USM's Derenburger Wins ECAC Pentathlon
MEDFORD, Mass. -- University of Southern Maine senior track standout
Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) captured the pentathlon title Friday
afternoon at the annual Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III
Indoor Track and Field Championships being held this weekend at Tufts
University.
Derenburger, who was fourth in the event last year, won by scoring 2,993
points to outdistance Sarah Leistikow of Tufts University who had 2,857 points.
Joyia Chadwick of Williams College was third with 2,773 points.
The two-day championships will continue throughout the day Friday and
Saturday.

Huskies Set Three School Records at N.E. Division III Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies received three
school record performances on the way to an 11th place finish among the 30
schools participating in the 14th annual New England Division III Women's Indoor
Track and Field Championships held at the USM Field House Saturday.
Senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) broke her own record in the
pentathlon, scoring 3,085 points to finish second in the grueling five-event
combination. She becomes the first USM competitor to surpass the 3,000-point
barrier.
Sophomore Kristy Wechter (South Berwick, Maine) broke one of the longer
standing USM marks with her time of 3:08.17 in the 1,000 meter run. She broke
the old mark of 3:09.34 set by Amy Tripp in 1992.
The 4 x 200-meter relay combination of junior Kendall Guyette (West
Farmington, Maine), freshmen Kristen Ingalls (Raymond, Maine/Windham HS) and Kim
Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) and junior Lauren McPartlin (Oakland, Maine) broke the
1:50 barrier with their time of 1:49.53, shaving 0.59 seconds off the old mark,
to finish fifth in the event.
Other scoring competitors for the Huskies included junior Amy Swanberg
(Lamoine, Maine) in the pole vault (tied 6th, 10-4), Brewer in the 200 meter
dash (8th, 27.26) and long jump (6th, 16-8 1/2), sophomore Lauren Lohmeyer
(Portland, Maine) in the 5,000 meters (7th, 18:59.05), and senior Kelly Busby
(Biddeford, Maine) in the weight throw (8th, 45-0 1/2).
Southern Maine finished with 21.5 points. Wheaton College successfully
defended its title with 188.5 points, outdistancing runner-up Williams College
for the second straight year. Williams ended up with 152 points.
The Huskies return to action next Friday (February 22) evening when they
host the USM Invitational.

USM Sweeps New England Alliance, Little East Conference Titles
Three School Records Set
BOSTON, Mass. -- For the second straight year, the University of
Southern Maine women's indoor track team swept the team titles at the annual New
England Alliance and Little East Conference championships conducted Sunday
afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The Alliance championship involves schools from the Little East Conference
and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Little
East championship is scored from the same meet.
The Huskies used their overall depth to offset some outstanding individual
performances by Keene State College to edge the Owls, 169-158, in the Alliance
meet. The Huskies held a 210-188 advantage over the Owls in the Little East
scoring. The Little East title was the third for the Huskies in the four-year
history of the championship.
Winning individual titles were senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine)
in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.30 seconds, sophomore Lauren Lohmeyer
(Portland, Maine) in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:35.51 and junior Nikki
Freeman (Whitefield, Maine) in the pole vault by clearing 10-6. The 4 x 400-
meter relay team of junior Kendall Guyette (West Farmington, Maine), freshman
Kristen Ingalls (Raymond, Maine), senior Heather French (Smithfield, Maine) and
Derenburger took the top spot.
Freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) continued her assault on the USM record
book, breaking the 200-meter mark she established four days earlier at the state
championships with her time of 26.84 seconds. Brewer scored 33 points in the
meet by taking second place in the 200, the 55-meter hurdles, long jump and
triple jump, and sixth place in the high jump.
The 4 x 400-meter relay team's time of 4:14.46 broke the old mark set four
weeks ago by over two seconds, and the 4 x 200-meter relay quartet of Guyette,
Ingalls, junior Angela Cote (Windham, Maine/York HS) and junior Lauren McPartlin
(Oakland, Maine) shaved three-tenths of a second off the record with their time
of 1:50.12.
Southern Maine will host the New England Division III Indoor Track and
Field Championships this Saturday (February 16) at the USM Field House. The
field events get underway at 11:00 a.m.

Huskies Take Second at State Meet
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's indoor track
team finished second among the four teams competing at the annual Maine
Intercollegiate Indoor Track and Field Championships held Wednesday evening at
the USM Field House.
The Huskies finished with 146 points to edge Colby College by 1.5 points
for the runnerup spot. Bowdoin College won the team championship, scoring 203
points.
Three USM competitors set school records during the meet, and a fourth set
a meet record. Senior Kelly Busby (Biddeford, Maine) broke her weight throw
mark for the third time this season with a toss of 47-9 1/2 to place second.
Senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) extended her long jump mark,
surpassing the 17-foot barrier for the first time in competition with her leap
of 17-0 1/2 to win the event. Freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) won the 200-
meter dash with her time of 27.26 seconds, breaking the mark of 27.35 set by
Rebecca Reed in February 1999.
Junior pole vaulter Nikki Freeman (Whitefield, Maine) set the only meet
record, winning the pole vault by clearing 10-6.
Other winners for the Huskies included junior Kendall Guyette (West
Farmington, Maine) in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.09, and the 4 x 200-
meter relay quartet of Guyette, freshman Kristen Ingalls (Raymond, Maine/Windham
HS), junior Angela Cote (Windham, Maine/York HS) and junior Lauren McPartlin
(Oakland, Maine).
The Huskies return to action Sunday when they travel to the Reggie Lewis
Center in Boston for the annual New England Alliance and Little East Conference
championships meet.

Huskies Dominate USM Invitational
Busby Extends Her School Record in Weight Record
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's indoor track
dominated the USM Coed Invitational on Saturday, easily outdistancing five
rivals at the USM field house.
USM used its superior depth to score 219 points. New York University
finished second in the six-team meet with 105 points, followed by Rhode Island
College with 43 points.
For the second time in the last three meets, senior Kelly Busby
(Biddeford, Maine) extended her school record in the weight throw while winning
the event. Busby broke her previous mark by a foot with her throw of 46-10 1/4.
The mark is a provisional qualifying mark for the upcoming NCAA Division III
national championships in March.
The Huskies took first in seven other events, and scored in every event.
Other winners included junior Lauren McPartlin (Oakland, Maine) in the 55-meter
dash (7.89), sophomore Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) in the 3,000 meters
(11:09.15), junior Nikki Freeman (Whitefield, Maine) in the pole vault (10-0),
senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) in the long jump (16-4 3/4) and the
shot put (32-5 1/2), freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) in the triple jump (34-
11 1/4), and the 4 x 400-meter relay.
Southern Maine's next meet will be February 6 when the Huskies host the
annual State of Maine Championships. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m.

Huskies Finish Fourth at Tufts Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine women's indoor track
team posted a solid fourth place finish at the Tufts University Invitational
Saturday afternoon.
The 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of senior Heather French (Smithfield,
Maine), freshman Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.), junior Kendall Guyette (West
Farmington, Maine) and senior Miranda Derenburger (Oxford, Maine) combined for
the only school record during the meet. They covered the relay in a time of
4:16.82 to finish third, breaking the old record set in February 1999 by almost
three seconds.
Other top three finishes included senior Kelly Busby (Biddeford, Maine) in
the weight throw (2nd, 13.91 meters), Brewer in the triple jump (3rd, 10.50
meters), sophomore Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) in the 3,000 meter run
(2nd, 10:56.97) and the 4 x 200-meter relay.
Southern Maine's next meet will be the USM Coed Invitational on Saturday
(January 26), starting at 1:00 p.m.
