Bellemore, Hutchinson, Landry and Oliver Named Women's Track Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West HS) and Jennifer Oliver (Danvers, Mass./Danvers HS), and juniors Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth [Mass.] HS) and Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells HS), have been named captains for the 2006-07 University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team. Veteran head coach George Towle made the announcement earlier this week as the Huskies returned from their winter holiday break to prepare for their home- opening USM Women's Invitational meet today (1:00 p.m.). "All four captains have played a major role in (the program's) success. They'll now be asked to invest even more of themselves to help guide a young team (27 freshmen and sophomores on the 38-member squad)," commented Towle, who has led the track and field and cross country programs at USM since their inception. Towle went on to say, "Bellemore is one of the most accomplished athletes in the history of the program. She is best when the chips are on the table. (Hutchinson) is a very versatile and talented athlete. She is a real leader on the track and in the classroom. (Oliver) is the veteran presence among a dozen young middle distance runners, and will be counted on to set the pace. And (Landry) made a mark in the dash, hurdles and the 200 at the State meet last winter. Like the other captains, she is always willing to pitch in where needed at meets." Bellemore competes primarily in the pole vault, 55-meter hurdles, and long jump. Hutchinson covers middle distance running events, Landry runs sprints (55 and 200 meters) and hurdles, and Oliver is a middle distance specialist. The first indoor track and field All-American (2006) in the program's history, Bellemore has had a much decorated career. In addition to being an All-American, she is a three-time Little East Conference champion in the pole vault, and earned all-conference honors in the 55-meter hurdles three times. During her career, Bellemore has been selected as the LEC Field Athlete of the Week eight times. She holds the school record indoors in the pole vault (11-9 3/4) set last winter at the NEIcAAA New England Championships. A transfer from Yale University, Hutchinson earned All-ECAC and All-LEC honors in her only campaign with the Huskies. She was All-ECAC in the 500 meters and 4 x 800-meter relay, and All-LEC in the 600 meters and the triple jump. Hutchinson won the LEC triple jump last winter with a jump of 35-3. One of the Huskies' top sprinters, Landry has collected ALL-LEC citations the past two seasons in the 55-meter hurdles, and also in the 55-meter dash last year. Landry was named the LEC Track Athlete of the Week (week of January 30- February 5) after earning 26 points at the State Championships meet. Landry won the 55-meter dash (7.58 seconds) and placed second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.02) and 200 meters (27.45). A four-year member of the Huskies' cross country team as well, Oliver earned her first indoor All-LEC honor last season in the 3,000 meters. She also picked up All-LEC honors outdoors last spring in the 5,000 meters. The remainder of the Huskies indoor season schedule is as follows: January 20, at URI Invitational (4:00 p.m.); January 27, USM Co-Ed Invitational (1:00 p.m.); February 2, at State Championships at Bowdoin (6:00 p.m.); and February 10, at New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships at Tufts University (tba).
