Sue Frost Leaves USM
GORHAM, Maine -- Sue Frost, head coach of women's lacrosse at the
University of Southern Maine for the past three years, has resigned to accept a
similar position at the University of New England.
This past season, Frost guided the Huskies to an 8-9 overall record and a
berth in the Little East Conference championship game. She was named the LEC
Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to a second place finish with a 5-1
mark, their best ever finish in the conference.
In her three seasons at USM, Frost compiled a 20-28 record and became the
winningest coach in the program's brief history when the Huskies defeated
Plymouth State University on April 22. Over the past three seasons, Frost has
coached eight players to 11 All-Conference citations, including six this past
season, and the past two LEC Rookies of the Year.
"Sue's departure leaves us with a big hole to fill in our women's lacrosse
program and the department in general," commented Al Bean, Director of
Athletics. "She has done an outstanding job in taking the women's lacrosse
program to a new level over the past three years. She will be missed and we
wish her all the best in the future."
Prior to coming to USM in the fall of 2005, Frost served as head coach of
the Binghamton University program during its first three varsity seasons. At
Binghamton, Frost took over a program that was transitioning from a club team to
an NCAA Division I program in the America East Conference. In her three seasons
as the head coach, she compiled a 5-33 overall record, including a 4-10 mark in
the 2004 season.
A 1997 graduate of Marist College (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) with a degree in
English and a minor on psychology, Frost played for the Red Foxes first varsity
team in 1997 participating in all 13 games and served as team captain. She
began her coaching career as an assistant lacrosse coach in the Farmingdale,
N.Y., School District. After spending one season in that capacity, she moved to
Molloy College (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) as head coach of the women's lacrosse
club team.
Before accepting the Binghamton position in 2002, Frost spent one season as
the women's lacrosse coach at Wesley College in Dover, Delaware. She guided the
Wolverines to a 6-5 overall record in her one season there.
Frost also spent one year (2004-2005) at Old Westbury College (Old
Westbury, N.Y.) serving as the Sports Information Director and Director of NCAA
Compliance.

Kristy Kendrick Named LEC Rookie of the Year
Sue Frost Tabbed as Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight year, a member of the University
of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team has been named the Little East
Conference Rookie of the Year. Freshman midfielder Kristy Kendrick (Waterboro,
Maine/Massabesic) has been named the top rookie in the conference for the 2008
season following voting by the head coaches. Commissioner Jonathan Harper
announced the all-conference teams and end-of-the-season awards Wednesday.
Kendrick's selection as the top rookie highlights USM's postseason awards.
Three members of the team, sophomore midfielder Jessica Knight (Alfred,
Maine/Massabesic), the 2007 LEC Co-Rookie of the Year, sophomore defender Erica
Robertson (St. Albans, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) and senior goalie Katie
Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Millbrook) were named to the All-LEC first team.
Junior attack Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine), senior attack Justene
Dorr (Gorham, Maine/Kimball Union) and Kendrick were picked for the all-
conference second team. The six players named to the all-conference team are
the most in the six-year history of the conference, eclipsing the previous high
of four in 2007.
In addition to the player awards, third-year head coach Sue Frost was
picked by her peers as the 2008 Coach of the Year. Frost is the fourth USM head
coach to be named Coach of the Year in the LEC this year, joining Scott
Hutchinson who received the men's cross country and indoor track and field
awards, George Towle who was named the women's indoor track and field recipient
and Bonny Brown-Denico who was picked as the top coach in field hockey.
"The team worked really hard to achieve its goals this season (host a
playoff game and make it to the championship game) and it's wonderful to see
these players recognized by the coaches," commented Frost.
"(Kendrick) is a player who just does not like to lose. Her game grew
throughout the season as she took her individual talents and incorporated them
into what we were trying to do on the field with the other players," continued
Frost.
"(The Coach of the Year award) is a huge honor. I've never received that
kind of recognition before. It feels good to know that my colleagues felt that
way about what we accomplished on the field this year, but the credit goes to
the whole team," said Frost, who has compiled a 20-29 record in her three
seasons at the helm.
Kendrick finished the season as the Huskies second leading scorer with 36
goals and three assists for 39 points. She had 30 ground balls and led the team
with 55 draw controls and 25 caused turnovers.
Knight was the team's leading scorer with a team-high 46 goals and eight
assists for 54 points. A second team All-LEC pick in addition to being Co-
Rookie of the Year in 2007, Knight has tallied 79 goals and dished off 19
assists for 98 points in her first two seasons. She is ranked second all-time
in goals, assists and points.
Robertson and Quartuccio spearheaded the Huskies defense. Robertson had
five goals and a pair of assists for seven points along with 40 ground balls, 34
draw controls and 23 caused turnovers. Quartuccio, who was an All-LEC second
team pick last season and holds virtually every goaltending record in the
program's history, finished the season with a 12.97 goals against average and
made 219 saves. She also had 46 ground balls and nine caused turnovers.
Albert was the team's third leading scorer with 25 goals and a team-leading
11 assists for 36 points, and had 36 ground balls, 20 draw controls and 13
caused turnovers. Dorr, who returned to the sport after a two-year absence,
scored 31 goals and passed off four assists for 35 points. She also had 32
ground balls and nine caused turnovers. Dorr has a season of eligibility
remaining and plans to return next season.
Southern Maine, 8-9 overall and 5-1 in the conference (second place),
finished the season with a school record for wins and advanced to the LEC
championship game for the first time, falling to Eastern Connecticut State
University in the final.
