Huskies Take Fourth at Maine Intercollegiate Championship

	PORTLAND, Maine  --  Junior captain Pat Otto (Furlong, Penn.) carded a 
four-over par 76 while playing in a cold, light rain to lead the University of 
Southern Maine Huskies to a fourth place finish among 11 teams in the annual 
Maine Intercollegiate Golf Championship played at Riverside Golf Course in 
Portland.
	The Huskies low four scores combined for a total of 317, just five strokes 
behind surprise champion Thomas College.  Heavy favorite Husson College, which 
had won every tournament it played this fall, and St. Joseph's College finished 
tied for second at 314.  Southern Maine and Bates College rounded out the top 
five.  Only eight strokes separated the first five teams.
	Following Otto for the Huskies were freshman Ryan Garland (Hermon, Maine) 
with a 77, senior Bill Slaiding (Seekonk, Mass.) and freshman Ashley Fifield 
(Buxton, Maine) each with an 82, and senior Corey Junkins (Bangor, Maine) with 
an 87.
	Bill Hutchins of Husson captured individual honors, carding a one-over-par 
73 to edge Josh Vachon of Thomas by a single stroke.  Matt Simard of Colby 
College, Shaun Irish of Thomas and Pascal Chiasson of Bowdoin College finished 
in a three-way tie for third at 75.
	The Huskies return to action next Wednesday (October 3) when they 
participate in the University of Maine at Farmington Invitational at the 
Belgrade Lakes CC.

scheduled to be played at Pt. Sebago CC in Casco, has been postponed due to the 
rainy weather. No makeup date has been announced.

Sid Farr Invitational
at Waterville CC

	WATERVILLE, Maine  --  Junior captain Pat Otto (Furlong, Penn.) carded a 
77 and scored +11 on the "Stableford Scoring System" to lead the University of 
Southern Maine Huskies effort in the annual Sid Farr Invitational hosted by 
Colby College at the Waterville CC Sunday afternoon.
	The Huskies finished fifth among the six teams competing with a 
"Stableford" score of 30.  In the Stableford scoring used in the event, a double 
bogey is worth -1, bogey 0, par +1, birdie +2 and eagle +3.
	Husson College ran away with the title with a score of 58, 21 points 
better than runner-up Bowdoin College with 37 points.  Bates College finished 
third with 35, followed by Tufts with 34 and Southern Maine.  Colby College, 
with 29 points, rounded out the six team field.
	Husson's Joe Finnemore was the low medallist for the event with a 71.  He 
was followed by teammates Corey Pion and Bill Hutchins who each had a 73, and 
Andy Kadin of Bates and Adam Mackie of Bowdoin with 75. Otto's score put him in 
a three-way tie for sixth place.
	Other USM golfers participating included senior Corey Junkins (Bangor, 
Maine) who shot an 80 (+9), sophomore Jon Spinney (Newport, Maine) with an 83 
(+6), sophomore Jeff Lavoie (Lewiston, Maine) with an 84 (+4) and freshman 
Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine) with an 87 (+1).
	USM's next event will be the St. Joseph's College Invitational being held 
at the Pt. Sebago CC in Casco on Tuesday (September 25).

Huskies Take Top Spot in UNE Invitational

	SACO, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies grouped four 
players within a shot of each other to finish first among four teams competing 
at the University of New England Invitational Thursday afternoon at Biddeford-
Saco CC.
	Freshman Ashley Fifield (Buxton, Maine) paced the Huskies with an 82.  
Sophomores Jeff Lavoie (Lewiston, Maine) and Jonathan Spinney (Newport, Maine), 
along with freshman Ryan Garland (Hermon, Maine), were one stroke back at 83.  
Junior Patrick Otto (Furlong, Penn.) rounded out USM's five-man team with an 84.
	John Dailey of Endicott College took medalist honors, firing an 80 on the 
par 71 course.
	Southern Maine took team honors with its low four-man score of 331, 
followed by Endicott at 342, the University of New England at 345 and Gordon 
College at 410.
	The Huskies return to the links this Sunday and Monday (Sept. 16-17) when 
they host the USM Invitational at Bath CC.

Huskies Finish Second at Terrier Invitational

	ROCKPORT, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine golf team, paced by 
sophomore Jeff Lavoie (Lewiston, Maine), finished second among seven teams 
competing at the annual Terrier Invitational hosted by Thomas College at the 
Samoset Resort Wednesday.
	Lavoie fired a six-over-par 76 on the Samoset Resort course.  Junior 
captain Pat Otto (Furling, Penn.) was the Huskies second low man with an 80.  
Senior Bill Slaiding (Seekonk, Mass.) carded an 81.
	Joe Alvarez of Husson College was the low medalist with a three-under-par 
67.  Husson won the team competition with a four-man total of 285.
	The Huskies return to action Thursday with a four-team event hosted by the 
University of New England at Biddeford-Saco CC.

Patrick Otto Named USM Golf Team Captain

	GORHAM, Maine  --  Junior Patrick Otto (Furlong, Penn.) of the University 
of Southern Maine Huskies golf team has been named captain for the upcoming 2001 
fall season following a vote by team members.  Second-year head coach Reg Grant 
made the announcement last Friday after the team's practice.
	The Huskies opened their fall season last weekend (Sunday-Monday) when 
they finished third among nine teams in the Husson College Invitational at the 
Hermon Meadows GC in Hermon, Maine.  The Huskies had a two-day combined score of 
628 (314-314) to finish behind Husson and Laval University (Montreal, Quebec).  
Otto was the Huskies' top finisher, placing seventh after rounds of 77 and 76 on 
the par 72 layout.
	Otto was the Huskies number one player last season after transferring to 
USM from Slippery Rock (Pa.) University.  In ten competitive rounds last fall, 
he averaged 78.7 strokes and was USM's low medalist every round.  Eight of his 
ten rounds were in the 70's.
	The remainder of the Huskies 2001 fall schedule is as follows:  Sept. 12, 
at Thomas Invitational (11:00);  Sept. 13, at UNE Quad (11:00);  Sept. 16-17, 
USM Invitational (@ Bath CC);  Sept. 23, at Sid Farr Invitational (12:00);  
Sept. 25, at St. Joseph's Invitational (11:00);  and Sept. 28, Maine State 
Tournament (10:00).
	Also, Oct. 3, at UMaine Farmington Invitational (11:30);  Oct. 7-8, at UNE
