Two Southern Maine Pole Vaulters Earn Little East Conference Honors

GORHAM, Maine - University of Southern Maine junior Wil Snyder (Saco,
Maine/San Benito [Calif.]) and freshman Teryn Clark (Winthrop, Maine) have been
named the Little East Conference Field Performers of the Week after winning the
pole vault at the respective Men's and Women's Indoor State of Maine Championships
held this past weekend.
Snyder cleared 15-8.75 to break a 28-year-old meet record and eclipse his own
school record in the event. The former meet record of 15-7 was set by Tim
Ledbetter of Bowdoin College at the 1976 State Championships. In recognition of
his accomplishment, Snyder was named the Outstanding Field Performer of the meet.
Snyder, who has competed in four meets with the Huskies, has now broken the
school record on three occasions. He initially set the record in his Southern
Maine debut when he cleared 15-3.75 at the Brandeis performance on January 17. The
former school record of 14-9 was established by Nick Joy in February of 2000.
Snyder later cleared 15-5 to break his own school record at the USM Co-Ed
Invitational on January 31.
His efforts helped the Huskies accrue 87 points and finish third at the meet.
Bates captured the team title with 212.75 points, while Bowdoin was second
(162.25) and Colby was third (51).
Clark, who has demonstrated steady progress throughout the course of the
indoor campaign, registered a personal best of 9-1 at the State Meet. Her
performance enabled the team to compile 104 points and finish in fourth place just
behind Bates (120). Bowdoin took the overall team title with 188.50 points, and
Colby (167.50) was the runner up.
Among the team's most consistent scorers all year, Clark began the year by
clearing 8-0 to finish sixth at a tri-meet hosted by MIT. She later cleared 8-6 to
place second at the USM Invitational, before establishing her former personal best
of 9-0.25 to finish fifth at the Tufts Invitational. Most recent, Clark finished
fourth at the USM Co-Ed Invitational after clearing 8-6.
Southern Maine will return to action this weekend when it hosts the joint
Alliance/LEC Championships on Saturday afternoon (1:00 pm).

Invitational. Colby College captured the overall team title with 161.50 points,
while Bates was second with 142 points, and Southern Maine tallied 132 points.
Snyder, who was making his first competitive appearance for the Huskies after
transferring from Hartnell Community College in Salinas, Calif., cleared 15-3 3/4
inches (4.67 meters) in the pole vault to shatter the school record and eclipse
the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Division III Championships. The
former mark of 14-9 had been set by Nick Joy at the 2000 Open New England
Championships.
The lone Husky to win an individual event, Snyder helped Southern Maine to an
impressive second-place performance at the competitive seven-team Brandeis
Invitational. Bowdoin College captured the overall team title with 175 points,
while the Huskies followed with 92 points.
The men's and women's indoor track and field teams return to action this
Saturday, when the men partake in the Bowdoin College Invitational, while the
women will travel to the Tufts University Invitational.

Three Named USM Women's Indoor Track Captains
Huskies Open Indoor Season at Home Saturday

GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
women's indoor track and field team have been named captains for the upcoming
2003-2004 indoor season that opens this Saturday.
Veteran women's track and field head coach George Towle announced that
juniors Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt./Mount Abraham Union HS), Kristen Ingalls
(Raymond, Maine/Windham HS) and Kristen Sinclair (Manchester, Maine/Maranacook HS)
would lead the Huskies this winter. This is the first time that Brewer, Ingalls
and Sinclair have served as a team captain.
"All three athletes have a good understanding of the sport and what it takes
to get better. As captains, it's our expectation that they will pass this on to
the younger athletes," commented Towle.
Brewer, the defending New England Division III champion in the pentathlon,
won four events (200 meters, 55-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump) at last
year's Little East Conference indoor championships and three New England Alliance
titles (55-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump). She also earned All-Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in the pentathlon for her second place finish.
One of the finest multi-event competitors in the history of the Huskies'
track and field program, Brewer presently holds school records indoors in the 200
meters (26.84 seconds), high jump (5-2) and the pentathlon (3,118 points), and is
a member of three record relay teams. She went to the NCAA outdoor championships
last spring and competed in the heptathlon.
"(Brewer) is one of the most versatile athletes in New England. She has
accomplished some nice things in her first two years, but still has plenty of room
for growth, and she loves to compete," Towle said
Ingalls is one of the team's top returning sprinters. She earned All-Little
East honors last winter in the 55-meter hurdles, and All-Alliance citations in the
55-meter hurdles and 200 meters. She ran the leadoff leg of the championship 4 x
200-meter relay quartets at the State Championships and the LEC/Alliance
Championships. She is a member of two record relay teams.
"(Ingalls) brings a positive attitude that sets the tone for the entire team.
She has been a pleasant surprise during her first two seasons. She keeps getting
better through hard work in the weight room and on the track," added Towle.
Sinclair, an NCAA qualifier last spring in the javelin, will compete
primarily in the 20-lb. weight throw and the shot put during the indoor season.
Her best mark in the 20-lb. weight last winter was 12.55 meters (41-2 1/4) at the
USM Coed Invitational meet.
"(Sinclair), like Brewer, competed at the (NCAA) outdoor nationals last
spring. She's a great person to have at practice because of her upbeat attitude
and dedication to the sport. And she wants to get better," said Towle about the
school record holder outdoors in the javelin (130-7).
The Huskies open their 2003-04 season Saturday (December 6) when they host
M.I.T. at the USM Field House. The meet begins with field events at 1:00 p.m.
with running events starting at 2:00 p.m.
After Saturday's meet, the Huskies will be off until after exams and the
holidays. They will return to action on January 11 when they travel to the
Dartmouth College Relays.
The remainder of the 2003-04 schedule is as follows: January 17, USM
Invitational (1:00); January 24, at Tufts Invitational (11:00 a.m.); and January
31, USM Co-Ed Invitational (1:00).
     Also February 6, at the State Championships at Bowdoin College (6:00);
February 14, New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships at USM
(1:00); February 21, at the New England Division III Championships at M.I.T.
(11:00); and February 27-28, at the New England Open Championships at Boston
University.
The 2003-04 season concludes March 5-6 with the ECAC Division III
Championships at Bowdoin. Should any competitors qualify to the 2004 NCAA
Division III National Championships, that meet takes place March 12-13 at the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
