Joseph Conforti is Professor of American and New England Studies at the University of Southern Maine. (Ph.D., Brown University)

He received his PhD in American Civilization from Brown University. He has been the recipient of grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has also been the recipient of the Richard Beale Davis Prize of the Modern Language Association and the Northeast Popular Culture/American Culture Association's annual best book award.

He is the author of five books on New England, including Imagining New England: Explorations of Regional Identity from the Pilgrims to the Twentieth Century (University of North Carolina Press) and Saints and Strangers: New England in British North America (Johns Hopkins University Press). He also edited and contributed to Creating Portland: History and Place in Northern New England (University Press of New England).
