Advising at USM
USM believes in providing students with high quality academic advising.
The developmental academic advising process helps students and advisors
to develop a partnership in which both win--students learn more about themselves,
make progress toward their educational and career goals, and establish meaningful
partnerships with individuals to whom they can turn for help vis a vis educational
planning--advisors also learn more about themselves, about the institution,
and have the opportunity to help students clarify and achieve their educational
goals.
As we work toward operationalizing developmental academic advising at
USM, we need to understand and accept avising as a process. Ender, Miller
and Winston (1984) talk about it is "a continuous process with an accumulation
of personal contacts between advisor and student these contacts have
both direction and purpose (p.19)." Each advisor will develop his or her
own advising style and ways in which they maintain contact with his or
her advisees. In order to assist advisors in working with students, we
have prepared a semester timeline that suggests some of the contacts that
advisors may wish to have with their students and also outlines some of
the critical events that may affect a student's academic life.
