she placed fourth (10-6).
The school record holder outdoors (11-0) and ranked second indoors (10-7),
Swanberg was a provisional qualifier for the 2003 NCAA indoor and outdoor national

USM'S Nikki Freeman Named LEC Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine - University of Southern Maine senior captain Nikki Freeman
(Whitefield, Maine) was named the Little East Conference Field Athlete of the Week
after eclipsing her own school record in the pole vault.
She becomes the second consecutive Southern Maine athlete to win the award,
as sophomore Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) was cited for her performance a week ago.
Keene State College standout Mary Proulx was recognized as the league's Track
Athlete of the Week.
Freeman cleared 11-1 to win the pole vault at the Tufts Invitational and
improve her former record of 11-0 which she set in December at the MIT
Invitational. Her efforts helped the Huskies tally 53.5 points to place seventh in
the 11-team field.
Her performance is currently tied for seventh on this year's national
performance list and it surpasses the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA
Championships to be held on March 14-15 at DePauw University in DePauw, Ind.
Should Freeman qualify for the NCAA Championships, she would become only the third
Husky to compete at the event. Current teammate Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine)
participated in the pole vault in 2000, while Angela Whelchel ran the 400 meters
at the 1991 championships.
On the year, Freeman has now made a trio of entries in the University record
book. In addition to her record in the pole vault, she was a member of the
4 x 200-meter relay team that recorded the third fastest time in school history
(1:50.30), while she additionally registered the fourth fastest time in the 55
meters (7.81).
Freeman has similarly enjoyed considerable success in outdoor competition,
where she shares the pole vault record of 11-0 with Swanberg, has run the third
fastest 100 meters (13.20) in school history, and ran a leg on the third fastest
4X100-meter relay team (51.5).
Freeman will attempt to improve upon her accomplishments when Southern Maine
hosts six schools at the USM Co-Ed Invitational on Saturday.

Huskies Re-Write the All-Time Performance List
HANOVER, N.H. - The distance medley relay team turned in the second-fastest
performance in school history, while the 4 x 200-meter relay team registered the
third fastest time, to highlight a number of stellar individual and team
performances at the highly-competitive Dartmouth Invitational on Sunday in
Hanover, N.H.
Sophomore Sarah Marzouk (Wilder, Vt.), senior Kendall Guyette (West
Farmington, Maine), sophomore Kim Brewer (Bristol, Vt.) and junior Kristy Wechter
(South Berwick, Maine) formed the distance medley relay team which finished
seventh in 13:07.47. The only time Southern Maine has registered a faster time in
the event was the school-record 13:01.42 established at Bowdoin in February of
2000.
Brewer additionally ran a leg on the 4X200-meter relay team, where she was
joined by sophomore Kristen Ingalls (Raymond, Maine), freshman Brittany MacLean
(Winslow, Maine), and senior captain Nikki Freeman (Whitefield, Maine). The
quartet finished seventh in 1:50.30, which stands as the third-fastest time in
school history. Ingalls and Brewer ran a leg on the existing school record of
1:49.34 set at the 2002 ECAC Championships.
Individually, MacLean finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 35-04
1/2. Her performance also stands as the second best in school history, and is
eclipsed only by Brewer, who jumped 35-10 3/4 at the 2002 USM Invitational.
Also scoring for the Huskies was Freeman, who cleared 10-00 to tie for sixth
in the pole vault.
Their efforts enabled the Huskies to score 6.5 points and place 22nd among
the 29 scoring teams. Southern Maine edged Little East Conference foe Keene State
College, which tied for 23rd with 6 points.
Traditionally serving as a barometer for future success, the Invitational
attracted a wealth of talented collegiate programs from Divisions I-III in
addition to a host of postgraduates representing regional track clubs. Wheaton
College won the overall team title with 76.83 points, while Dartmouth College was
second with 66 points and UMass Lowell took third with 38 points. Williams College
amassed 36 points to place fourth and the Boston International Track Club rounded
out the top five with 30 points.
Southern Maine will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Bates College,
Colby College, Mount Holyoke and the US Coast Guard at the 2003 USM Invitational.

Women's Indoor Track Captains Named at USM
GORHAM, Maine - Seniors Amy Swanberg (Lamoine, Maine) and Nikki Freeman
(Whitefield, Maine) have been named captains of the University of Southern Maine's
2002-03 women's indoor track and field program.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Amy and Nikki," said Head Coach George
Towle. "Over the past three years their individual progress has mirrored that of
the team, and helped establish Southern Maine as a rising track and field
program."
Southern Maine has captured three consecutive Little East Conference Indoor
Championships and each of the past two outdoor titles.
Freeman and Swanberg have been instrumental to the program's achievements.
Freeman has captured a trio of pole vault titles at the LEC indoor and outdoor
championships, while Swanberg has added a pair. At the Division III New England
Championships, Swanberg has won the event at each the indoor and outdoor meets,
while Freeman captured the title at the 2001 outdoor championships.
In 2000, Swanberg became only the second Husky to compete at the NCAA Indoor
Championships. She joined Angela Whelchel, who competed in the 400 meters in 1991.
Swanberg and Freeman have continually rewritten the University's record book
in the event, and Freeman currently owns the indoor mark at 10-7 1/4, while the
duo has each cleared 11-0 to share the outdoor record.
Southern Maine will commence its 2002-03 indoor campaign on Saturday,
December 7, when it competes at the MIT Invitational. Following the semester
break, the Huskies will compete at the Dartmouth Relays (Jan. 12), host the USM
Invitational (Jan. 18), and travel to the Tufts Invitational (Jan. 25).
During the month of February, Southern Maine will host the USM Co-Ed
Invitational (Feb. 1), compete at the State Championships (Feb. 7), host the
Little East Conference/New England Alliance Championship (Feb. 15), and travel to
the Division III New England Championships (Feb. 22) and the Open New England
Championships (Feb. 28 - Mar. 1).
The Huskies will conclude the campaign with the Division III Championships
(Mar. 7-8) and the NCAA Championships (Mar. 14-15).
