Huskies Take Third at LEC-Alliance Championships

	WARWICK, R.I.  --  Freshman Kristy Wechter (South Berwick, Maine) crossed 
the line in eighth place overall to help the University of Southern Maine 
Huskies women's cross country team finish third at the fourth annual New England 
Alliance Women's Cross Country Championship run Saturday at Goddard Memorial 
State Park in Warwick, R.I.
	The Alliance championship race involves schools from the Little East 
Conference, of which Southern Maine is a member, and the Massachusetts State 
College Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
	In the 13th annual Little East Conference Championship scored from the 
same meet, Southern Maine also finished third behind Keene State and the 
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
	Keene State won its first Alliance and LEC crowns scoring 17 points in 
both meets.  UMass Dartmouth edged the Huskies by two points in both meets.
	Wechter covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:29.06.  By virtue 
of her seventh place finish in the Little East scoring, she earned All-Little 
East honors.  
	The other scoring USM runners included sophomore Tiffany Cook (Leesburg, 
Fla.) in 13th place (20:45.48), freshman Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) in 
18th place overall (21:04.27), sophomore Andrea Lambrecht (Norwood, Mass.) in 
24th place (21:53.80), and freshman Jessie Cotton (South Portland, Maine) in 
47th place overall (22:59.67).  Wechter, Cook and Lohmeyer all earned All-
Alliance honors.
	Sophomore Mary Proulx (Ashland, N.H.) of Keene State took home the 
individual title with a time of 19:10.20.

New England Championship Results

	BOSTON, Mass.  --  Freshman Kristy Wechter (South Berwick, Maine) was the 
first University of Southern Maine Husky runner across the finish line at the 
annual New England Women's Collegiate Cross Country Championship held at 
Franklin Park on Friday.
	Wechter covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:05 to take 147th 
place overall among the 254 finishers.  Other USM runners included sophomore 
Jessica Short (Bennington, Vt.), freshman Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine), 
sophomore Tiffany Cook (Leesburg, Fla.) and sophomore Andrea Lambrecht (Norwood, 
Mass.).
	The Huskies finished 34th among the 36 teams competing.
	Yale University sophomore Laura O'Neill edged out twin sister Kate and 
senior Rachel Hixson of Providence College for the individual championship.  All 
three runners were given a time of 17:35.  Yale took the team title by placing 
its first five runners among the top seven finishers for 20 points.  Providence 
was second.
	Southern Maine will take next weekend off before returning to action on 
October 28 when the Huskies travel to Rhode Island to compete in the Little East 
Conference Championship.

Huskies Finish Fifth in Maine State Meet

	WATERVILLE, Maine  --  Freshman Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) was the 
top finisher for the University of Southern Maine women's cross country team as 
the Huskies placed fifth among eight schools competing in the Maine State 
Women's Championship Saturday afternoon at Colby College.
	Lohmeyer covered the 5000 meter course in a time of 20:20 to finish 11th 
overall among 103 runners.  Sophomore Jessica Short (Bennington, Vt.) placed 
21st at 20:46 and freshman Kristy Wechter (South Berwick, Maine) ran a 20:51 to 
take 23rd.  Sophomores Tiffany Cook (Leesburg, Fla.) and Andrea Lambrecht 
(Norwood, Mass.) finished 46th (22:07) and 49th (22:10) to close out USM's 
scoring.
	Bates sophomore Abigail Anthony (Jamestown, R.I.) captured individual 
honors with a time of 18:34.
	Colby junior Maria Mensching (South Windsor, Conn.) finished second at 
18:41 to lead five Colby harriers among the top seven.  The Mules dominated the 
meet scoring 24 points.
	The Huskies travel to Boston Friday (October 13) for the New England 
Championship at Franklin Park.

Huskies Edge Beavers in St. Joseph's Invitational

	STANDISH, Maine  --  Freshman Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) finished 
third overall to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a one-point 
victory over the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers in the five-team 
Saint Joseph's College Women's Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning.
	Lohmeyer covered the 4950-meter course in 21:15 to pace five Huskies' 
harriers finishing in the top eleven.  Sophomore Jessica Short (Bennington, Vt.) 
placed fourth in 21:24 followed by freshman Kristy Wechter (South Berwick, 
Maine) who ran a 21:43 to grab fifth.  Sophomore twin sisters Allison and Andrea 
Lambrecht (Norwood, Mass.) finished ninth (21:56) and eleventh (22:08) overall 
to round out USM's top five.
	Freshman Corrie Pietras (Lincoln, Maine) of UMaine Farmington captured 
individual honors with a time of 19:55.  Sophomore teammate Kate McGuire 
(Holden, Maine) followed 15 seconds later to finish second.
	Southern Maine tallied 30 points to UMF's 31 points.  The University of 
New England finished third, followed by Babson College and host Saint Joseph's 
College.  Maine Maritime Academy, Unity College and the University of Maine 
Machias also competed but did not field full squads.
	The Huskies next meet is Saturday October 7 at the Maine State 
Championship in Waterville.  Colby College is the host institution.

Huskies Finish in Middle of the Pack

	NEW YORK, N.Y.  --  Freshman Lauren Lohmeyer (Portland, Maine) was the top 
finisher for the University of Southern Maine women's cross country team as the 
Huskies placed 20th among the 37 teams competing at the New York University 
Cross Country Invitational run at Van Cortland Park in New York City.
	Lohmeyer covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 20:47.73 to place 
68th overall among the 263 runners that finished the race.  Sophomore Jess Short 
(Bennington, Vt.) was USM's second finisher coming in 87th with a time of 
21:04.42.
	Sophomore Alex Forte of Dickinson University captured individual honors 
with a time of 18:44.20.  The College of New Jersey took the team title scoring 
68 points.
