What should I discuss when meeting with my Advisor?
 

1.   How you are doing in classes.
2.   Explain how things are going in general with your USM experience.
3.   Your reasons for attending USM.
4.   Other things you have going on outside of academics. (work, sports, involvement, family, etc.)
5.   Your interests and goals.
6.   USM resources for which you are aware.
7.   Current contact information (e-mail, mailing address, phone number).

8.   The advising relationship.

9.   Core curriculum and other requirements.
10.  Your academic goals for the semester and year.

11.  Any questions you might have about your USM catalog.

12.  Any questions you might have regarding your Degree Audit.
13.  Other opportunities that might be helpful in pursuing your area of interest.

14.  Your department’s procedure for advance registration.

15.  Your advisor’s area of expertise.
16.  Developing an exploration plan.
17.  USM resources.   

How do I prepare for the registration meeting?

1.  Review areas of interest.
2.  Explore possible Majors and Minors.
3.  Other courses that would complement your area of interest.
4.  Review courses you are interested in taking and how these courses fit in with your academic goal.
5.  Print out a registration worksheet and prepare a tentative schedule.
6.  Bring your tentative schedule and any questions you may have about your USM catalog and your
     degree audit to your registration meeting.

What will my advisor and I focus on in future meetings?

1.  How things are going with your courses.
2.  Challenges you are facing for which you might need assistance.
3.  Follow up on interests and goals.
4.  Explore your major more fully.
5.  Career opportunities.
