Late Winter
Late Winter, 2007, this book pulls out from a box. The life size cedar waxwings are colored pencil on pergamenta tethered by linen to each other and to carved branches (Lin Lisberger). Here the birds lift up about 8 feet from the box.

Rebecca Goodale creates unique and limited edition books, many with sculptural components. She was a printmaking major at the Portland School of Art, Portland, ME (1971-1973), and studied textile design at the Memphis College of Art, Memphis TN (B.F.A., 1975) and Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, MI (graduate studies 1975-1976). She has been an instructor in the Art Department at USM since 1981.

Goodale's recent one-person exhibitions include the Saint Xavier University Gallery, Chicago, IL (1999);Maine Coast Artists Gallery, Rockport, ME (1999); Davidson & Daughters, Portland, ME (1999); Turtle Gallery, Deer Isle, ME (1999); Lee Arts Center, Arlington,VA (1998); June Fitzpatrick Gallery, Portland, ME(1996); Kettleson Library, Sitka,AK (1995); Memphis College of Art, Memphis, TN (1990). She has been in group exhibitions at the New York Public Library(1999-2000); Institute of Contemporary Art, Portland ME (1999);Cambridge Artists Cooperative, Cambridge, MA (1999,1997,1996,1995);Chapel Art Center, St.Anselm College, Manchester, NH (1998); The Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME (1997);Galeria Mesa, Mesa, AZ(1997); The Center for Book Arts, New York, NY (1996); Academy Art Center, Honolulu, HI (1996); Arc Gallery, Chicago, IL (1995); Mercer Gallery, Rochester, NY (1992);and Maine Coast Artists Gallery, Rockport, ME (1992,1990, 1983).

Higgins Beach Sketchbook
"Higgins Beach Sketchbook", 2007, cascades from its binding to display ink on paper images of a bird in flight and eventually landing. In this shot the book is hung approx. 7 feet in the air.

She was a resident fellow at the Island Institute in Sitka, AK (1995), and an artist in residence for Artists Invite Artists at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Newcastle, ME(1995); and received a New Forms Regional Initiative Grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts in 1990.

Her book Island Dog, from Two Dog Press, Deer Isle, ME was published in 1999 and is available at bookstores (almost) everywhere.
