He earned an AB in political theory from Harvard, and an MBA in finance and an MFA in theatre administration, both from Yale. He spent seven years working in the entertainment industry and the nonprofit arts and three years writing fiction. He finally returned to computer science in 1990 when he began taking courses at the University of Southern Maine. He received an MS in computer science from USM in 1994 and a PhD in computer science from Duke University in 2000. After receiving his PhD, he joined the faculty of the Computer Science Department at Bowdoin College, where he currently teaches and pursues research in artificial intelligence.
