Towle Named Little East Conference Co-Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- Veteran University of Southern Maine womenís cross
country head coach George Towle has been name Co-Coach of the Year by the Little
East Conference for the recently completed 2008 fall season. Towle shared the
award with Peter Thomas, head coach at Keene State College.
The Coach of the Year Award was one of three, end-of-the-season awards
announced today by Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East Conference.
Keene State swept the other two awards as junior Rita Marcotte was named Runner
of the Year and freshman Heather Pierce was picked as the Rookie of the Year.
Towle, who was named LEC Coach of the Year in 2007, earned a share of the
award for the second consecutive season. He guided the Huskies to a 19th-place
finish at the NCAA New England Regional Championship, defeating 30 other
regional squads, with 590 total points. Southern Maine posted a second place
finish at the Little East Conference Championship and to third place in the New
England Alliance Championship team standings.
Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) paced the Huskies the entire season,
earning All Little East Conference/All-New England Alliance honors. Towle
trained one All-Little East runner, three All-New England Alliance harriers, and
seven All-Little East Academic members.

Southern Maine Finishes 19th at NCAA Regional
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine women's cross
country team closed its 2008 season with a solid, 19th-place finish at the NCAA
Division III New England Regional Championship held Saturday at the Mount
Greylock High School course in Williamstown, Mass.
Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) was the first USM runner across the
finish line, coming home in 63rd place after completing the 6,000-meter course
in 24 minutes, 40.9 seconds. Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge,
Vt./Middlebury Union) also cracked the top 100 finishers finishing 92nd in a
time of 25:17.4.
Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) was the third USM finisher coming
home in 107th place with a time of 25:35.4. Freshman Jillian Doyle (North
Conway, N.H./Kennett) placed 149th after turning in a time of 26:35.3.
Sophomore Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/MDI) was the fifth scoring runner for
USM in 179th place with a time of 27:12.2.
Middlebury College won the team title with 57 points, followed by Williams
College with 82 points. Those two teams earn the two automatic team berths from
the New England region.
M.I.T. was third with 162 points, followed by Colby College in fourth with
170 points, and Amherst College in fifth with 174 points. Southern Maine
tallied 590 points. M.I.T., Colby and Amherst will await a possible at-large
team berth.
The NCAA will announce the full 32 team field and individual qualifiers for
next weekend's national championship race on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Elise Tropiano of Amherst was the individual winner with time of
21:49.3.
There were 49 scoring teams (and six incomplete teams) in the meet and 330
competitors finished the race.

USM Has Strong Day at LEC-Alliance Championships
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Senior Gabrielle "Gabby" Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine)
finished fourth overall to highlight the University of Southern Maine women's
cross country team's efforts at the 2008 New England Alliance and Little East
Conference Championships run Saturday at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.
The Huskies finished third among the 12 teams competing in the New England
Alliance Championship, and second among six teams in the Little East scoring.
The New England Alliance race includes schools from the Little East Conference
(LEC) and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Each
conference also scores a conference champion from the race.
Cyr covered the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 6.98 seconds to place
fourth in the Alliance race. Cyr's finish was the best by a USM runner since
Sara Marzouk came home second in 2005.
Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) was the second USM runner to cross
the line, finishing 11th with a time of 19:45.37. Junior captain Sarah Myrick
(Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) was just strides behind in 12th place in a
time of 19:48.63. Cyr, Dion and Myrick each earned All-Alliance honors (top
20). Cyr was the lone USM runner to take home All-LEC accolades (top seven).
Rounding out USM's five scoring runners were freshman Jillian Doyle (North
Conway, N.H./Kennett) who finished 32nd overall in 21:21.15, and sophomore
Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in 33rd place with a time
of 21:23.20.
Keene State swept the Alliance and Little East titles. The Owls took the
Alliance crown outdistancing host Westfield State College, 25-61. USM was third
with 84 points, followed by Bridgewater State College with 134 points and the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 141 points. The Owls took the LEC
title with 18 points, followed by USM with 53.
The Huskies will take next weekend off before concluding their 2008 season
at the NCAA New England Regional Championships at Mount Greylock HS in
Williamstown, Mass., on November 15.

Gabby Cyr Named LEC Runner of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Gabrielle "Gabby" Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine women's cross country team has been named the
Little East Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for her
performance at the State of Maine Championship. The announcement was made
Tuesday by Little East Conference commissioner Jonathan Harper.
This is the fourth time this season that Cyr has been tabbed as the LEC
Runner of the Week. She was previously recognized in September 15 and 22, and
October 6.
At the State Championship held last Saturday at the Twin Brook Complex
(Cumberland, Maine), Cyr was the first USM finisher coming home in eighth place
among the 115 finishers. She covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 19
minutes, 19.95 seconds.
Paced by Cyr's finish, the Huskies finished fourth among the eight teams
competing in the final standings. Colby College won the team title, and Anne
Monjar of Bowdoin College was the individual winner with her time of 18:40.17.
After a week off, the Huskies will return to action on November 1 at the
Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships being hosted by
Westfield (Mass.) State College.

Southern Maine Fourth at State Championship
CUMBERLAND, Maine -- Paced by senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine), the
University of Southern Maine women's cross country team finished fourth at the
annual State of Maine Women's Cross Country Championships run Saturday at the
Twin Brook Complex in Cumberland, Maine.
Cyr finished eighth overall covering the women's 5,000-meter course in 19
minutes, 19.95 seconds to lead the Huskies.
Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) was the
second USM runner to cross the line, coming home in 26th place overall with her
time of 20:08.71. Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) finished 31st overall
in 20:30.05.
Colby College won its fourth team title in the last five years with 30
points. Bowdoin College was second with 46 points followed by Bates College
with 57 and USM with 129.
Anne Monjar of Bowdoin was the individual winner with her time of 18:40.17.
After a week off, the Huskies will return to action on November 1 at the
Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships being hosted by
Westfield (Mass.) State College.

Huskies Compete at New England Championship
BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) and junior captain
Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) represented the University of
Southern Maine women's cross country at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur
Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) Championship run Saturday at Franklin Park in
Boston.
Cyr finished 109th among the 301 finishers with a time of 19 minutes, 30
seconds. Myrick came home 223rd with a time of 20:54. This was the first time
each has participated in the New England Championship.
Boston College dominated the field placing five runners among the first 11
finishers to win the team title with 38 points. Brown University was a distant
second with 141 points. Rounding out the top five teams were Williams College
(190), Dartmouth College (193) and Boston University (201).
Andrea Walkonen, a graduate student at Boston University, was the
individual winner with her time of 17:19.
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday (3:00 p.m.) when it hosts
the State Championship at Twin Brook in Cumberland, Maine.

Gabby Cyr Named LEC Runner of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Gabby Cyr (Fort
Kent, Maine) has been selected as the Little East Conference women's cross
country Runner of the Week for her performance last Saturday at the Pop Crowell
Invitational held at Gordon College. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the
Little East, made the announcement Monday afternoon.
Cyr placed third overall among the 276 finishers at the Pop Crowell
Invitational. She covered the five kilometer course in a time of 18 minutes, 52
seconds. Cyr helped the Huskies to a ninth place finish (262 points) in the
field of 25 teams.
This is the third time this season that Cyr has been picked as the LEC
Runner of the Week. She previously was honored on September 15 and September
22.
Southern Maine travels to Bristol, R.I., this Saturday (11:00 a.m.) for the
Roger Williams University Invitational.

Gabby Cyr Third at Pop Crowell Invitational
WENHAM, Mass. -- Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) placed third overall
to lead the University of Southern Maine women's cross country team to a ninth
place finish at the Pop Crowell Cross Country Invitational held Saturday at
Gordon College in Wenham, Mass.
Cyr toured the five-kilometer course in a time of 18 minutes, 52 seconds to
finish third behind senior Catheryn Lariviere of Emmanuel College and Heather
Searles of New Hampshire Technical College. Lariviere and Searles each had a
finishing time of 18:32.
Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) was the
second USM runner to cross the line, coming home in 21st place overall in 20:10.
Sophomore Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/MDI) was the next USM finisher in
80th position in 21:45. Junior Alaina Harris (South Portland, Maine), running
her first race of the fall, placed 85th overall in 21:47.
Westfield State College took the team title with a score of 49 points.
Wellesley College was second with 75 points, followed by Roger Williams
University (122), Gordon (125) and Saint Anselm College (162). USM finished
with 262 points.
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday when it participates in the
Roger Williams University Invitational.

Gabby Cyr Named LEC Runner of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight week, University of Southern
Maine senior Gabrielle "Gabby" Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) has been named the Little
East Conference women's cross country Runner of the Week following her
outstanding performance this past Saturday at the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth Invitational. Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East,
announced the weekly awards Monday afternoon.
Cyr led all Little East competitors across the finish line at the UMD
Invitational, placing sixth among the 310 runners with a time of 18 minutes, 39
seconds. Her time was 1:15 faster than her 2007 run, and she improved 55 places
in the finishing order.
At the season-opening University of New England Invitational on September
13, Cyr won that race despite going off course around the two-mile mark and
having to overtake five runners in the final mile of the 5,000-meter race.
The Huskies finished 15th among the 41 teams competing with 478 points. MIT
took the team title with 67 points, followed by Amherst College (88), Brandeis
University (130), Colby College (132) and Springfield College (153).
Melissa Donais, an unattached runner, was the individual winner with a time
of 18:03.
After an off week, the Huskies will return to action on October 4 when they
travel to Gordon College (Wenham, Mass.) for the Pop Crowell Invitational.

Cyr Leads Southern Maine to 15th Place Finish at UMD Invitational
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) turned in
an outstanding performance Saturday coming home in sixth place overall to pace
the University of Southern Maine women's cross country efforts at the 2008
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth "Shriners" Cross Country Invitational.
Cyr covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18 minutes, 39 seconds to
finish sixth overall. Cyr's time was 1:16 faster than her 2007 time of 19:55,
and she improved 55 places in the finishing order.
Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) came across
the line in 19:47 to place 71st overall. Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford,
Maine) posted an 82nd place finish among the 310 competitors with a time of
19:53.
Rounding out USM's five scoring runners were sophomores Kayleigh Shrader
(Kennebunk, Maine) in 130th position overall (20:52) and Alexandra Raynor
(Lamoine, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in 171st place (21:24).
MIT took the team title with 67 points, followed by Amherst College (88),
Brandeis University (130), Colby College (132) and Springfield College (153).
Southern Maine finished 15th (428) among the 41 team competing.

Gabby Cyr Picked as LEC Runner of the Week

Southern Maine women's cross country team has been named the Little East
Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for the week ending
September 14. Jonathan Harper, commissioner of the Little East Conference, made
the announcement Monday afternoon.
Cyr, who only began running cross country last fall, was cited for her
winning performance at the University of New England Cross Country Invitational.
Despite going off course just before the two-mile mark and having to overtake
five runners to win the race, Cyr completed the hilly, 5,000-meter course in a
time of 21 minutes, 5 seconds. This is the first time in her cross country
career that Cyr has been recognized by the Little East.
Southern Maine captured the team title by sweeping the first three spots on
the way to a team score of 28 points. UNE took second place with 57 points,
followed by Endicott College with 63 points and the University of Maine at
Farmington with 66 points. Daniel Webster College and Maine Maritime Academy

going off course to take the top spot and lead the University of Southern Maine
women's cross country team to a first place finish at the University of New
England Cross Country Invitational held Saturday at Rotary Park in Biddeford.
Southern Maine captured the team title by sweeping the first three spots on
the way to a team score of 28 points. UNE took second place with 57 points,
followed by Endicott College with 63 points and the University of Maine at
Farmington with 66 points. Daniel Webster College and Maine Maritime Academy
also had incomplete teams participate.
Cyr, despite going off course just before the two-mile mark and having to
overtake five runners to win the race, completed the hilly, 5,000-meter course
with a time of 21 minutes, 5 seconds. Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge,
VT/Middlebury Union) came in second in 21:08, and sophomore Carly Dion
(Biddeford, Maine) was third in 21:22.

Kennebunk, Maine) in 10th place overall (nine scoring points) in 22:39 and
Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in 14th place (13 scoring
points) in 23:02.
The Huskies will travel to Dartmouth, Mass., next Saturday for the annual
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational.
