlon at
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Men's and Women's
Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Springfield College Thursday
and Friday (May 16-17).
Brewer and Derenburger each compiled 4,178 points during the two-day,
seven-events heptathlon.
Junior Nikki Freeman (Whitefield, Maine) placed third (six points) in the
pole vault, clearing a personal best 3.35 meters (10-11 3/4) during the first
day of competition. Freshman Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine) also scored,
taking seventh place (two points) in the javelin with a throw of 123-11 on
Thursday.
The Huskies 4 x 100-meter relay quartet of freshman Kristen Ingalls
(Raymond, Maine), junior Kendall Guyette (West Farmington, Maine), senior
Heather French (Smithfield, Maine) and Freeman finished tenth with their time of
51.26 seconds.
Other USM competitors included junior Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine) and
senior Stephanie Dubois (Lewiston, Maine) in the pole vault, Guyette in the 200
meters, and junior Kara Crockett (Glenburn, Maine) in the discus.
Southern Maine earned 26 points to finish tied for seventh among the 50
teams scoring in the meet. Wheaton College won the team championship with 109
points.

USM Ties for Sixth at New England Championships
Brewer, Sinclair Set School Records
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) set three
school records and classmate Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine) set a fourth
as the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's outdoor track and field team
finished in a tie for sixth place at the New England Division III Women's
Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Springfield College.
Brewer established new marks in the 100-meter hurdles and the 200 meters
while competing in the heptathlon. Her heptathlon total of 4,205 points placed
her second in the event and surpassed her old mark set last month by 55 points.
She ran the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.92 seconds to break the record of
16.33 seconds set by Jessica Gentile in April 1999. Brewer shaved 0.02 seconds
off her own 200 meter record with a time of 26.52 seconds.
Sinclair finished second in the javelin with a throw of 126-6, breaking
her own record of 123-3 set April 6 at Bates.
Senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) placed third in the heptathlon
with a total of 3,968 points.
Juniors Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine) and Nikki Freeman (Whitefield,
Maine) finished fourth and fifth respectively in the pole vault, each clearing
10-6.
Others scoring for the Huskies included junior Kendall Guyette (West
Farmington, Maine) with a sixth place in the 200 meters with a time of 27.09
seconds and junior Jess Short (Bennington, Vt.) who placed eighth in the 10,000
meters with her time of 41:12.83.
USM's 4 x 100-meter relay quartet of freshman Kristen Ingalls (Raymond,
Maine), Guyette, senior Heather French (Smithfield, Maine) and Freeman came home
in fourth place with their time of 51.15 seconds.
Williams College captured the team title with 163 points. Wheaton College
came in second with 133.50 points, followed by Colby College with 55 points,
Bowdoin College with 47.50 points and Worcester Polytech with 43.70. USM was
tied with Brandeis University for sixth with 40 points.
The Huskies will finish their 2002 outdoor season in two weeks when they
compete at the ECAC Division III Championships May 16-17 at Springfield College.

USM Huskies Win Alliance, LEC Titles for the Third Straight Year
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third straight year, the University of Southern
Maine Huskies women's outdoor track and field team has captured the team title
at the annual New England Alliance Women's Outdoor Track and Field
Championships. The Huskies compiled 191 points to win the all-day event held at
Westfield State College on Saturday (April 27).
The New England Alliance is comprised of schools from the Little East
Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference. USM
outdistanced Keene State College by 43 points for the team crown.
Also, the Huskies captured their third straight Little East Conference
title, and fourth in the five-year history of that championship, with a meet
record 263 points. Little East results were compiled from the Alliance meet and
announced Sunday.
Leading the way for the Huskies was freshman sensation Kim Brewer
(Bristol, Vt.) who scored in five individual events. Brewer won the 400-meter
hurdles with her time of 1:07.69. She also took second places in the long jump
(15-9), triple jump (33-7 1/4) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.52 seconds), and a
third place in the high jump (5-0).
Among the other highlights for the Huskies were the school record
performances of junior Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine) in the pole vault and
senior Kelly Busby (Biddeford, Maine) in the hammer throw.
Swanberg cleared 11-0 to win the pole vault and provisionally qualify for
next month's NCAA Division III national championships in St. Paul, Minn. She is
the fourth member of the team to surpass a provisional qualifying mark this
spring. She broke the old mark of 10-7 that she shared with classmate Nikki
Freeman (Whitefield, Maine).
Busby took second in the hammer throw with her record setting toss of
138-1. It was the third time this spring that she has broken the school record.
In addition, she won the discus with a throw of 118-7.
Other Alliance meet winners for the Huskies included junior Jess Short
(Bennington, Vt.) in the 10,000 meters with her time of 40:46.45 and the
4 x 100-meter relay quartet of freshman Kristen Ingalls (Raymond, Maine), junior
Kendall Guyette (West Farmington, Maine), senior Heather French (Smithfield,
Maine) and Freeman with a time of 51.56 seconds.
Also picking up second place finishes in the Alliance meet were freshman
Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine) in the javelin (120-5), Freeman in the pole
vault (10-6), and sophomore Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) in the 3,000
meters (11:05.57).
Southern Maine will travel to Springfield, Mass., on Friday and Saturday
to compete in the New England Division Three Women's Outdoor Track and Field
Championships meet being held at Springfield College. USM has 11 individuals
and one relay team qualified in 27 events .

Brewer, Derenburger Provisionally Qualify for NCAA Meet
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) and senior Miranda
Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor
track and field team both met the NCAA Division Three provisional qualifying
standard for the heptathlon while competing in the prestigious Penn Relays
Tuesday and Wednesday (April 23-24) at Franklin Park in Philadelphia.
Brewer placed seventh among the 12 competitors with 4,150 points while
Derenburger was ninth with 4,084 points. Both surpassed the school record of
4,022 points established by Derenburger in March at the Florida Relays. The
NCAA Division Three provisional qualifying standard is 4,000 points.
Brewer also set a school record in the 200 meters with her time of 26.54
seconds during the final event on the first day of competition. That time broke
the old mark of 26.58 she set April 6 at the Bates Invitational. She also had
personal best times in the 100-meter hurdles of 16.42 seconds and in the 800
meter run with a time of 2:30.23.
Se'verine Tanic of Morgan State won the heptathlon with 4,953 points.
Southern Maine will be in action this Saturday (April 27) at the combined
New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships being held at
Westfield State College.

Brewer, Busby Set Outdoor Track Marks
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) and senior Kelly
Busby (Biddeford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine women's outdoor
track team set school records, and senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine)
tied a third, Saturday afternoon (April 13) while competing in the M.I.T. Hosts
the State of Maine meet at the Steinbrenner Track in Cambridge, Mass.
Brewer, who set three school marks during the indoor season, establish her
second outdoor record when she cleared 5-3 1/2 (1.61 meters) in the high jump to
win the event. Brewer broke the old mark of 5-0 set by Amy Swanberg in the 2000
season and equaled last spring by Derenburger. Brewer also ran a personal best
in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 16.65 seconds to finish fifth, and
took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.85.
Busby broke her own record in the hammer throw by more than two feet with
a toss of 133-11 (40.82 meters). She finished seventh in the event. She also
took third place in the discus (112-0/34.14 meters).
Derenburger equaled her record in the long jump with a leap of 17-4 1/2
(5.30 meters) to win that event. She also took a second in the 200 meters
(27.38 seconds) and a fourth in the 100-meter hurdles (16.58 seconds).
Junior Kendall Guyette (West Farmington, Maine) was the only double winner
for Southern Maine, taking the 200 meters with a time of 26.95 seconds and the
400 meters in 1:00.86.
Other USM competitors picking up top three finishes included junior Amy
Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine), who finished third in the pole vault (9-6/2.90
meters), and freshman Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine), who took second in
the javelin (120-3/36.65 meters).
Colby College won the meet, amassing 201 points. Bowdoin College was
second with 178 points, followed by M.I.T. with 118 points, Southern Maine with
107 points and Bates College with 84 points.
Southern Maine will compete next weekend (Saturday, April 20) in the Aloha
Relays at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. The meet is scheduled to begin
at 11:30 a.m.

Three USM Huskies Set School Records at Bates Coed Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine
womenís outdoor track and field team set school records Saturday while competing
at the Bates College Coed Invitational Meet.
Establishing new USM marks were freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) in the
200 meters, junior Kendall Guyette (West Farmington, Maine) in the 100-meter
dash, and freshman Kristin Sinclair (Manchester, Maine) in the javelin throw.
Brewer covered the 200-meter distance in a time of 26.58 seconds to finish
second in the event while eclipsing the old standard of 26.84 seconds set last
May by Miranda Derenburger. Brewer also took third places in the 100-meter
hurdles with a time of 16.86 seconds and in the long jump with a leap of 4.97
meters.
Guyette broke the 100-meter dash record set in May 2000 by Lauren
McPartlin with her time of 13.00. Guyette, who trimmed 0.17 seconds off
McPartlinís mark, finished second in the event. Her third place time of 26.61
seconds in the 200 meters also beat Derenburgerís old 200-meter mark record.
Sinclair smashed the six-year old javelin throw record of Dorothy Anthony
by more than 14 feet to win the event. Her mark of 123-3 easily outdistanced
Anthonyís former record of 109-1 that had stood since May 1996.
Other individual event winners for Southern Maine included sophomore
Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) in the 5,000 meters (19:16.0) and junior Amy
Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine) in the pole vault (10-0).
Southern Maine finished fourth among the six teams competing with 110
points. Tufts University edged Colby College, 210-200, to win the meet. Bates
placed third with 121.5 points.
The Huskies will travel to Cambridge, Mass., this coming Saturday (April
13) to participate in the M.I.T. Invitational starting at 12:00 p.m.
