Hardiness: Hardy in the Gorham, ME area; Zone 4 to 8(9)

Mature Dimensions: 40-60' tall, 20-40' wide

Habit: Narrow, open, irregularly shaped crown

Bark: Grayish brown; on mature trunks ranging from scaly to furrowed

Buds: Terminal-absent; lateral-rounded, with overlapping scales; 1/12" long, brown

Leaves: Simple, whorled or opposite, heart-shaped, 6-12" long, 3-8" wide, entire margin. Late to leaf-out, medium green coloring matures to yellowish brown in autumn

Flowers: Perfect, white, 2" by 2", bell-shaped corolla tube is specked with purple, lobes are spreading, with fringed margins. Borne in early-mid June in upright terminal panacles 4-8" long

Fruit: Green thick-walled capsule matures to brown and persists throughout winter; 8-20" long, bearing many fringed seeds

Pests/Diseases: Few minor; leaf spot, powdery mildew
