Pre-Registration Guide

As your orientation session approaches, it is important that you come prepared.  We have created a Registration Guide that will walk you through the basic steps in selecting your first semester of classes.  Use the appropriate worksheet and the list of Core curriculum courses, to prepare a list of possible classes for next semester. You will be able to create a Wish List on line of classes you would like to take.

PRE-REGISTRATION GUIDE and WISH LIST

 

STEP 1 – Math Readiness (C ore Area B & D)

 

Have you met the math readiness requirements?

550≥ SAT

ACT Score of 22+

If you answered NO to all, you must take the math placement exam to determine your math readiness. Click here for more information on placement tests.

*Placement test required

  If YES to any, select an appropriate "D" course from the list. Your advisor can assist you in this decision.

Completion of equivalent college level work

STEP 2 - English Competency (Core Area C)

 

SAT/Written score of 550+

ACT Score of 22+

If NO to all SELECT ENG 104C
  If YES to any SELECT ENG 100C

Completion of equivalent college level work

Prior learning credit for English

If YES, speak with an Academic Advisor  

 

 STEP 3 - Admitted into the “GO” Program

 

GO is a quality academic program for growth and academic opportunity at the University of Southern Maine. 

GO's focus is academic success and support for all its participants.

STEP 4 – Entry Year Experience                                 

                                                   

The Entry Year Experience Courses (EYE) are designed to help students in their successful transition to college.

Students can choose from any of the ten EYE course topics listed below.  Each course is an interactive,

collaborative, challenging, and engaging learning environment. Classes are small in size which gives students a

chance to get to know each other through learning activities.

 

NOTE: These courses are only offered to first year students so you will not find them listed in the Course Search option.  Click here to view the schedule offerings of each section.

STEP 5 - Personal Exploration - HRD 110 - Choices, Changes and Careers

 

Open to all students - The focus of this course is on self and career exploration and the critical role of personal decision making in identifying and pursuing fields of interest.  Learn to understand your own decision making process and the factors that influence this process.

STEP 6 – Explore Major Interests

 

If you have any area of interest/major in mind, take a few minutes to review academic requirements for that

particular major.  The Undergraduate University Catalog is available on-line at http://www.usm.maine.edu/catalogs/

 

 

STEP 7 – The Core Curriculum

 

All students (regardless of major) must complete The Core Curriculum

The Core provides you an opportunity to explore interests and majors. 

 

  1. Review the list of Core courses being offered this fall. 

  2. Identify 2-3 courses in each “Area” that interest you.

  3. Transfer the courses that interest you to the Pre-Registration Worksheet

  4. Bring the Pre-Registration Worksheet with you to orientation to assist you in the registration process.

 

 

STEP 8 – Course Descriptions/Pre-requisites/Availability

 

To learn more about individual courses and if you qualify to take them this semester, visit the Course Search feature on MaineStreet.  If you have paid your $100 deposit, you will be able to log into MaineStreet and access the registration feature. 

You will need your User ID and Password to log in.

To get to MaineStreet from the University of Southern Maine's home page

*Select Login to Maine Street*

 

 

 

 

Enter your User ID which will be the name part of your email address before the @ sign.  (ex. firstname.lastname)

Enter your password and Click Sign In

 

 

 

 

 

Click on  to go to the course search feature.

You can also view your Wish List and Class Schedule.

 

 

 

 

You must choose a course subject to search.  You will then get a list of all courses in that subject area being offered.  Make sure Term: Fall Semester and Year: 2008.

You will see a list of all courses being offered in that subject.  Scroll down to the appropriate course.

 

If you click on the light blue hyperlink next to Section, you will be able to view the course description and pre-requisites.  If there is no description listed, you can check the University Catalog or contact the department.

 

Wish List

 

You can create a Wish List for your semester classes.  This feature allows you to collect courses you would like to take and hold the information in one place.  If you find a class section you would like to sign up for, click on the

and follow the instructions.  Do this process for each class and back up class you would like to take.  You can print this list and bring it with you to Orientation.  REMINDER:  Putting classes in your Wish List does not register you for those classes.  You still need to go through the registration process to add your classes.

 

Please print off a copy of your wish list or Pre-Registration worksheet and bring it with you for your Orientation session.

 

By taking the time now to review potential courses, you will be better prepared for your registration session at Orientation.
