There is some distinction between non-profit staff and
professional development staff programming, yet organizational
issues are often addressed in both. Each genre of programming
requires the highest level of facilitation. Each includes
the use of similar models. Each provides sequenced activities
that assist participants in understanding the complexities
of group interactions. Each yields new or refreshed understanding
of oneself and one's co-workers.
Many of the ALC's non-profit clients are staffs from
social and human services agencies, nursing and heath
care homes, hospitals and educational facilities. What
sets the staffs/faculty of these organizations apart
from most businesses is the direct application of ALC
programming concepts to both themselves and their clients/patients/students.
In other words, understanding their own group dynamics
leads to a much greater understanding of the actions
and behaviors of their clients/patients/students. In
fact, it is common to have staff participants bring their
clients/students out to the ALC for a separate program
at a later date.

Oftentimes, social service agencies and municipal recreational
programs have a need to provide experiential adventure-based
activities to participants in their own programs. We
employ
experienced facilitators to deliver those activities
with maximum effectiveness.
Non-profit agencies often struggle with communication
issues due to the independent nature of job functions
and the physical separation of offices and employees.
Problems are often recurring because of the difficulty
in "getting everyone on the same page." Many
problems could be easily solved by utilizing the resources
of the individuals-yet are much more challenging if the
group is not aware of resources the individuals possess.
In other words, the forest is made up of some pretty
strong and unique trees. An ALC program helps you to
see the trees through the forest. Participants often
comment that by the end of a 6-hour program, they know
their co-workers better than they had after working with
them for years.

Finally, there are several non-profit agencies that
are engaged in educational programming such as job training
and retraining. Often, participants in these programs
are victims of business and manufacturing closings, and
have a lower level of education. Sometimes, they are
also victims of extremely challenging family backgrounds,
and are beset with overwhelming life challenges and low
self-esteem. The opportunities an ALC program provides
to self-manage their group and self-discover personal
strengths-regardless of shape, size, gender, sexual orientation,
physical limitations, etc.-is often an exceptionally
empowering and life-changing experience for these individuals.
You or your business may want to consider facilitator
training with the ALC either as a separate program or
as a participant in PHE 353, Teacher Training in Experiential
Education, a 3-credit undergraduate course offered by
USM through the College of Educations' Professional
Development Center in conjunction with the ALC.
