Amy Swanberg Qualifies for NCAA Division III Nationals
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman pole vaulter Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine) of
the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team has
qualified for the 2000 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships to
be held this weekend (March 10-11) at Illinois Wesleyan University in
Bloomington, Illinois.
Swanberg is the second USM women's indoor track and field participant to
qualify for the NCAA championship. Current USM assistant coach Angela
(Whelchel) Lally qualified for the 1991 indoor championships in the 400 meters.
Swanberg secured her spot in this year's championship by clearing 10-6 1/4
at last weekend's ECAC Division III Championships at Wheaton College. She
placed second in the event and broke the school record she shared with sophomore
Stephanie Dubois (Lewiston, Maine) by nearly ten inches. Swanberg is presently
ranked seventh in the nation among Division III women pole vaulters. This is
the first year that the women's pole vault will be contested at the NCAA
Division III championship.
Earlier this season, Swanberg won the Maine State Indoor Championship by
clearing 9-6, and was sixth at the New England Division III Championships. The
highest height she had cleared prior to the ECAC Championships was 9-8 1/4 at
the Quad Cup meet held at Bates College on February 4.
The women's pole vault gets underway on Friday at 11:30 a.m.

Busby smashed her previous mark in the 20-lb. weight throw by more than
two feet with a heave of 42-5 to finish fourth. She went over the 40-foot
barrier for the first time January 22, and has broken the school record in the
event in four consecutive meets.
Dubois, the record holder in the pole vault, moved her record up another
one-half inch with a winning vault of 9-7 1/2. That height is an NCAA
provisional qualifying standard for this winter's national championship meet in
March. Dubois had set the previous mark of 9-7 the week before.
Senior Rebecca Reed (Westbrook, Maine) was the only other winner for the
Huskies capturing the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.91 seconds.
The Huskies amassed 126.5 points in the meet that was won by Colby College
with 209 points. Amherst College placed second with 150.5 points.
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday (Feb. 5) traveling to Bates
College in Lewiston, Maine, for the New England Cup IV meet.

Busby, Dubois Set USM Track Records
GORHAM, Maine -- For the third straight week, sophomore Kelly Busby
(Biddeford, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine women's track team has
broken her school record in the 20-lb. weight throw. She accomplished that feat
while competing in the New England Quad Cup meet at the USM Field House Saturday
afternoon.
Also, sophomore Stephanie Dubois (Lewiston, Maine) broke her own record in
the pole vault.
Busby cracked the 40-foot barrier in the weight throw for the first time
on Saturday heaving the weight 40-3.50. She smashed her old mark of 38-7 set
last weekend (January 15).
Dubois raised her pole vault record by three-quarters of an inch from
9-6.75 to 9-7.
The Huskies finished fourth among the six teams competing. Springfield
College won the meet with 158 points, followed by Bowdoin College with 150.25
points, Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 134.25 points, Southern Maine
with 119.25 points, Mt. Holyoke College with 51 points and New York University
with 37.25 points.
