Community Connections

Our educational programs are developed in close consultation with the business community, and many courses involve direct interaction with the broader world outside the University.

When we develop new programs, we work closely with potential employers of our graduates to ensure that we are providing the specific training that is most needed. We also stay in close contact with our alumni, so that we gauge how successful we are in preparing students for future employment and to make needed changes as the nature of the workplace changes.

Members of the community serve on various advisory groups for the School. These advisory groups serve to provide ongoing direction to development of programs, courses, facilities, and staffing.

Often a distinction is made between "pure" science and "applied" science. As our name indicates, our chief emphasis is on the applied end of a continuum. Often "pure" science is taught in a vacuum, devoid of real-world context. On the other hand, we feel that such real-world context makes science come alive for students, so that abstract ideas are made more comprehensible and more relevant.

We emphasize specific educational opportunities that allow students to take on and to solve real problems, not just artificial problems from textbooks. For example, in our introductory engineering class, students work on projects that have been brought to the instructor by teachers and students in local public schools. Students have the opportunity see tangible results for their efforts, results that help something work better for people in the community.
