Weeping Higan Cherry

Date Planted: Approximately 1980

Family: Rosaceae

Hardiness: Marginally hardy in the Gorham, ME area; Zone 4(5)-8

Mature Dimensions: 20-40' tall, with a 15-30' spread

Habit: Weeping, with many branches extending to the ground

Bark: Gray brown, with prominent lenticels

Buds: Conical, 1-1 ½" long, with wide overlapping scales. Terminal-present; lateral slightly divergent from stem

Leaves: Simple, alternate, ovate, 1-4" long, 1-2" wide, margins sharply serrated. Dark green coloring ages to yellow-brown in autumn

Flowers: Semi-double, 10-petaled pink flowers appear before leafout (April)

Fruit: Oval to rounded, 1/3" diameter, red, ripen to purplish-black

Pests/Diseases: Borer, Japanese beetle; no serious problems encountered with the specimen at USM Arboretum
