                     USM Finishes 10th at NEIGA Championship
                     Huskies First Among Division III Schools

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team fired 
an aggregate score of 320 in the final round of the 70th Annual New England 
Intercollegiate Golf Championship Tuesday at The Captains Golf Course in Brewster, 
Mass., to finish 10th among 46 teams in the overall championship, and first among 
Division Three schools.
     Southern Maine finished the two-day event with a 636 total to trail the 
overall champion, the Division One University of Connecticut Huskies, by 30 shots.  
USM was six shots ahead of the next Division three school, Babson College.  The 
10th place finish overall was the best ever by the Huskies, and it is the first 
time USM has finished first among the Division Three schools.
     Leading the Huskies second day charge was junior James Frost (Brewer, 
Maine/Calais, Maine) with a one-over-par 73 on the par 72, 6700-yard layout.  
Frost finished with a two-day total of 157, tied for 34th place overall (tied 
sixth among Division Three players).
     Sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, Maine), who shot a 74 in the opening round 
Monday, came back with an 81 on Tuesday to finish at 155, tied for 19th overall 
(tied for third among Division Three players).
     Sophomore George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) carded an 83 Tuesday to 
finish at 163.  Senior captain Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) 
finished at 165 after coming home with an 83.  Sophomore Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard 
Beach, Maine) finished at 169.
     Patrick Fillian of Sacred Heart University and Ben Spitz of the University of 
Rhode Island shared the low medalist honor at two-over-par 145.  Fillian won the 
individual title in a playoff.  
     A total of 230 players took part in the tournament.

                Huskies 12th After Day One at NEIGA Championships

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies stand alone in 
12th place after the first day of play at the 70th Annual New England 
Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships being played at The Captains Golf 
Course in Brewster, Mass.
     Sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, Maine) was the Huskies' low man with a three-
over-par 74 on the par 71, 6620-yard layout.  Sophomores Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard 
Beach, Maine) and George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) each finished at nine-
over-par 80.  Senior captain Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine) was the team's fourth 
score at 82.
     In the team standings, the Huskies are 12th overall at 316, and second among 
Division III schools, one shot behind instate rival Husson College.
     The final round will be played Tuesday.

Husson College Invitational Golf Tournament
At Penobscot Valley CC,  Orono, Maine  (Par 72)

         Frost Wins Husson Invitational in Playoff, Huskies Third Overall

     ORONO, Maine  --  Junior James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) of the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team won the 2004 Husson College 
Invitational Golf Tournament in a playoff by edging out Ross McGee of Husson on 
the third hole.
     Frost and McGee each carded a two-day total of one-over-par 145 to share the 
low medalist honor.  Frost used a birdie on the third playoff hole to win the 
tournament.
     Sophomore George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) was the Huskies second low 
score with a 155 followed by sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, Maine) at 158.
     Laval University took the team title with a team score of 602, followed by 
Husson at 611 and Southern Maine at 621.
     The Huskies will close out their 2004 fall campaign next Monday and Tuesday 
when they participate in the 70th Annual NEIGA Championships at the Captains Golf 
Course in Brewster, Mass.

                      SOUTHERN MAINE WINS COLBY GOLF CLASSIC

     WATERVILLE, Maine --- The University of Southern Maine golf team had a score 
of 213 to win the Colby College Golf Classic at Waterville Country Club on 
Saturday.
     Sophomores Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) and George Shabo (Old 
Orchard Beach, Maine) combined to fire a one-under-par 69 to edge teammates James 
Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) and sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, Maine) by one 
shot.  The Huskies third pairing of senior captain Ashley Fifield (Buxton, 
Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) and freshman Greg Mitchell (Durham, Maine/Brunswick HS) 
carded a 74.
     The Huskies will play Sunday and Monday in the Husson College Invitational at 
the Penobscot Valley CC in Orono, Maine.

                       Monks Edge Huskies on Matching Cards

     SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies and the 
St. Joseph's College Monks each fired a 15-under-par 55 Friday afternoon at the 
annual five-man USM Scramble played at the Sable Oaks GC in South Portland.
     The Monks were declared the event winner on matching cards.  Playing for the 
winning Monks were Joe Manganaro, Frank Renaud, Chris Deroche, Jeff Peterson, and 
Keith Sheehan.
     The Southern Maine quintet was comprised of junior James Frost (Brewer, 
Maine/Calais HS), sophomore Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine), senior 
captain Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS), sophomore Dustin Freeman 
(York, Maine), and sophomore George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine).
     Bates College took third place with a 57, followed by Colby College at 59 and 
the University of New England with a 61.
     The Huskies travel to the Waterville CC in Waterville, Maine, tomorrow to 
play in the Colby Classic.

                       Frost, Huskies Win USM Fall Classic

     SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine  --  Junior James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais, Maine) 
captured low medalist honors to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies golf 
team to the team championship of the two-round USM Fall Classic played Saturday 
and Sunday at the Sable Oaks GC in South Portland.
     Frost, who shot the low round of tournament on Saturday when he carded a two-
under-par 68, shot 75 on Sunday to give him a 36-hole total of 143.  Frost 
finished seven strokes ahead of sophomore teammate Dustin Freeman (York, Maine).
     Freeman had the best round of the second day with a 73, and finished the 
event at 150.  Sophomore Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) had a total of 
157 (80-77) and senior captain Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) 
closed with a 161 (81-80).
     Following Frost and Hamilton was Jean-Sebastien Legare of Laval University 
(Quebec) in third at 152.  Four golfers, Joe Manganaro of St. Joseph's College, 
Ross McGee of Husson College, and Mathieu Paradis and Dominic Durette of Laval, 
finished one stroke further back at 153.
     Southern Maine, which trailed Laval University (Quebec) by two shots in the 
team standings heading into the final round, had a total of 611 (306-305) compared 
to Laval's total of 614 (304-310).  Husson College took third with an aggregate 
score of 632.
     The Huskies return to action on Friday (October 8) when they host their 
annual scramble event at Sable Oaks GC.

                     Huskies Take Second at UMF Invitational

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team, paced 
by sophomore Dustin Freeman's (York, Maine) eight-over-par 80, managed a second 
place finish among eight teams competing in the University of Maine at Farmington 
Golf Invitational played Wednesday at the Belgrade Lakes GC.
     The Huskies low four players combined for a score of 338 to finish one stroke 
ahead of Bowdoin College and Thomas College in the run for second place.  USM was 
21 strokes behind the tournament winner, Husson College.
     Senior Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) followed Freeman with an 
84.  Sophomore Mark Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI) was next with an 85.  Sophomore 
George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) was the fourth man at 89.
     Lance Libby of Husson was the low medalist for the day with a 76.  Scoring 
conditions were very tough as only five players broke 80.
     The Huskies return to action this weekend when they host the two-day USM Fall 
Classic at Sable Oaks GC in South Portland, Maine.

                    Frost, Huskies Second at State Championship

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) fired a 
three-under-par 69 to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a tie for 
second place among the 14 teams competing at the 2004 Maine Intercollegiate Golf 
Championship played Friday at the Riverside Golf course in Portland.
     Frost, who won the individual title last year in a playoff, finished one 
stroke behind St. Joseph's College senior Joe Manganaro (Gorham, Maine) for the 
low score of the championship.  On the day, four players shot par or under.
     All five USM players 77 or better.  Sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, Maine) 
had his best round of the season with a three-over-par 75.  Sophomore Joe Hamilton 
(Old Orchard Beach, Maine) carded a 76, while senior Ashley Fifield (Buxton, 
Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) and sophomore Mark Carrgher (Charlottetown, PEI/Hoosac 
School) each shot 77.
     St. Joseph's, paced by Manganaro and freshman Frank Renaud (East Middlebury, 
Vt.), won the team title with a four-man aggregate score score of 295, two shots 
better than Southern Maine and Husson College.  Bowdoin College at 306 and the 
University of Maine at Farmington at 308 round out the top five teams.
     The Huskies return to the links next Wednesday (September 29) when they 
travel to Belgrade, Maine, to play in the UMaine Farmington Invitational at the 
Belgrade Lakes GC.

                     Huskies Edge Husson, St Joseph's by One

     CASCO, Maine  --  Sophomore Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) carded a 
two-over par 74 to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to one-stroke 
victory over Husson College and St. Joseph's College in the John Queenan Memorial 
Golf Tournament hosted by St. Joseph's at the Point Sebago Golf and Beach Resort 
in Casco, Maine.
     Hamilton finished third overall behind Ross Magee of Husson who took low 
medalist honors with a sparkling two-under par 70, and Frank Renaud of St. 
Joseph's who shot a 73.
     Junior James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) of Southern Maine was fourth 
overall with a 75.  Senior Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) came home 
with a 78 and sophomore Dustin Freeman (York, Maine) was the fourth USM score at 
79.
     Southern Maine took the team honor with 306 strokes with Husson and St. 
Joseph's just one stroke back.  The University of Maine at Farmington rounded out 
the top four at 317.
     The Huskies will attempt to defend their State Intercollegiate Championship 
this Friday at the Riverside CC in Portland.

                    Huskies Take Third at Terrier Invitational
 
     ROCKPORT, Maine  --  Junior James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) carded a 
three-over-par 73 to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a third 
place finish among seven teams competing at the Terrier Invitational played 
Thursday at the Samoset GC Resort in Rockport, Maine.
     The Huskies low four players combined for a total of 313 strokes to finish 
behind Husson College, which won the event with a total of 294 and St. Joseph's 
College at 307.
     Senior Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) had a 79, followed by 
sophomores Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) and George Shabo (Old Orchard 
Beach, Maine) who shot 80 and 81, respectively, for the Huskies.
     Husson's Randy Picard took the low individual honors with a one-over-par 71.  
He was one stroke ahead of Joe Manganaro of St. Joseph's.  Frost finished third.
     Southern Maine returns to action next Tuesday (September 21) when they will 
play in the St. Joseph's Invitational at Point Sebago CC.

Laval Edges Out Southern Maine By One

     SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine  --  Paced by Jean-Michel Plante's one-over-par 73, 
Laval University edged out the University of Southern Maine "Blue" team by one 
stroke, 307-308, to capture the team title at the USM Invitational golf tournament 
played Sunday afternoon at Sable Oaks GC.
     Plante took the low medalist honor by two strokes over a trio of golfers.  
Tied for second spot at 75 were USM junior James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS), 
Joe Manganaro of St. Joseph's College and Jean-Sebastien Legare of Laval.  
Rounding out the top was USM sophomore George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) 
with a 76.
     The USM "Blue" team included Frost, Shabo, sophomores Joe Hamilton (78; Old 
Orchard Beach, Maine) and Dustin Freeman (79; York, Maine), and senior Ashley 
Fifield (80; Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS).  
     Playing for the USM "Gold" squad, which placed seven among the 11 teams 
playing, were freshmen Mitch Kessler (88; Portland, Maine/Cheverus HS) and Greg 
Mitchell (83; Durham, Maine/Brunswick HS), sophomores Mark Carragher (84; 
Charlottetown, PEI) and David Collaton (91; Oakville, Ontario), and senior Jake 
Iannetta (did not finish due to darkness; Dover-Foxcroft, Maine).
     The Huskies will travel to Samoset CC in Rockport, Maine, on Thursday for the 
Terrier Invitational hosted by Thomas College.

                         Huskies Roll at UNE Invitational

     SACO, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team opened 
its 2004 fall season in fine style Wednesday taking the top three spots on the way 
to a 15-stroke victory in the University of New England Invitational played at the 
Biddeford-Saco CC.
     Junior James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) led the Huskies and captured low 
medallist honors by carding a three-over-par 74.  Senior Ashley Fifield (Buxton, 
Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) was one stroke back at 75, and sophomore George Shabo (Old 
Orchard Beach, Maine) was next at 76.
     Sophomore Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) tied for fourth at 77 with 
Joe Manganaro of St. Joseph's College.  USM's fifth player, sophomore Dustin 
Freeman (York, Maine) carded an 81.
     The Huskies took the team trophy with a four-score total of 302, followed by 
St. Joseph's at 317.  UNE took the third spot with 330 while Gordon College 
rounded out the field at 335.
     The Huskies return to action when they host the USM Invitational this Sunday 
at the Sable Oaks GC in South Portland.
