Advising: A Partnership for Success
Advising Services is committed to supporting you throughout
the development and achievement of your educational goals.
The foundation of this support is the establishment of an
educational partnership between you and your academic advisor.
People often think of their advisor as the person who helps
them identify appropriate courses for their degree program.
We can definitely do that, but we are also here to guide you
along other paths for your educational development.
Your advising meetings are an important part of the process
which begins with your first appointment and continues well
into your college experience. We will help you develop your
academic plan through the exploration of your life and career
goals, complementing them with your interests and skills.
You and your advisor
will be discussing many things ranging from your previous
experiences to your future aspirations. These different areas
of discussion
include but are not limited to the following:
- Your strengths
- Development of skills
- Your challenge areas
- Career interests and exploration
- Your background
- Course selection & registration
- Your priorities and obligations
- Degree progression
- Your expectations of education - policies and procedures
- Opportunities that will complement your educational goals

Who is my Advisor?
To find out who your advisor is, use DSIS.
Enter your Student ID#, PIN# (the default is your 6-digit
date of birth, MM/DD/YY) and campus, and click "Connect."
Then select "Academic Program." If you've been assigned an
advisor, the name will be listed in the upper right.
How do I get an advisor?
If you have a declared major, your advisor is located in your
academic department. If you
are an undeclared student or were admitted with conditions,
your advisor can be found in Advising
Services on either Portland or Gorham campuses. Once you
declare your major and/or meet the conditions of your admission;
you will be assigned an advisor within your new academic department.
The Advising Services
staff can also help you select and register for courses
if you are a non-matriculated student (have not gained admission
to the University).
How do I change my advisor?
If your advisor is located in Advising Services, all you
need to do is pick up an Advisor Change Form from that
office.
Once it is completed and submitted a new advisor will be
assigned within Advising Services. If your advisor is
not in Advising Services contact your academic department
for the appropriate process.
