Family:  Rosaceae

 

Hardiness:   Hardy in the Gorham, ME area—Zone 4-7

 

Mature Dimensions:  20-25 feet tall, with a 25-foot width

Habit:  Rounded, vase shaped habit

Bark:  Silver-gray; often exfoliating to a bronze colored inner bark.  Stems and branches are peppered with 1- 1 ½ inch thorns

 

Buds:  Solitary, sessile; rounded with up to 6 exposed reddish brown scales

 

Leaves:  Simple, alternate, oblong-ovate to elliptic; 1-3 ½ inches long, ¾ -1 ½ inches wide and dark green.  Margin finely serrated

 

Flowers:  Rose-like and white; ¾ inch diameter

Fruit:  ½ inch in diameter, scarlet red and persistent well into the winter months

 

Pests/Disease:  Somewhat susceptible to rust; Japanese beetles
