                      Bellemore Earns All-American Honors

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) of the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team earned 
Division III All-American honors in the pole vault Saturday at the 2006 NCAA 
Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field National Championships 
being held at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
     Bellemore cleared 3.55 meters (11-7 3/4) on her second attempt to finish 
seventh among the 15 competitors that made the championship field.  Bellemore is 
the first USM women's indoor track and field athlete to earn All-American 
honors.
     Senior Stephanie Barnes of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the 
event by clearing 3.85 meters (12-7 1/2).
     In competition Friday night, USM senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) 
finished eighth in her trials heat of the mile run.  Marzouk finished with a 
time of 5:14.05.  She did not advance to Saturday's finals.
     The Huskies will open their 2006 outdoor track and field season March 29 
when they compete at the USAT Invitational in Clermont, Fla.

   USM Sends Three to NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Three student-athletes from the University of Southern 
Maine men's and women's indoor track and field teams have made the field for 
this weekend's 22nd Annual NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Indoor Track and 
Field Championships being hosted at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.
     According to the list of qualifiers released Monday morning, making the 
field from the women's team are junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) 
in the pole vault and senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) in the mile 
run.  Getting into the field on the men's side is senior Mike Bunker (Bucksport, 
Maine) in the 5,000 meters.
     Bellemore, who is ranked sixth among the 15 entrants in the pole vault, 
qualified for the championships on the strength of her performance February 24 
at the NEIcAAA New England Indoor Track Championships where she cleared 3.60 
meters (11-9 3/4).
     Marzouk, who is the final entrant to make the field of 16 in the mile, 
qualified based upon her converted time of 5:04.22 at the NEIcAAA New England 
Championships.
     Bunker, an All-American last spring outdoors in the 3,000-meter 
steeplechase, is ranked 11th among the 13 entrants in the 5K based upon his 
converted time of 14:42.88 run January 27 at the Terrier Classic meet held at 
Boston University.
     Bellemore and Marzouk are the first USM women's track athletes to go to the 
NCAA Indoor championships since Amy Swanberg participated in the pole vault in 
2000.  Marzouk will run in a preliminary race Friday evening.  The championship 
race for the mile is Saturday afternoon.  Bellemore competes in the pole vault 
Saturday morning.
     Bunker is the first athlete from the men's team to go to the championships 
since Wil Snyder in 2004.  The men's 5,000-meter race is scheduled for Saturday 
evening.

              Southern Maine Finishes Sixth at ECAC Championships
       Bellemore Wins Pole Vault;  DMR Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA's

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./Manchester 
West) won the pole vault and placed fifth in the 55-meter hurdles to lead the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team to a 
sixth place finish at the 2006 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Indoor 
Track and Field Championships held this weekend at Ursinus College in 
Collegeville, Penn.
     The Huskies accumulated 51 points to finish sixth among the 38 teams that 
scored points in the meet.  College at Oneonta won the team title with 101.50 
points, followed by SUNY Brockport with 77 points.  Rounding out the top five 
teams were Lincoln University with 76 points, The College of New Jersey with 
73.50 points and Dickinson College with 62 points.
     Bellemore won the pole vault by clearing 3.52 meters (11-6 1/2) and took 
fifth place in the 55-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.81 seconds in 
the finals.  For finishing among the top eight in each event, Bellemore earns 
All-ECAC honors.
     Two school records were set during the meet.  Freshman Stephanie Jette 
(Lovell, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) lowered her mark in the 1,000 meters by three 
tenths of a second with a time of 3:03.25 to finish third.  The distance medley 
relay team of Jette, sophomores Pam Yomoah (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and 
Sara Cannon (Sanford, Maine), and senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) set 
a school record in Friday night's competition with its third place time of 
12:18.44.  That time also provisionally qualified the relay for the NCAA 
Division III championships.
     Others earning All-ECAC honors included Marzouk who placed second in the 
mile with a time of 5:10.66 and seventh in the 800 meters with a time of 
2:25.35.  Sophomore Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth) earned a fourth 
place finish in the 500 meters with a time of 1:20.75. Cannon took seventh place 
in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:06.50.
     The 4 x 800-meter relay team of Marzouk, Cannon, Hutchinson and Jette 
finished second with its time of 9:44.24.
     The field for next weekend's NCAA championships will be announced Monday.  
USM has three provisional qualifiers (Bellemore - pole vault; Marzouk - mile; 
distance medley relay).

################################################################################ Saturday, February 25, 2006 Huskies Set Three School Records at NEIcAAA Championships GORHAM, Maine -- Three school records fell Friday evening as the University of Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team competed at the NEIcAAA (New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association) Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships being held at the Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University. Junior standout Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) raised her record in the pole vault to 3.60 meters (11-9 3/4) to finish fifth in the event. The height bettered her old standard by two centimeters (three-quarters of an inch) and improved her NCAA Division III provisional qualifying status. By finishing in the top eight, Bellemore earned All-New England honors. Senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) lowered her school record in the mile with her NCAA provisional qualifying time of 5:03.72. Marzouk carved 5.12 seconds off her old record set on the same track two weeks earlier at the Valentine's Invitational meet. The distance medley relay quartet of freshman Stephanie Jette (Lovell, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), sophomores Pam Yomoah (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and Sara Cannon (Sanford, Maine), and Marzouk shattered their seven-week old record by more than 13 seconds with their time of 12:24.09. That time is less than two seconds off the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Others competing at the meet included sophomore Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth) who turned in a time of 1:20.89 in her trials heat of the 500 meters, and sophomore Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) who competed in the 55- meter hurdles. Landry came in with a time of 9.23 seconds in her trial heat. Neither advanced to Saturday's finals. The Huskies hit the road next weekend (March 3-4) traveling to Ursinus College (Collegeville, Pa.) for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships. For complete results, go to: http://www.usm.maine.edu/athl/Women's_Indoor_Track/witresults.html ################################################################################ Monday, February 20, 2006 Bellemore and Haggerty Earn Little East Conference Weekly Honors GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) and sophomore Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's and men's indoor track and field teams have each been named the Little East Conference Field Athlete of the Week for their respective sports for the week of February 13-19. It is the first such honor for Haggerty this season, while Bellemore is earning LEC weekly accolades for the fourth time. Bellemore was named the LEC Field Athlete of the Week previously on December 12, January 17 and January 30. Competing at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference and New England Division III Championships, Bellemore continued to perform well in her trio of events. At the Alliance/LEC meet, Bellemore swept the pole vault and long jump events as she has marks of 11-7 (3.53 meters) and 17-4 (5.28 meters) respectively. She also competed in the 55-meter hurdles, placing second in a time of 8.93 seconds. Her efforts helped lead the Huskies to their sixth consecutive sweep of the Alliance and LEC titles. At the New England Division III Championships, Bellemore earned Division III All-New England honors by placing in the same three events. She finished third in the pole vault and sixth in the long jump and 55-meter hurdles. In the pole vault, Bellemore earned her third place finish with a mark of 3.37 meters (11-0 3/4). In the long jump, Bellemore landed a leap of 5.05 meters (16-7) while running the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.95 meters. Haggerty competed in the pole vault at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference and the New England Division III Championships last week. At the Alliance/LEC meet, Haggerty captured his second consecutive title with a height of 14-0 (4.26 meters) to help the Huskies to a third place finish. Later in the week, Haggerty won the pole vault at the New England Division III Championships with a mark of 13-6 (4.11 meters). Both the USM men's and women's indoor track and field teams return to action Friday and Saturday (February 24-25) at the NEIcAAA Indoor Championships hosted by Boston University. Events are scheduled begin at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. ################################################################################ Saturday, February 18, 2006 Bellemore Leads USM to 11th Place Finish at N.E. Division III Championships Jette, 4 x 800-Meter Relay Set School Records MEDFORD, Mass. -- Junior multi-event standout Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) placed in three events to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 11th place finish at the 2006 New England Division III Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at Tufts University on Saturday. The Huskies scored 33 points to place 11th among the 22 teams that scored in the event. Williams College placed first with 154 points, while Tufts placed second with 122.33 points and Amherst College grabbed the third spot with 66 points. Bellemore placed third in the pole vault and placed sixth in both the long jump and 55-meter hurdles to account for 12 of the Huskies' 33 points. Bellemore cleared 11-0 3/4 (3.37 meters) in the pole vault to earn the third spot. She claimed sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 16-7 (5.05 meters). Earlier in the meet, Bellemore finished sixth in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.95 seconds. Freshman Kasey Connor (Kittery, Maine/Traip Academy) scored 3026 points in the five-event pentathlon to take third place. Connor is the fourth competitor in the history of the USM women's indoor program to break the 3,000-point barrier in the pentathlon. Classmate Steph Jette (Lovell, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) placed fifth in the 1,000-meter run with a school record time of 3:03.55. Jette broke the mark of 3:03.63 set by senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) at the Alliance Championships this past Monday. Also scoring for the Huskies were sophomore Pam Yomoah (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) and freshman Caitlin Handcock (Cumberland, Maine/Greely). Yomoah placed eighth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.11. Handcock earned a seventh place finish in the high jump by clearing 5-1 3/4 (1.57 meters). Southern Maine's 4 x 200-meter relay and 4 x 800-meter relay teams each placed for the Huskies. The 4 x 200 team comprised of freshman Lora Bonsaint (Kittery, Maine/Traip Academy) and sophomores Mindy Mondoux (Berwick, Maine/Noble), Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) and Yomoah placed fourth with a time of 1:49.82. The 4 x 800 team of Jette, sophomores Sara Cannon (Sanford, Maine) and Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth), and Marzouk placed sixth with a school record time of 9:42.78, breaking the old mark set two years ago by more than 12 seconds. The Huskies ran away in the eight-team Alliance field, amassing 258 points to outdistance second place Keene State College which earned 154 points. Westfield State College finished third with 102 points. In the five-team Little East Conference scoring, the Huskies earned 262.50 points. Keene State took second with 156 points, and Eastern Connecticut State University was third with 42 points. Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) won two individual titles in the Alliance meet, earning the top spot in the pole vault and the long jump. She also took second place in the 55-meter hurdles. Bellemore won the pole vault by clearing 11-7 and the long jump with a personal best leap of 17-4. She had a time of 8.93 seconds in the finals of the 55-meter hurdles. Other Alliance meet winners included sophomore Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth) in the triple jump with an effort of 35-3 and senior Abbey Ahearn (Paxton, Mass./St. Peter Marian) in the 20-lb. weight throw with a throw of 43-7 1/2. The Huskies also took the top spot in the 4 x 200-meter relay. Setting school records during the meet were sophomore Josie Marshall [South Portland, Maine/Washington Irving (WV)] in the 55-meter dash with her time of 7.55 seconds, good for second place, senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) in the 1,000 meters with her second place time of 3:03.63, and freshman Caitlin Handcock (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) who cleared 5-4 in the high jump to place third. The championship meet has been rescheduled for Monday (February 13) at 4:00 p.m. The meet venue has also changed and will now be hosted by the University of Southern Maine at the Costello Sports Complex on Gorham campus. ################################################################################ Monday, February 6, 2006 Landry Named Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team has been named the Little East Conference Track Athlete of the week for the week of January 30 through February 5. It is the first time this season, and the first time in her career, that Landry, a 2005 All-Little East and All-New England Alliance selection, has earned the honor. Landry competed in three events Friday night (February 3) at the State of Maine Championships hosted by Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. She helped the Huskies to a first place finish in the four-team meet with a total of 178 points. Bowdoin College was second with 147 points, third place went to Bates with 130 points, and Colby College placed fourth with 121 points. Landry won the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.58 and placed second in both the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.02 and the 200-meters with a time of 27.45. Landry's efforts yielded 26 points for Southern Maine. Her time in the 55-meter dash was just 0.01 second shy of the school record. Southern Maine returns to action Sunday, February 12, when it travels to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston for the annual New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships. USM has won the Alliance and LEC titles for the past five years. ################################################################################ Friday, February 3, 2006 Southern Maine Win State Title For Second Straight Year LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) and sophomore Pam Yomoah (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) each won a pair of events to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team successfully defend its title at the 2006 State of Maine Championships held Friday night at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. The Huskies took the team title earning 178 points to edge out Bowdoin College which finished with 147 points. Bates took third with 130 points and Colby College was fourth with 121 points. Bellemore won the pole vault for the second straight year by clearing 11-9 (3.58 meters) to break her old school record (11-1 3/4) set six days ago by more than seven inches, and significantly improved upon her NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She also won the 55-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.88 seconds in the finals. Bellemore took second place finishes in the long jump with a leap of 16-8 1/2 (5.09 meters) and the triple jump with a personal best effort of 35-1 (10.69 meters). In the four events, Bellemore earned 36 points for the Huskies. Yomoah took first place finishes in the 200 meters with a time of 27.11 seconds and the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.25. She also ran a leg on the Huskies’ 4 x 400-meter relay unit that finished third. Other individual winners for the Huskies included freshman Caitlin Handcock (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) who set a school record with a jump of 5-2 1/4 (1.58 meters) to win the high jump, sophomore Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth) in the triple jump with a leap of 35-5 1/4 (10.80 meters), sophomore Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.58 seconds, and freshman Stephanie Jette (Lovell, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) in the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:08.87. The Huskies’ 4 x 200-meter quartet also won its event with a time of 1:53.03. Landry earned a pair of second place finishes, taking second behind Bellemore in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.02 seconds, and second behind Yomoah in the 200 meters with a time of 27.45 seconds. Sophomore Josie Marshall [South Portland, Maine/Washington Irving (WV)] gave the Huskies a one-two finish in the 55-meter dash taking second place behind Landry with her time of 7.66 seconds. Southern Maine returns to action on Sunday, February 12, when it travels to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston for the annual New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by the conference office. The accolade marks the third time this season that Bellemore, a multi-event standout for the Huskies, has been named the LEC Field Athlete of the week. Bellemore also picked up the honor on December 12 and January 17. Bellemore aided the Huskies' first-place finish at the USM Coed Invitational on Saturday (January 28), competing in four events and earning a first place finish in two of them. Southern Maine claimed the top spot in the meet with a score of 216 points, outdistancing second-place Bates College that followed with 164 points. Bellemore, the 2005 Division III New England champion in the pole vault, placed first in the event with a school-record mark of 3.39 meters (11-1 3/4), besting the previous mark of 3.37 meters (11-1) set by Nikki Freeman in January 2005. The vault also provisionally qualified Bellemore for the NCAA Division III National Championships in March. Last season, Bellemore, earned numerous honors in the pole vault, including All-Little East, All-New England Alliance, Division III All-New England, and All-ECAC awards. Bellemore also placed first in the 55-meter hurdles for the Huskies with her time of 9.00 seconds. In her other two events, Bellemore placed third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.08 meters (33-1) and fourth in the long jump with a mark of 4.80 meters (15-9). Bellemore and the Huskies return to action Friday (February 3) at Bates College for the State of Maine Championships. Events are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. ################################################################################ Saturday, January 28, 2006 Southern Maine Takes First Place at USM Coed Invitational GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) won both the 55-meter hurdles and pole vault events, and took third in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team to a first place finish at the USM Coed Invitational Saturday at the Costello Sports Complex on the Gorham campus. Southern Maine took the top spot with 216 points. USM was followed by Bates College in second place with 164 points. Smith College placed third in the six-team field with 81 points, and was followed by Emmanuel College (58 points), UMass Dartmouth (48 points) and Rhode Island College (40 points) in fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively. Bellemore, a multi-event standout, won the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 9.00 seconds. In the pole vault, she cleared a height of 11-1 3/4 (3.39 meters) to earn the win. Bellemore's vault set a new school record, besting the previous record of 11-1 set by Nikki Freeman at Tufts in January 2003. The vault also provisionally qualified Bellemore for the NCAA Division III National Championships in March. In the triple jump, Bellemore completed a 1-2-3 sweep for the Huskies with a leap of 33-1. Southern Maine sophomore Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) won the event with a leap of 33-7 3/4 and sophomore Mindy Mondoux (Berwick, Maine/Noble) placed second with a distance of 33-2 1/2. In the long jump, Bellemore was one of seven USM athletes to score a point, placing fourth with a jump of 15-9. Rhode Island College senior Dana Skorupa (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) won the event with a leap of 17-0 1/2, and was followed by USM freshman Kasey Connor (Kittery, Maine/Traip Academy) in second place with a jump of 16-1 1/2. Hutchinson also earned a first place finish for USM in the 600-meter run, clocking a time of 1:44.12, while senior Lindsay Kuhn (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) and sophomore Sarah Cannon (Sanford, Maine/Sanford) each were event winners for Southern Maine. Kuhn won the 400 meters in a time of 1:05.04, while Cannon placed first in the mile with a time of 5:30.55. Events are scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. For complete results, go to: http://www.usm.maine.edu/athl/Women's_Indoor_Track/witresults.html ################################################################################ Saturday, January 21, 2006 Huskies Third at USCGA Indoor Invitational Marzouk Sets School Record in the 3,000 Meters NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Senior Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vt./Hartford) set a school record in the 3,000 meters Saturday afternoon to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies womenís indoor track and field team to a third place finish at the United States Coast Guard Academy Indoor Invitational in New London, Conn. Marzouk covered the 3,000-meter distance in a time of 10:29.67 to win the event and break the school record of 10:36.94 set by Kristy Wechter in February 2003. Marzoukís time was more than 19 seconds better than her previous personal best. The only other individual event winner for the Huskies was freshman Caitlin Handcock (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) who took the top spot in the high jump after clearing 1.52 meters (4-11 3/4). Sophomore Mindy Mondoux (Berwick, Maine/Noble) had a good day taking a second place finish in the long jump with an effort of 4.67 meters (15-4) and thirds in the 55-meter dash (7.92 seconds) and the triple jump (9.73 meters, 31- 11 1/4). Others earning second place finishes were sophomore Sara Cannon (Sanford, Maine) in the 800 meters with a time of 2:27.76, senior Lindsay Kuhn (South Burlington, Vt.) in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.52 seconds, and sophomore Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine/Falmouth) in the triple jump with a leap of 9.85 meters (32-2 3/4). Bellemore aided the Huskies to a first-place finish at the USM Women's Invitational. Southern Maine claimed the top spot in the meet with a score of 196.5 points outdistancing second-place Bates College that followed with 107 points. Bellemore, a 2005 All-New England performer, competed in three events for Southern Maine, placing first in each of them to pace the Huskies. She set a personal record in the long jump with a leap of 17-3 1/2. Bellemore then won the pole vault with a mark of 10-7. She took to the track and placed first in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.20 in the finals. Last season, Bellemore earned Division III All-New England honors in honors in the long jump and pole vault. She also earned all-conference honors in four events, including the pole vault, long jump, triple jump and 55-meter hurdles. "Melissa continues to show steady improvement in her events," noted veteran USM head coach George Towle. "Her performance in the long jump was a significant personal record and bodes well for her continued success this season. The Huskies will participate in the five-team meet along with the host school, Connecticut College, Eastern Connecticut State University and Kings Point. ################################################################################ Saturday, January 14, 2006 Huskies Win USM Women's Invitational GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) won three events and sophomore Christa Hutchinson (Gorham, Maine) won a pair to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's indoor track and field team to the team title at the 2006 USM Women's Invitational held Saturday afternoon at the USM Field House. The Huskies took the team title by garnering 196.5 points to outdistance second place Bates College which earned 107 points. Colby College, with 94.5 points, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, with 90 points, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, with 88 points, and Mount Holyoke College with 55 points round out the six-team field. Bellemore won the long jump with a career best leap of 17-3, the pole vault by clearing 10-7, and the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.20 seconds in the finals. Bellemore lead a USM sweep of the first five places in the long jump. Hutchinson won the 600 meters with her time of 1:43.45 and the triple jump with an effort of 34-2. Other individual winners for Southern Maine included sophomore Pam Yomoah (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little HS) in the 200 meters with a time of 27.49 seconds, and freshman Caitlin Handcock (Cumberland, Maine) in the high jump by clearing 5-0. Southern Maine finished eighth in the 16-team event with 19 points. Host Dartmouth College placed first overall scoring 85 points. The Big Green were followed by Williams College (77 points), the University of Maine (63 points), and the University of Massachusetts Lowell (60 points). Bellemore, a 2005 All-ECAC and Division III All-New England selection, placed seventh in the pole vault for the Huskies with a vault of 10 feet six inches. Bellemore also competed in the long jump placing 16th with a leap of 15 feet 4 1/4 inches. In the triple jump, both Mondoux and Poliquin fared well for the Huskies placing sixth and eighth respectively. Mondoux took a sixth place finish with a jump of 33 feet 11 1/2 inches, while Poliquin placed eighth with a jump of 33 feet 7 1/4 inches. Jette, a standout for the Huskies during the 2005 cross country season, placed ninth in the 800-meter run with a solid time of 2:24.90. Bellemore earned the women's Field Athlete of the Week honors. In her team's season-opening USM Preseason Invitational, Bellemore competed in two field events, placing first in each. She set a personal best in the pole vault competition with a mark of 11-0, and then followed with another first place finish capturing the long jump with a leap of 16-4 1/4. Bellemore, an All-ECAC and Division III All-New England performer last season in the pole vault, also competed in the 55-meter hurdles, placing second in the event with a time of 9.46 seconds. Bunker took men's Track Athlete of the Week honors for the Huskies by setting a school-record in the 5000 meters at the USM Preseason Invitational. Bunker, a 2005 NCAA Division III Outdoor All-American in the steeplechase, took first place in the event covering the 5000-meter distance in a time of 15:10.04. Landry placed first in the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.76 while taking the top spot in the 200-meter dash in a time of 27.89. Senior captain Sara Marzouk (Wilder, Vermont/Hartford) cruised to a first place finish in the 3000-meter run in 10:48.69, besting second place finisher Annie Monjar of Bowdoin College (11:09.46) by nearly 13 seconds. Marzouk also anchored the Huskies first place 4 x 800 meter relay team that finished the race in a time of 10:12.59. Junior Melissa Bellemore (Manchester, N.H./West) fared well in her season- opening field events, narrowly missing a NCAA provisional qualifying height (3.38 meters), placing first in the pole vault with a vault of 11-0 (3.35 meters). Each of the three brings a wealth of talent to the program which will be looking to earn its seventh straight Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships in February. USM has claimed the LEC annual championship dating back to the 1999-2000 season. "Each of these three are talented athletes," noted veteran head coach George Towle. "This season, it is essential to the team's success that these three seniors take their roles as captains seriously. We are asking that they be more than role models through their actions and work ethic and to take an active role in the team's development." Ahearn, who competes in the throwing events for the Huskies, earned All-New England Alliance honors in the 20-lb. weight throw during the 2004-2005 season. At the LEC/Alliance championship, Ahearn placed fourth in the event with a throw of 41-5 1/2. A multi-event standout, Kuhn garnered numerous honors last season as a junior, including All-ECAC, Division III All-New England, All-New England Alliance and All-Little East Conference accolades. Kuhn earned All-ECAC honors in the pentathlon finishing sixth at the 2005 ECAC Division III Championships with 2908 points. Marzouk, who is coming off of a solid cross-country season, returns for the Huskies to compete in the distance events. Last season, Marzouk earned All- ECAC, All-New England Alliance and All-Little East Conference honors. At the ECAC Championships, Marzouk placed eighth in the 800-meter event in a time of 2:22.39 and finished fourth in the 1500-meters clocking a time of 4:47.97. At the LEC/Alliance championships, Marzouk placed in the top three in three events, including a first place finish in the 3000-meters with a time of 11:11.05. Southern Maine opens its 2005-2006 indoor track and field season Saturday (December 10) at home in the USM Preseason Invitational. Events are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. Following the holiday break, the Huskies will be in full swing, opening the month of January on the road at the Dartmouth Relays (January 6; 1:00 p.m.). The Huskies will host the USM Women's Invitational (January 14; 1:00 p.m.), then travel to Connecticut for the Coast Guard Invitational (January 21; 12:00 p.m.). The Huskies close out the month returning home for the USM Co-Ed Invitational (January 28; 1:00 p.m.). In February, Southern Maine will compete in the State of Maine Championships (February 3; 6:00 p.m.) hosted by Bates College in Lewiston. The Huskies will defend their string of six consecutive Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston (February 12; tba).
