USM's Regina Wilson Named to All-LEC Second Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior defender Regina Wilson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Proctor
Academy) of the University of Southern Maine women's soccer team has been named
to the All-Little East Conference second team following a vote by the
conference's eight head coaches. Jonathan Harper, Commissioner of the Little
East Conference, made the announcement.
A two-year starter on the Huskies' back line, Wilson played in 15 matches
this season. This is the first time in her career that Wilson has received all-
conference recognition.
"I'm extremely pleased for Reggie," commented head coach Lisa Petruccelli.
"She demonstrated a superior level of commitment to her play and the team this
season. She doesn't simply attend practices or get to the game. She gives each
drill, each practice, each game, her best effort. She makes her teammates
better players because of her tireless work rate against them in practice and
with them in a game. Reggie willingly accepted any challenge we gave her and is
very deserving of this recognition."
During her four-year career, Wilson played in 68 matches, starting 41, and
scored one goal.
Southern Maine finished the 2008 season with a 4-12-1 overall record.

Rhode Island College Blanks Southern Maine 2-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island College junior midfielder Christina
Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) registered three points, including the game-winning
goal, to lead the Anchorwomen to their first Little East Conference women's
soccer victory of the season, 2-0, over the University of Southern Maine this
afternoon at the RIC Soccer Complex.
The hosts wrap up the campaign with an overall record of 2-16-1, while the
visitors finish at 4-12-1. The Anchorwomen finish with a 1-5-1 mark in the
Little East, while the Huskies end the fall with an 0-6-1 record.
The win is the first for Rhode Island College since August 30 and snaps a
16-game winless streak. The Anchorwomen earned the shutout win despite playing
the final 55 minutes a player down due to a red card.
Rhode Island College carried the momentum throughout the first half, out
shooting the Huskies, 15-6. However, the Anchorwomen were unable to solve USM
senior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand), who made several
diving stops to keep the host's at bay, and entered the intermission tied at
0-0.
Tavana had an opportunity to put Rhode Island College on the board in the
57th minute with a penalty kick, but Bradley leaped to her right to deny the
attempt.
The Anchorwomen were finally able to crack the scoring column in the 63rd
minute, when Tavana netted her team-leading seventh marker of the season off a
free kick from 30-yards out on the right sideline. Her shot trickled through
Bradley's hands and snuck past the goal line
Sophomore Brittany Caldwell (Warwick, R.I.) recorded an insurance goal in
the 71st minute, when she deposited a rebound into the back of the net. Tavana
generated the scoring opportunity with a shot from the left side of the 18-yard
box that hit the inside of the right goal post and rolled on to Caldwell's foot.
RIC sophomore Maddie Pirri (Bristol, R.I.) reached double digits in saves
with 10 as she earned her second shutout victory of the season. Bradley also
recorded 10 stops.
Southern Maine had a slight advantage in corner kicks (6-5), while each

DANBURY, Conn. -- Senior co-captain Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield,
Conn.) scored two goals and senior Victoria Capozziello (Fairfield, Conn.) added
one in their final regular-season home game for Western Connecticut State

Five minutes later, senior Amy Corchard (Monroe, Conn.) found Nathans on
the left side and Nathans quickly delivered a perfect pass to Capozziello in
front of the Southern Maine goal for a 2-0 WestConn lead.
In the second half, Nathans scored her 10th goal of the season when Lauren
Matthews (Monroe, Conn.) fired a pass between two Southern Maine defenders and
past the Huskies' goalie. Nathans quickly deposited the ball in the back of the
goal to extend the WestConn lead to 3-0 and close out the game's scoring.
For the game, WestConn dominated the offensive action by taking 43 shots to
three for Southern Maine. The Colonials also held a 12-1 advantage in corner

The Huskies fall to 4-9-1.
Kiley put the Rams up 1-0 in the 30th minute as she took a pass from

Western Connecticut Aims For Little East Three-Peat
Southern Maine Picked for the Fifth Slot
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Western Connecticut State University has been
chosen as the preseason favorite to win the 2008 Little East Conference Women's
Soccer Regular Season Championship after a vote by the league's eight head
coaches. The Colonials have won the past two conference championship
tournaments, advancing to the NCAA Division III Tournament as the Little East
automatic qualifier each year.
Western Connecticut earned seven of the eight first place votes and totaled
62 points to secure the top ranking in the annual coaches' survey. Eastern
Connecticut State University received the final first place vote and 53 points
to narrowly nip Keene State College by just a single marker for the second seed.
Under the direction of Head Coach Joe Mingachos, Western Connecticut
enjoyed the program's most successful season in 2007, boasting an overall record
of 21-3-1. The Colonials established a new single-season wins mark, putting an
additional victory between the previous standard. Mingachos led Western
Connecticut to its fifth overall Little East Conference Championship Tournament,
earning the program's seventh appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Colonials
strung together four postseason victories to advance to the national semifinal
round for the first time in the program's history before bowing out to the
eventual national champion, Wheaton College (Ill.).
Mingachos will welcome back three all-conference selections from the 2007
squad, including first-tam striker Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, Conn.).
Nathans became the first Western Connecticut women's soccer student-athlete to
earn first-team All-American honors after leading the conference circuit in
scoring (45 points). Nathans and her teammates will host WPI at 7 p.m. on Sept.
2 in the season opener.
Eastern Connecticut recorded its seventh-straight season with at least 11
victories last year, sporting an overall mark of 11-6-0. The Warriors used a
stifling defensive attack-allowing the least amount of goals in the conference
and setting the program's consecutive shutout streak (6)-to earn the second seed
in the conference tournament. Head Coach Chris D'Ambrosio led his squad into
the championship match of Little East Tournament before being edged by the
Colonials, 2-1.
Eastern Connecticut returns an experienced group of student-athletes back
to the fold from the 2007 campaign, including 14 letter winners and seven
starters. Senior midfielder Nicole Guadette (Colchester, Conn.) and junior
defender Christine Lemieux (South Windsor, Conn.) each earned first-team honors
last Fall, while junior midfielder Taylor MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.)
represented the Warriors on the second team. The Warriors will make their debut
against Manhattanville at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 2.
Keene State College reached the finals of the 2007 Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Tournament, earning the program's
11th consecutive postseason appearance. Head Coach Denise Lyons has recorded at
least 12 victories in each of her 11 campaigns on the Division III pitch, and
last season was no exception as her Owls sported an overall record of 14-9-1.
Keene State will return 15 letter winners and six starters from a year ago,
including second-team all-conference selection junior midfielder Molly Brunelle
(Walpole, N.H.). The 2006 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, Brunelle
started all 23 matches and produced six points (1-4). Keene State will host
Norwich University at 1 p.m. on Aug. 30 to open the 2008 slate.
Completing the preseason coaches' poll in projected order of finish are
Rhode Island College (33), University of Southern Maine (31), Plymouth State
University (28), University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (19), and University of
Massachusetts Boston (10).
The top-six teams in the final regular season standings qualify for the
2008 Little East Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament with the No.
1 and No. 2 seeds receiving a bye and hosting semifinal round action on
Thursday, Nov. 6. The conference champion will be crowned on Saturday, Nov. 8
