Southern Maine Places Two on All-LEC Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine women's soccer team have been named to the All-Little East Conference second team that was announced Tuesday following voting by the conference's head coaches. Named to the All-LEC second team were senior midfielder Samantha Rennie (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) and junior goalkeeper Mindy Morneault (Winterville, Maine/Fort Kent). They are the first USM players to receive All-LEC recognition since 2005. It is the first time that either player has been named to the All- Conference team. "I'm very excited for both players," commented second-year head coach Lisa Petruccelli. "(Rennie) was a three-year starter in the black where it's difficult to gain recognition. She moved to the midfield this season and had some offensive success that helped this team tremendously. "(Morneault) had to sit out much of last season, and a few matches this season, due to injury. It was exciting to see her come back to perform at the level that made her the conference Rookie of the Year (in 2005)." Rennie, a three-year starter on the back line who moved forward to a central midfield position this season, was the Huskies second leading scorer with a team-leading eight goals, including three game-winning goals, and one assist for 17 points. She had the game-winning goal in the Huskies' wins over the University of Massachusetts Boston, Framingham State College, and Rhode Island College. Rennie was recognized during the season as the LEC Offensive Player of the Week (September 17-23) after assisting on the game-winning goal against the University of Maine Farmington and tallying three goals against UMass Boston. Morneault, the 2005 LEC Rookie of the Year, compiled a 2.27 goals against average, made 87 saves and had a 4-8-0 record with three shutouts in 13 appearances. She posted shutout victories over Framingham State, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Rhode Island College. The win over Rhode Island College clinched a berth in the LEC postseason tournament for the Huskies. The Huskies finished the 2007 season with a 7-11-0 overall record and a 3-4-0 mark (tied for fifth place) in the conference.

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Sarah Swann (Oxford, Conn.) and Nicole Gaudette (Colchester, Conn.) scored goals as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's soccer team kept pace in the Little East Conference with a 2-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at Thomas Nevers Field. The top three teams in the conference all won Saturday and remain separated by three points with two regular-season matches remaining. Morneault made two consecutive fabulous saves late in the first half to keep the match a one-goal contest. From the right post, she dove to her right to knock down a bid by Sarah Revoir (Berlin, Conn.), then scrambled to bat down the rebound shot by Melissa Roy (Wallingford, Conn.) at the left post.
