Southern Maine Picks Women's Indoor Track and Field Captains

GORHAM, Maine - Five members of the University of Southern Maine Husky
women's indoor track and field team have been tabbed as captains of the 2004-2005
season. The talented veteran quintet of seniors Kim Brewer (Bristol,
Vermont/Mount Abraham Union), Lindsay Davis (North Berwick, Maine/Noble), Kristen
Ingalls (Raymond, Maine/Windham), Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook)
and Melissa White (Palmyra, Maine/Nokomis) will lead the Huskies talent-laden 29-
person roster.
The Huskies return 15 athletes from last season's highly successful and
competitive team, looking to defend both its Little East Conference and New
England Alliance Championships. The four-time defending Little East Conference
champion Huskies will also look to improve upon their respectable 15th place
finish at the New England Division III Championships.
Brewer, Ingalls and Sinclair all served as captains last season for the
Huskies while Davis and White are first-time captains.
"This group of athletes are well-suited for their leadership roles," noted
veteran head coach George Towle, who is in his eighth indoor track and field
season. "Between the five of them, they cover all of the events within the team.
Over their four years as part of our team, they have continually achieved a high
level of success within their events. They are a major reason why Southern Maine
has won the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships
consecutively since 2001, and they will play a major role in our goal of
continuing that streak this season."
A versatile and highly decorated athlete, Brewer competes in numerous events
ranging from sprints to jumps. As a junior, Brewer earned All-ECAC and All-New
England honors in the pentathlon, as well as All-New England recognition in the
55-meter hurdles, and the high, triple and long jump events. Brewer also earned
both All-New England Alliance and Little East Conference honors in the 200-meters,
55-hurdles and the high, triple and long jump events.
At the 2004 ECAC Division III Championships, Brewer placed second overall in
the pentathlon finishing with 3,104 points. Brewer also established a school-
record in the same event at the New England Open Championships, scoring 3,136
points for a fifth place finish.
Davis, who is also a member of the cross country team, competes in the middle
distance events for the Huskies. She figured heavily in the team's scoring last
season earning All-New England Alliance and All-Little East Conference honors in
the 600-meter run.
Competing in the sprint events, Ingalls is an All-New England and All-Little
East Conference performer in both the 200 and 400-meters events. Ingalls scored
points in five out of the nine scoring meets she competed in, including 14-point
performances in the Little East and New England Alliance championship meets.
A field athlete, Sinclair will be counted upon to repeat her excellent
performance in the throwing events for the Huskies this season. As a junior,
Sinclair earned both All-New England Alliance and All-Little East Conference
accolades in the 20-lb weight throw, placing first overall in the conference
championship with a distance of 45-5 1/2.
Also competing in the field events, White returns to reprise her stellar
junior season that saw her earn All-Little East Conference and All-New England
Alliance honors in the 20-lb weight throw. White finished third at the Little
East Conference and All-New England Alliance championships with a distance of 40-4
1/4.
The Huskies opened their 2004-2005 campaign last night at the Bates
Invitational. That is the lone event of the first semester. Following semester
exams and the holiday break, Southern Maine returns to action in January at the
University of Rhode Island New Year's Classic (Jan. 7, 1 p.m.) and then hosts its
own USM Women's Invitational (Jan. 15, 1 p.m.). The Huskies travel to Connecticut
for a dual meet with Coast Guard (Jan. 22, 12 p.m.) before returning to Gorham to
close out the month of January hosting the USM Co-Ed Invitational (Jan. 29, 1
p.m.).
The Huskies begin the championship portion of their schedule in February
hosting the State of Maine Championship (Feb. 4, 6 p.m.) and the Little East
conference and New England Alliance Championships (Feb. 12, 1 p.m.). Southern
Maine will then close out the season at the New England Division III Championship
(Feb. 18-19), the New England Open Championships (Feb. 25-26) and at the ECAC
Championships (Mar. 4-5).
