Frost Takes Second at NEIGA Championships
USM Huskies Tie for 17th Overall; 6th Among Division III Teams

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Sophomore James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) of the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team fired a 4-over par 76 in the final 
round of the 69th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association 
Championships to finish second overall in the 36-hole tournament played Monday and 
Tuesday at the Captains GC in Brewster, Mass.
     Frost finished the event with a two-day total of 148, two shots behind Jordan 
Burke of the University of Connecticut.  Burke captured low medalist honors with a 
two-day score of 146.  He had a 3-over par 75 in the final round.  Frost was the 
low medalist among competitors from Division III schools, edging Corey Poulin of 
Husson College by two shots.
     USM had an aggregate two-day team total of 665 strokes (+89) to finish in a 
tied for 17th overall, and sixth among Division III schools.  The University of 
Rhode Island captured the overall team and Division I titles with a score of 610.  
Bryant College was the top Division II team in fifth place overall, and Husson 
College was the class of the Division III teams in sixth place overall.  Forty-
five schools competed in the tournament.
     Other USM players competing in the championship included junior captain 
Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine), Dan Dalfonso (West Rockport, Maine), seniors Garik 
Thiboutot (Cumberland, Maine) and Jeff Lavoie (Lewiston, Maine).

Southern Maine presently is in 12th place overall among the 45 competing schools.  
USM totaled 322 (+34) for the first round.  The University of Rhode Island is in 
first place with a score of 298 (+10).  Final round will be played Tuesday.

USM Scramble

Huskies' "Blue" Team Wins USM Scramble

     SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies "Blue" 
team posted a 12-under par 58 Friday afternoon to win the 2003 USM Scramble played 
at the Sable Oaks Golf Club.
     The USM "Blue" fivesome of senior Chad Lauze (Gorham, N.H.), junior captain 
Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine), junior Bob Herzing (Augusta, Maine), freshman Dan 
Dalfonso (West Rockport, Maine) and senior Garik Thiboutot (Cumberland, Maine) 
combined to fashion the low score of the day, edging out teams from Colby College 
and St. Joseph's College by one stroke.
     The USM "Gold" group of sophomore JJ Frost (Brewer, Maine), freshmen George 
Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) and Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine), 
senior Jeff Lavoie (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Jacob Iannetta (Dover-Foxcroft, 
Maine) finished with a 62, 8-under par, to tie with Bates College for fourth 
place.
     The Huskies will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday (October 13-14) when 
they host the two-day USM Fall Classic at Sable Oaks.

Frost, Huskies Win State Championship

	PORTLAND, Maine  --  Sophomore James Frost (Brewer, Maine/Calais HS) 
birdied the first playoff hole to win the individual title and lead the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies to the team championship at the 2003 State 
of Maine Championship played Friday at the Riverside GC.
	The Huskies took the team crown on a tiebreaker after finishing in a tie 
at 309 with Husson College.  The tie with broken using the fifth score.
	Frost and Joe Manganaro of St. Joseph’s College each carded an even par 72 
at the 6,406-yard Riverside GC layout to finish atop the leader board, one 
stroke ahead of five other golfers.  On the first playoff hole, Frost birdied 
the hole to win the individual title.  He is the first USM golfer to take the 
individual title since Jason Rousseau captured the crown in 1999.
	Freshman Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) fired a 4-over par 76 to 
finish all alone in 12th place.  Senior Chad Lauze (Gorham, N.H.) was two shots 
further back in a seven-way tie for 13th place.  Junior Ashley Fifield (Buxton, 
Maine) and freshman George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) each finished at 81.
	USM returns to action next Wednesday (October 1) when it plays in the 
UMaine Farmington Invitational at the Belgrade Lakes GC.

Huskies Take Rain-Shortened John Queenan Memorial Tournament

     CASCO, Maine  --  Sophomore James Frost (Brewer, Maine) carded a 2-under par 
34 for nine holes to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to the team 
title in the rain-shortened John Queenan Memorial Tournament hosted by St. 
Joseph's College at the Point Sebago Gof Club.
     USM took the team trophy with a combined score of 153, four strokes better 
than Husson College.  The University of Maine at Farmington was third at 164 
followed by the St. Joseph's "White" at 167.  Seven teams competed in the event.
     Freshman Joe Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) continued his impressive 
early-season showing with a 38 while classmate George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, 
Maine) came in with a 40.  Junior Bob Herzing (Augusta, Maine) completed USM's 
team score with a 41.
     Frost edge UMaine Farmington's Sam Marzenell by two shots for the low 
medalist honor.  Owen Lennon of the University of New England was third with a 37, 
followed by five golfers, including Hamilton, at 38.
     The Huskies swing back into action this Friday when they participate in the 
State Intercollegiate Championship at Riverside GC in Portland.

Huskies Take Second at Sid Farr Invitational
     WATERVILLE, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies finished 
second among five teams competing in the annual Sid Farr Invitational Golf 
Tournament hosted by Colby College Sunday at the par 70 Waterville CC.
     Sophomore James Frost (Brewer, Maine) paced the Huskies with a 3-over-par 73 
and amassed 15 points in the "Modified Stableford Scoring System" used to 
determined the team title.  Senior Chad Lauze (Berlin, N.H.) and freshman Joe 
Hamilton (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) each carded a 74 and 14 points.  Freshman 
George Shabo (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) was next with a 79 and 10 points.
     Joe Manganaro of St. Joseph's College was the low medalist on the day with a 
2-under par 68 followed by Husson College senior Cory Poulin with an even par 70.  
Manganaro had the top 'modified" score amassing 20 points.  Players were awarded 3 
points for an eagle, 2 points for a birdie, 1 points for a par, 0 points for a 
bogey and minus 1 point for double bogey and higher.
     Husson took the team title with 74 points, followed by Southern Maine with 56 
points, Bowdoin College with 39 points, St. Joseph's with 36 points and Colby 
College with 34 points.
     Southern Maine will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to the 
Point Sebago GC (Casco, Maine) to play in the St. Joseph's College Invitational.

Terrier Invitational
At Samoset Resort, Rockport, Maine
(Par 70,  6,018 yards)

Huskies Tie For Third at Terrier Invitational

     ROCKPORT, Maine  --  Sophomore James Frost (Brewer, Maine) carded a four-
over-par 74 lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a third place tie 
among the seven schools competing in the Terrier Invitational tournament at 
Samoset Resort Tuesday.
     Freshman Dan Dalfonso (West Rockport, Maine) was the next USM finisher with 
an 80 while junior captain Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine) and senior Jeff Lavoie 
(Lewiston, Maine) each came home in 82.
     Husson senior Corey Poulin took the low medalist honor with a 1-over-par 71.  
Husson won the team title at 301 followed by St. Joseph's College at 309.  USM and 
UMaine Farmington tied for third at 318.

Huskies Edge Monks in Playoff

     SACO, Maine  --  Junior captain Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine) birdied the 
first playoff hole to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies the edge over 
the St. Joseph's College Monks in the University of New England Invitational 
played Wednesday at the Biddeford-Saco Country Club.
     USM and St. Joseph's four low players combined to finish the event with 
scores of 319.  The players then played the par 4, 349-yard first hole with the 
Huskies low four posting a 15 score while the Monks low four posted a 16 score.
     Owen Lennon of UNE took the low medalist honor carding a 2-over-par 73 on the 
par 71, 6,180-yard layout.  Joe Manganaro of St. Joseph's was one shot back at 74 
followed by teammate John Destino with a 76.  Sophomore Jim Frost (Brewer, Maine) 
and junior Bob Herzing (Augusta, Maine) of Southern Maine round out the top five 
with 77 and 78 respectively.  Only five players broke 80 on the day.
     Fifield and senior Jeff Lavoie (Lewiston, Maine) each shot 82 for the 
Huskies.
     The Huskies return to action Sunday (September 14 when they host the USM 
Inviational at Sable Oaks Golf club in South Portland.

Fifield Named USM Golf Team Captain

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) of 
the University of Southern Maine Huskies golf team has been named the squad's 
captain for the 2003 fall season.  Fourth-year head coach Reggie Grant made the 
announcement recently.
     The Huskies opened their 2003 season last Friday (September 5) with a second 
place finish among the six teams competing in the University of Maine at Presque 
Isle Invitational Tournament.  USM posted a 307 team score for the one-day event 
at the par 72 Presque Isle CC to finish seven strokes behind Husson College.  
Fifield carded an 81.
     A two-year letterman, Fifield has been a among the team's top five players in 
each of his first two seasons.  As a freshman (2001), he had an 82.6 stroke 
average for 13 rounds with a season best 76 during the first round of the USM 
Invitational.  Last season, he had an 81.8 stroke average for 12 rounds with a 
team season-best round of 73 at the USM Invitational.
     The Huskies return to the links today (Wednesday, Sept. 10) when they play in 
the University of New England Invitational at the Biddeford-Saco CC.
     The remainder of the 2003 schedule is as follows:  Sept. 14, USM Invitational 
(at Sable Oaks CC);  Sept. 16, at Terrier Invitational (at Samoset CC);  Sept. 21, 
at Sid Farr Invitational (at Waterville CC);  Sept. 23, at St. Joseph's 
Invitational (at Point Sebago GC);  and Sept. 26, Maine State Championship (at 
Riverside GC).
     Also October 1, at UMaine Farmington Invitational (at Belgrade Lakes CC);

USM Huskies Take Second in Season Opener

     PRESQUE ISLE, Maine  --  Sophomore James Frost (Brewer, Maine) carded an 
even-par 72 to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a second place 
finish among the six teams competing in the season-opening University of Maine at 
Presque Isle Invitational played Friday afternoon at the Presque Isle CC.
     Frost was second low medallist behind Husson College's Corey Poulin who took 
low medallist honors with a two-under-par 70.  USM freshman Joe Hamilton (Old 
Orchard Beach, Maine) was third with a 75 in his first collegiate event, and 
senior Jeff Lavoie (Lewiston, Maine) was tied for 10th at 79.  Junior Ashley 
Fifield (Buxton, Maine) finished with an 81.
     Husson took the team title edging Southern Maine by seven strokes, 300-307.  
Laval University from Ste-Foy, Quebec, was third at 312.
     The Huskies hit the links next on Wednesday (September 10) when they travel 
to the Biddeford-Saco CC in Saco, Maine, to play host University of New England 
along with Endicott College and Gordon College.
